ANOTHER HOME INVASION 3 STC 2014.2015 SEASON

CALEB MARSHALL, ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

Welcome to the Sudbury Theatre Centre’s second production of our Colourful New 2014.2015 Season, Another Home Invasion.

Now that I have had some time to settle in, put fresh paint on the walls of my new house, and met so many wonderful new friends, Sudbury is feeling more and more like home every day. For those of you I have already had the pleasure of meeting, thank you for the warm welcome. For those I haven’t, I look forward to getting to know you all as we continue this journey together.

The performance you are about to see mirrors our lives, both current and future, as it explores the theme of what you may call life’s one true inevitability: aging.

Often, in our own youthful invincibility, we take for granted the ease with which we carry out our daily lives. We take for granted the strength of our memory, our tight skin and robust physique, and even the effortlessness it takes to get out of bed and dress ourselves in the morning. Above all, we take for granted that our loved ones will always be there to care for us, and us for them, and that we’ll be able to maintain our unassisted lifestyles forever. Joan MacLeod’s riveting play reminds us, both in a light-hearted and moving fashion, that the clock is always ticking for us all.

We hope you enjoy the production and encourage you to share your thoughts with us on Facebook and Twitter - please spread the word and help us share the magic of live theatre.

Coming up later this month is my own contribution to our 43rd Season, an original adaptation of Miracle on 34th Street. This holiday classic is as relevant and meaningful as ever. It is the story of triumph of faith over greed, and goodwill over commercialism. We hope you and your family will join us. We promise to keep the theatre nice and toasty.

On behalf of the STC Family, I’d like to thank our many partners and patrons for their support and of course, you, our beloved audience.

I’d also like to congratulate our Playwright-in-residence Matthew Heiti on his recent nomination for a Playwrights Guild of Canada award for his play Mucking in the Drift, which premiered here at STC last season. Bravo!

Now, open your eyes and heart and enjoy Joan MacLeod’s Another Home Invasion.

ABOUT THE PLAYWRIGHT

ABOUT THE PLAY

JOAN MacLEOD

Joan MacLeod’s style has been praised for clarity, humor, emotional honesty and a steadfast moral dedication to the empathies that transform us. Her dramas are profoundly rooted in real-life challenges to the human spirit, but always avoid sermons and transcend political viewpoints. MacLeod is the recipient of two Chalmers Canadian Play Awards and the Governor General’s Award.

MacLeod was born and raised in North Vancouver. She graduated from the University of Victoria in 1978, and in 1981 she started graduate school at UBC in the Department of Creative Writing. In 1984 she met playwright Alan Williams and saw him perform. Between that and hearing an actor from the Playwrights’ Colony performing one of her poems she decided then and there on a life in the theatre.

MacLeod’s plays include Jewel, Toronto, Mississippi, Amigo’s Blue Guitar, and The Hope Slide which all premiered at the Tarragon Theatre in Toronto. Little Sister and The Shape of a Girl have played widely both in Canada and internationally. Her play 2000 premiered at Great Canadian Theatre Company, and Homechild opened at CanStage. In 2009 Another Home Invasion opened at ATP in Calgary and Tarragon—a coproduction between the two theatres.

We, each of us in the civilized western world, live in a space inviolate. “Our home is our castle,” as the saying goes: our shelter from the intrusion of the weather and other “outside influences;” our defence against physical and mental threats, real and imagined, to our private space; vault to our accumulated private property; theatre of our desires and aspirations; arena of our private victories and defeats, no matter how large or small; harbour of our secrets and fears; refuge to our children and family.

Yet the very protection and security our home provides us with also isolates us from our neighbours, our relatives, and the public affairs of our communities – constructs a garrison of anonymity around us and our loved ones in which we can become unknown, unloved – no one that anyone need be concerned nor care about.

We see the recent rise of home invasions in our society as a violation of our most intimate places: the perpetration of heinous crimes upon the aged, the disabled, the helpless, victimizing our citizens precisely where rules of hospitality and generosity should govern our social relations.

All this and more is the subject of Joan MacLeod’s perceptively poignant play, Another Home Invasion, where “another” carries both its meanings: something commonplace; and something of an entirely different kind and nature. Of course this play involves the hapless, substance-abusing, middle-aged petty criminal we expect to find there, but is he the real threat to the home’s occupants? He even shows up for a return visit.

Who, then, are the real perpetrators of the heartless betrayal of the elderly couple who lives here: who is it that’s robbing them of their possessions, their security, their relationship, their family – their home? The answers to these questions are as surprising as they are unsettling.

Can one nice old man with whiskers change the lives of a world-weary mother, her little girl and all of New York City? This holiday classic is as relevant and meaningful as ever; its story of triumph of faith over greed and goodwill over commercialism has enchanted us for over 65 years.
