2 CochraneSwitzerlandAnnualReport2013
ForewordThe year 2013 was marked by The Cochrane Collaboration’s 20th anniversary, with variousactivities in Cochrane groups, centres, and branches around the world. Although CochraneSwitzerland is younger, we took the opportunity to celebrate the event on several occasions,including the Cochrane Day held on 28 November. This event involved healthcare professionals,stakeholders as well as the public at large, presenting and discussing the rationale for, and theachievementsoftheCochraneCollaboration.
Twenty years of Cochrane also provided an opportunity for reflection on the past.We organisedseminarswiththetheme“Historicalroots,birthandimplementationoftheCochraneCollaboration.Aparadigmof evidence‐basedhealthcare”, in collaborationwith the Institute of history ofmedicineand public health at the University of Lausanne. Speakers included Ulrich Troehler, historian ofmedicineandknowledgeableabout therootsofevidence‐basedmedicine,DavidTovey,Editor‐in‐ChiefoftheCochraneLibrary,andMetinGülmezoglufromtheReproductiveHealthDepartmentattheWHO.
During 2013, the Cochrane Collaboration consulted its global network about the new strategicdirections it should take. This process led to the development of the Strategy to 2020. Wecontributed our perspectives to this process, from a country in which multi‐lingual access toevidenceiscrucialforstrengtheningtheuseofevidenceinhealthcarepracticeandpolicy.Togetherwith Cochrane colleagues abroad, we wrote an article describing the current state of Cochranetranslationprojectsandpossiblewaysforward.ItwaspublishedinPLoSMedicinetocoincidewiththe21stCochraneColloquium,whichwasheldinQuebecCity,Canada.
At the national level,we continued providing trainingworkshops for people new to Cochrane aswell as for people already engaged in conducting or using systematic reviews. Several trainingswere provided in cooperation with the Cochrane centres and branches in France, Germany, orAustria,thusmakingoptimaluseofavailablecapacity.Wealsocontinuedprovidingsummariesofsystematic reviews in French, German and Italian to selected medical education journals inSwitzerland,withtheaimofincreasingaccesstotheinformationandraisingawarenessofavailableevidenceamongSwisshealthcareprofessionals.
Lookingforwardto2014,whileaimingtocontinueourcurrentwork,wewillalsoreviewandadaptCochrane’sStrategy to2020 toourneeds inSwitzerland.Wewilldevelopourownstrategicplan,whichwillstrengthenusinprovidingtrustedevidenceforinformeddecisionmakingwhich,inturn,shouldleadtobetterhealthandhealthcare.
We look forward toengagingwithallourpartners inworking towardsevidence‐informedhealthandhealthcareinSwitzerland.

1. Cochrane Switzerland in 2013 – Achievements and keyactivities
The activities of Cochrane Switzerland are described along the axes of the four mainobjectives of the Cochrane Collaboration’s Strategy to 2020: producing evidence,makingevidence available, advocating for evidence and developing the organisation.We align tothisstrategywhileadjustingittobestfitourneeds.1.1. ProducingevidenceBy July 2013, over 100 systematic reviews published by the Cochrane Collaboration hadinvolved an author based in Switzerland. We aim to expand this pool of authors byproviding training workshops at basic level, thus increasing awareness and interest incarryingoutsystematicreviews.Wealsoprovidemoreadvancedleveltrainingworkshopstostrengthenmethodologicalandstatisticalcapacityofcurrentandnewauthors.In2013,weorganisedcoursesandworkshopsinvariousformats: Anintermediatecourseonsystematicreviewsandmeta‐analysis.
Thisworkshopwasorganised inLausanneover fivedays (twice twoandahalfdays)duringMay/June.Itwasdirectedatresearchersandauthorsofsystematicreviewsandaddressedmethodologicalandstatisticalissuestodeepenparticipants’knowledgeandunderstanding of systematic reviews analysis and meta‐analysis. Eleven participantsattended the first partof theworkshop– addressing themethodological issues – andnine participants also took part in the second half of the workshop – focusing onstatistical methods for meta‐analysis and use of the STATA software. Participantsincluded healthcare professionals, researchers and students from the UniversityHospitalinLausanne,aswellastheHauteécolespécialiséedeSuisseoccidentale‐HES‐SO(UniversityofAppliedSciencesandArtsWesternSwitzerland).
Thecourseevaluationillustratedthatallparticipantsgainednewknowledge;andthatforalmostallparticipantsthisknowledgewasdirectlyapplicabletotheworkplace.

Internationalworkshops
In January, wewere invited to run a first systematic reviewworkshop in Bucharest,Romania,togetherwithourcolleaguesfromtheAustrianCochraneBranch.Thisthree‐day workshop was an initiative of clinical epidemiologists and public healthprofessionals from Romania, and funded by the Romanian Ministry of Health with acompetitivegrant.TheworkshopwasattendedbyRomanianresearchersfromvariousclinicalspecialtiescomingfromacrossthecountry.Itwasauniqueopportunitytolearnabout Cochrane and its review methodology, and to network. The course led to thesuccessfulintegrationofseveralnewauthorsinongoingCochranereviewprojects.
Team members were also active in trainings delivered by other Cochrane entities orpartners active in relevant fields such as evidence‐based healthcare or public health. In2013thisincludedcontributionsto:
The European Master of Sciences in Epidemiology, University of Mainz, Germany(January2013);
A Systematic ReviewWorkshop, German Cochrane Centre, Freiburg i.B., Germany(February2013);and
The European Summer School in Evidence‐based Public Health, University ofLiverpool,UK(June2013).

Aparadigm of evidence‐based healthcare’. Presentationswere given on the history of Cochrane, thedevelopment of evidence‐based healthcare, CochraneSwitzerland, and the collaboration of Cochrane withtheWorldHealthOrganisation.In addition to these workshops, we organised a halfdaysymposiumontheuseofroutinelycollectedhealthdata.TheSymposiumshowcasedhowresearchgroupsfrom the UK, USA, Canada and Switzerland addresstopicalquestions,fromepidemiologytoqualityofcareand patient safety, using routinely collected healthdata. This half‐day provided a unique opportunity tointeract with experts who have opened the ‘treasuretroves’ guarded by hospital administrations, statisticsofficesandothercollectorsofroutinehealthdata.InNovember,we organised a ‘Cochrane day’ to further celebrate the 20th anniversary ofCochrane.Heldat theMuséede laMain inLausanne, the eventwasattendedbyover70healthcare professionals (in the afternoon) and around 60 participants from the generalpublic(intheevening).Inviteesincludedhealthcareprofessionals,researchers,politiciansandpolicymakers,aswellaspeople representingcivil societyorganisationsoperating inthehealthcarefield.Examplesofsystematicreviewsthatchangedhealthcarepracticesweresharedanddebatedbypanellistswithprofessionalandlayaudiences.
