    Introduction

The suburb of Nonnburg in Salzburg, Austria was a quiet neighborhood south of Hohensalzburg Fortress,

with little connection to the more famous tourist attractions of the area, such as the birthplace of Mozart and

the setting of The Sound of Music After Tuesda! No"ember #$th, %&, it became the spotlight of all of Austria

That night, the St 'rsula (mergenc! )linic, located on the north side of Mar*t Square in the center of

town, was recei"ing no emergenc! calls or incoming patients, and so on+dut! doctor (rnst erner, intern -aul

Hosch and nurse .osemarie /erg were rela0ing in the staff brea* room, drin*ing coffee and en1o!ing a discussion

about their fa"orite soccer pla!ersThe! heard receptionist Hanna .uplechter2s scream at #3&4 AM .ushing to the lobb! of the clinic, Hosch

saw a large man wearing glasses and an e0pressionless face, co"ered in blood Hosch2s initial reaction was that

an in1ured man had come directl! to the hospital for help, but when he saw .uplechter2s blood+splattered bod!

l!ing on the floor, he instantl! realized what had happened The man was holding a blood! a0e in his right hand

Hosch mo"ed to run bac* to the brea* room and call for help, but before he could full! react, the man

had *noc*ed him o"er and continued to wal* down the hallwa! and into the brea* room Hosch struggled to stand

up and called out the names of his co+wor*ers The ne0t thing he saw was Nurse /erg burst out of the room and

collapse, bleeding profusel! from the headAt this point, Hosch2s memories become unclear It is thought that he then ran out of the hospital and

to a nearb! public phone across the street, to alert the police

After the Salzburg -olice recei"ed the call, Senior -atrol 5fficer /en1amin 6raber and 5fficer Hermann

Maier arri"ed at the hospital at #34$ AM The officers wal*ed into the hospital alongside Hosch, who had been

hiding in the dar*ness ater, both officers would describe what the! saw + the bodies of two women, the floor

slic* with blood + as an unbelie"abl! horrific sight

6raber and Maier left Hosch in the lobb! and ad"anced to the brea* room The! heard "oices In the

room the! witnessed the bod! of 7r erner, his head not quite se"ered from his bod!, and a towering, blood! man, standing still with an a0e in his hand

For some reason, he smiled at the officers After muttering a strange message, he pushed the a0e

against his nec*, se"ering the carotid arter!, and died

85ne, two, three M! mission is complete,8 the man said, according to 5fficer 6raber

serial *iller This enabled him to ma*e his wa! to the little town on the 6erman border

The Salzburg police hold the position that this was a recurrence of his hat was this

mission, and who did he recei"e it from? And wh! didn2t he commit an! murders for the !ear up to this point?>here was he hiding while the police labeled him a 8wanted8 suspect? I del"ed into 6usta" 9ottmann2s life,

see*ing the answers to these three questions

9ottmann was born the eldest of four children in 9aiserin, a North Austrian town close to the )zech

border His father Hans owned a farm, which went out of business when 6usta" was fi"e !ears old After that,

he repaired bic!cles and such for friends and nearb! farmers, but constantl! had trouble seeing e!e+to+e!e withhis hirers and spent most of his time unemplo!ed and soa*ed in alcohol 6usta"2s mother Marlen was considered

understanding him Though not !et e0plained b! modern science, man! mass murderers ha"e the shared e0perience

    childhood !ears

9ottmann was a large bo! with "er! hard+to+read facial e0pressions He had a tendenc! to s*ip school,

and thus his mar*s were far from stellar He began wor*ing at a supermar*et at age si0teen, but onl! lasted

a total of three months after his super"isor told him he didn2t stand a chance For a while after this, hetoo* up a 1ob that his father had left after quarrelling with the emplo!er + chores at a nearb! farm + and

supported the entire famil! on his own It was at this time that he became s*illed with the a0e

/ut 9ottmann2s period of good beha"ior would onl! last a few more months He was soon arrested b! the

police for his first crimes + "o!eurism and theft He escaped a prison sentence, but had attracted the notice

of the local police, and had no choice but to mo"e awa! from his famil! and li"e in 9losterneuburg

He was hired to wor* at a boo*store in his new neighborhood, and momentaril! beha"ed himself during the

period of his emplo!ment Surprisingl!, 9ottmann had a lo"e for boo*s He was especiall! enthralled with

9rone /oo*s2 infamous but popular occult series, 87orn in the 7ar*ness8 He often told his #:+!ear old cowor*erthat he would someda! 8recei"e a mission and be gi"en powers of dar*ness, 1ust li*e 7orn8

    After onl! a two !ear sentence in prison eindler2s 7orn im 7un*len, b! 9rone"erlag

The first "olume of the a0e murderer 9ottmann2s fa"orite series, 7orn in the 7ar*ness (n1o!s a cult status,

with %4 million total copies of the fi"e "olumes sold Still in print in Austria, 6erman! and the Netherlands

    In 5ctober #:::, 9ottmann made a critical mista*e >hen attac*ing a couple at a remote dri"e+in theater,

he failed to notice the presence of the 7oberman in their "ehicle /it deepl! on the thigh, 9ottmann ran bac*

to his car and escaped, but ran into some on+dut! police officers He tried to throw them off b! dri"ing toward

Ma!erling, but it was onl! a matter of time until he would be caught and arrested /ut all the police e"entuall!

found was his "an, abandoned after 9ottmann hitched a ride on the Schneebergbahn 9ottmann sta!ed off the radar

for more than a !ear, before reappearing at the slaughter in the Salzburg hospital

The police are quic* to point out 9ottmann2s incredible good fortune It is indeed difficult to e0plainhow he managed to e"ade the authorities It would be impossible for a man o"er two meters tall and a hundred

*ilograms to use forms of transit such as buses, trains or hitchhi*ing and escape the notice of an!one in the

"icinit! ("en more m!sterious is that despite police all o"er Austria and e"en 6erman! responding to o"er

thirt! thousand similar e!ewitness reports, not one corresponded to the man the! were loo*ing for

    >here did 9ottmann hide? How did he tra"el? And was he reall! smart enough to pull these off on hisown?

I can2t help but get the feeling that 9ottmann was most li*el! wor*ing with an accomplice /ut the

police dismissed this theor! out of hand The! claimed that his crimes were clearl! the wor* of a single man9ottmann *illed his "ictims b! himself + this is undeniable fact Then what about cooperati"es?

The detecti"e in charge of the case laughed and as*ed me, 8So he was bitten b! a dog and finall! chased

down that night, until someone 1ust magicall! came to his aid?8

Indeed, the premise I suggested was 1ust li*e the ending to the fifth "olume of 7orn in the 7ar*ness

A bro*en and defeated 7orn is rescued with the appearance of a m!sterious magician

Now I would li*e to touch upon two e"ents that happened in the same area about a wee* before the *illings

    at St 'rsula Hospital

5ne happened late on the night of No"ember Bth This also happened at St 'rsula (mergenc! )linic + se"en

da!s before the murders Around %3&& AM, a man came into the emergenc! care ward >hen he remo"ed his o"ercoat,he was wearing not a 1ac*et but onl! a white shirt, stained with blood on the arm He was a salesman on his

wa! to Innsbruc*, and the gun he carried for self+protection accidentall! went off in his car and hit him on

the arm The bullet had passed clean through the flesh, and he wanted them to stop the bleeding

The receptionist that da! was Hanna .uplechter, the on+dut! doctorC (rnst erner The nurse, filling in

Nonnberg2s neighborhoods, 6ilmgasse Erd Street resident (ugen Mol*e, a solitar! man in his B&s, was found dead, shot through the temple The bod! was disco"ered b! his local welfare attorne!, pa!ing Mol*e a routine "isit

After an autops!, medical e0aminers concluded that Mol*e shot himself at roughl! #&3&& -M, No"ember th, with

the pistol he owned This opinion, plus the will that was disco"ered in the corner of his boo*shelf and the fact

that he was dealing with serious heart disease, led the police to declare his death a suicide

At the time that these two e"ents occurred, nobod! could ha"e guessed that the! were related in an!

    wa!

ater, when the Salzburg police loo*ed into Mol*e2s famil!, the! unco"ered a surprising past + rather,

that he had no past at all (ugen Mol*e mo"ed to 6ilmgasse, Nonnburg ten !ears ago According to a neighbor,8>hen his wife died, he left the apartment near the o*albahn he had li"ed in for !ears and mo"ed here He used

to be a math teacher8 /ut in the area where he supposedl! used to li"e, no one had an! recollection of a man

named Mol*e, and his named appeared in no records Also, the remaining balance of his ban* account was far too

high for that of a mere retired math teacher Furthermore, after in"estigating his social insurance and

The Salzburg police finall! set their sights on the man who appeared at St 'rsula )linic at %3&& AMthe da! after the murder It had now been two wee*s since )are*2s murder + but the onl! three people who

could possibl! identif! this man had been *illed with an a0e

The police belie"e there is a connection between the )are* murder and the man with the bullet wound

who appeared at the hospital, but the! do not recognize a lin* between this man and 9ottmann The fact that all

three witnesses were murdered was an unfortunate coincidence Their line of reasoning is this3 the man who

*illed )are* was a trained terrorist, and those t!pes of people ne"er ha"e ties to serial *illers 9ottmann

was the t!pe who acted on his desires and impulses, and not the *ind of person who would commit murder at the

request of another and commit suicide afterward, to seal the case + which ma*es sense/ut the! ha"e no answer for 9ottmann2s last words3 85ne, two, three M! mission is complete8

@-icture ith its wa"ering message that shifts between good and e"il, the

7orn series has a fanatical teen readership, but due to its e0treme "iolence and se0ual material, is

derisi"el! called 8the most enticing *ind of pulp literature8 b! critics

M! own personal theor! goes li*e this

The man who chec*ed in to the hospital with the in1ured arm was the man who *illed )are* He hoped

that the hospital staff would not report his presence to the police, but he had a plan in case the! did If

his co"er+up of )are*2s death went well and the police labeled it a suicide, he would not need to use it /ut

because the measures )are* too* to protect his identit! were not solid enough, the police saw through the man2s

handiwor* Now he would ha"e to turn to his other plan That plan in"ol"ed 9ottmann, the a0e murderer

Somehow, he *new 9ottmann, and pla!ed the part of the m!sterious magician He sa"ed 9ottmann on the run,

bitten b! the 7oberman, and *ept him hidden for an entire !ear 9ottmann imagined himself in 7orn2s role, andsta!ed out of sight >hen the man finall! ga"e him his orders, his 8mission,8 he delightedl! too* on the

1ob the murder of the three witnesses That e0plains wh! the intern, Hosch, was not *illed

The portrait I am drawing is of a murderer who finds another *iller, wins his trust, and then controls

him He then uses this other *iller to commit more murders, before finall! forcing the man to remo"e himself

from the earthThe combination of a professional assassin and a serial *iller as the police sa!, it is a most

unli*el! match I m!self might ha"e ignored the possibilit!, in the beginning

So, is there a historical precedent for this situation? There is

The case that shoc*ed all of 6erman! in #::

As m! bright and intelligent readers are no doubt aware, this boo* is m! attempt to re+e0amine those

e"ents in 6erman!, and to shine light on some facets that are still unclear And at the same time, e0pose the

e0istence of another Monster hiding somewhere in Austria, 6erman!, or perhaps an!where in (urope + someone who

most li*el! recei"ed the same education the 6erman Monster did

I will admit it right now The case in 6erman! is still not entirel! out in the open, in the same wa!that the case in Austria remains un*nown

ma!be the! are still ongoing to this da!
