About Our School

School ContextJeparit Primary School is a small rural school that has a current enrolment of 16 students. Our 2015 enrolment was 21 students. Jeparit Primary School is a part of the rural schools cluster which includes Beulah, Rainbow P-12, Hopetoun P-12, Yaapeet and St Josephs. The student numbers at Jeparit Primary School have been decreasing over the last 5 years. The proportion of students with low socio-economic backgrounds is high and increasing. The purpose of our primary school is to provide our students with a sound educational foundation on which to build a lifetime of learning habits and outlooks. The school, established in 1889, aims to provide students with the fundamental values, skills and opportunities that a young person needs if they are to find their way in the 21st Century. The academic, cultural and sporting aspirations of the students are facilitated by a dedicated staff of two teachers and a bursar. Facilities include permanent classrooms, a modern computer for every student, a school hall and a swimming pool.Achievement

The school runs two multi-age classes with each student receiving an education tailored to their needs. Academic results are similar to or above other similar schools. These results can be highly variable with low numbers of students and long-term averages give the best indication of achievement. Our long-term averages are our strongest results.

Teachers assess all students across the full English and Maths curriculum whereas Naplan exams assess only grades 3 and 5 only in parts of the curriculum. Our 2015 Naplan cohorts are one Grade 3 student who did not sit the test and four Grade 5 students, two of whom were at other schools the year before. Rigorous and objective teacher assessment in English and Maths allows not only accurate reporting but also careful planning of programs to meet the needs of every student, regardless of age, background or academic ability.EngagementEngagement, as measured by attendance data, shows Jeparit at state averages. Low student numbers mean attendance rates vary significantly over year levels. Our rates of attendance are around 95% except at Grade 3 and Grade 1. Our Grade 3 cohort was one child with a poor attendance record. Our Grade 1 cohort was two children, one of whom has a poor attendance record and another who went on an extended overseas holiday but otherwise has excellent attendance. Looking more closely at the figures, while we have two or three families with extremely poor attendance, the large majority of students with excellent attendance rates, far above the state average.

The school staff provide a rich and engaging curriculum supplemented by camps, excursions and other extra-curricular activities. In the case of families with poor attendance, the school works with these families and, where necessary, with external agencies to ensure all our students receive the benefits of a good education.

WellbeingStaff and parents report a remarkable improvement in student behaviour over the past several years. In particular, instances of rude or aggressive behaviour requiring children to be removed from class were once daily occurrences. Nobody needed to be removed from class for these reasons in 2015. The number of student suspensions in 2015 dropped to zero.

Our daily whole-school tokens program, the Guys and Girls program, an updated and consistently applied student engagement policy have produced a lasting change in school culture and clearly understood expectations of behaviour. The school ran after-school sporting programs, cooking lessons, fruit breaks and a greatly increased sports program this year to improve students’ health and wellbeing.ProductivityThe school has declining enrolments but in 2015 maintained the staffing profile of a larger school. The school has taken the steps required to reduce staffing but these changes had not taken effect. Until the changes take effect, the school is running a significant deficit. The positive side of the situation is that we had ample staff to provide small class sizes, comprehensive specialist programs, team teaching sessions and individual assistance and extension programs to any student in need.

What is a School Comparison?

The School comparison is a way of comparing school performance that takes into account the different student intake characteristics of each school.

A School comparison takes into account the school’s academic intake, the socio-economic background of students, the number of Aboriginal students, the number of non-English speaking and refugee students, the number of students with a disability, and the size and location of the school.

The School comparison measures show that most schools are doing well and are achieving results that are ‘similar’ to what we would estimate given the background characteristics of their students. Some schools are doing exceptionally well with the students they have, and have ‘higher’ performance. Some schools have ‘lower’ performance after taking into account their students’ characteristics – these schools will receive targeted support to ensure that there is improvement.

What is the meaning of ‘Data not available’?

For some schools, there are too few students to providedata. For other schools, there are no students at somelevels, so school comparisons are not possible. Newlyopened schools have only the latest year of data and noaverages from previous years. The Department alsorecognises the unique circumstances of Specialist, Select Entry, English Language and Community Schools whereschool comparisons are not appropriate.

All funds received  from the Department, or raised by the school, have been expended, or committed to subsequent years, to support the achievement of educational outcomes and other operational needs of the school, consistent with Department policies, School Council approvals and the intent/purposes for which funding was provided or raised.

Financial performance and position commentary

The school is spending significantly more on its credit budget than it receives in funding through the SRP. The credit budget is used to pay for salaries for our teachers and business manager. The overspending is due to an excess in staff. During 2015, two staff were declared in excess and one has since moved on to work in another schools. The school has made the staffing changes needed to bring the budget into balance, however these changes can take months or years to take effect. In the short term, the school can fund its extra spending from its long-term savings in the high-yield investment account. Once the credit budget is back to a sustainable level, the school will need to replenish its long-term savings by running a small surplus over several years in the credit budget.
