T oday’s Gospel passage is one of the more confusing ones for many people.

It tells the story of the dishonest steward who writes off pat of his master’s debts, in essence cheating his master of some of the money that was due him. And yet Je-sus commends this dishonest man. What are we to make of this?

First of all, this is not a morality parable. Jesus is not telling us that we should be-come dishonest. Instead, the purpose is to show us that we must think ahead; we must plan for our eternal future, not just for our lives in the here and now.

In the story, the rich master stands for God, who has entrusted much to each of us in the way of talents, financial re-sources, abilities, and more. Like the mas-ter, one day he will ask if we have used wisely what we have been given freely. However, unlike the master in the parable, God wants us to give away generously what we have been given generously. He wants us to give away his gifts to free oth-ers literally and figuratively. So, in com-mending the steward, Jesus is telling us that if we are like him, we will be generous with all we have been given. Then, when we stand at the gates of heaven, there will be many friends who will speak up for us, just as those whose debts were forgiven spoke up for the steward.

Lying at the heart of this parable are two important questions: How am I stewarding

the resources God has given me? What am I doing now with what God has en-trusted to me? Our response is vital, for, as Jesus is telling us so clearly, one day we will all be called to render an account.

1 st Reading Reflection ~ Amos 8:4-7 ~

The dire predictions of Amos may have seemed laughable to the wealthy inhabi-tants of the northern kingdom. The prob-lem was that Israel had exchanged the worship of foreign gods for the worship of sex, wealth, and power, and as a conse-quence, their officialorship had become hollow and blinded them to the plight of the poor. Sound familiar?

Amos reminds us that religion isn’t an in-surance policy against our sins, especially those committed against the poor. The whole of the life of God’s covenant people was supposed to be suffuse with the Spirit of covenant love. This was to include not only their religious practice, but also their moral, political, and economic lives as well. Without a real concern for the weakest among us, the blessing of wealth can be a curse of blindness in regard to our position before God. Before God none can boast of beauty, wealth, fame, or power. Before God we’re all poor.

Did You Know? The Archdiocese is participating in an independent compensation pro-gram for victim-survivors of sexual abuse of minors by priests. The Archdiocese of Los Angeles, along with five other dioceses in California, will be participating in an independent program to offer persons who were victims of abuse as minors by diocesan priests, access to compensation as well as access to counseling services if they choose. Those harmed many years ago and barred from filing lawsuits because of civil statues of limita-tions will be eligible to make claims under the Independent Compensation Program for Victim-Survivors of Sexual Abuse of Minors by Priests. The Archdiocese’s participation in the program is part of a long-standing commit-ment to supporting and compensating victims of abuse, the protection of children and the vulnerable, and the prevention of abuse and misconduct in Catholic parishes, schools, and ministries. Nationally recognized mediators and private compensation program administrators, Kenneth R, Feinberg and Camille S. Biros will administer the program. 2 nd Reading Reflection ~ 1 Timothy 2:1-8 ~

In his fist letter to Timothy, St. Paul gives us a good account of the way in which our relationship with the state ought to be regulated. In Ro-mans 13 he says that all authority has God as its origin and is for our good. So it isn’t surprising that he counsels Timothy that prayers should be offered “for kings and for al in authority.” If those in authority receive the graces we ask for them, public life will allow tranquility, pi-ety, and dignity. These three socie-tal attributes were cherished and sought after by the ancients.

The saints have always expressed these characteristics in their per-sons, and St. Paul suggests that a holy society, one that’s made up of individuals who’ve been receptive to God’s grace, will express the same characteristics. We ought to pray for the grace—and then strive to receive it—which makes our so-ciety a tranquil, pious, dignified community. We owe it to our neighbor to work for the best possi-ble social system

G ospel Reflection ~ Luke 16:1-13 ~

In speaking to his apostles in this week’s Gospel reading, Jesus asks them to reflect gain on the proper relationship between master and servant. It may seem odd that

those who are closest to Jesus should be schooled like servants while those who are wary of Jesus should be taught as sons; but Luke is interested in all those who will follow Jesus without benefit of hving been Jewish insiders. Having been servants of God outside of the covenant of Israel, they’ll be transformed into children of God; the new Israel after Jesus’ work of redemption is done. The good teacher doesn’t require more of his students than they’re able to give and so Jesus schools the servants of God to be good servants and doesn’t demand that they act like children of the household until they’ve received their inheritance. That may well account for the phrase “If you have faith…” The disciples aren’t even ready to exer-cise their faith.

With friends or family, reflect on the following questions:

In today’s Gospel reading, the apostles ask Jesus to increase their faith. What should we do when we feel we don’t have enough faith?

Let’s consider the questions which the presenter asked at the end of the video. Do you really believe that there is nothing you could do to earn or deserve God’s love, but that he loves you just because of who he is? Why or why not?And are you really ready to be a generous receiver? Why or why not?

P rayer: Habakkuk asks God, “Howlong, O LORD? I cry for

help but you do not listen! I cry out to you, ‘Violence!’ but you do not intervene. Why do you let me see ruin; why must I look at misery? Destruction and violence are before me; there is strife, and clamorous discord.” Think about a time in your life when you felt you were crying out to God without receiving any answer or help. How did you feel? How did you react? Did you ever receive an answer, or are you still waiting? How did you feel when you finally did receive an answer?

R esolution: The Lord tellsHa-bakkuk that the vision will not

disappoint and will surely come in the right time. In what situation or area of your life is God calling you to radical faith this week?

y otras no tienen importancia.
