CONTENTS

Dear Colleagues,

The collection and recovery of used tires in Greece, comprising the main objectives of ECOELASTIKA SA, in 2014 exceeded all previous records, reaching 98% and 110% respectively. Our company, today, sets an example for others to follow, in the field of recycling in Greece both in terms of effectiveness and service for all system users.

Furthermore, through continuous efforts to streamline the company’s operations and upgrade our technological infrastructure we have proceeded in 10% reduction of the financial contributions with effect from 01.01.2015. It is worth emphasizing that our system’s financial contributions remain the lowest in the EU.

Another important development in 2014 was the implementation of our Corporate Social Responsibility program with main object the construction of safety flooring from recycled rubber in schools and kindergartens throughout Greece, a project which we aim to continue intensively in the future.

Our goal remains to continue our successful course in the future in response to the difficult challenges arising from the economic and social crisis affecting our country.

2014 was the 10th anniversary of the opening of the ECOELASTIKA SA used tire alternative management corporate system in GREECE. In these 10 years many things have changed regarding the management of end of life tires in our country. Before 2004 used tires were discarded in legal and illegal landfills resulting to thousand tons of tires remaining unexploited, occupying “valuable” space in Sanitary Landfills1 which are normally used for the disposal of municipal waste. Additionally, the tires of vehicles that could not be decomposed remained unchanged for long periods in the landfills creating a number of environmental problems. Today, 10 years later, used tires are collected and recovered by ECOELASTIKA at a percentage higher than 95%. In 2014 the collection rate of withdrawn tires reached 98%, while the rate of utilization, 110%. The energy recovery was further enhanced during the past year at a 64% compared to recycling that was limited to 36%.

ECOELASTIKA in 2014 decided, as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility, to enable actions to make known the specific applications of recycled rubber, such as rubber safety tiles with a view to boost recycling. In the context of this action, ECOELASTIKA entirely funded the construction of safety flooring in nursery schools and kindergartens in disadvantaged areas within the Municipality of Attica specifically selecting schools the courtyards of which posed serious risks to the safety of children playing in them.

We hope that in 2015, as well, despite the difficulties resulting from the ongoing financial crisis, we are going to be able to successfully continue these actions, spreading the recycling of used tires even more and thus contributing to a better quality of life.

Response time to collection requests

The call receiving for the collection of used tires from the collection points is made by telephone or web communication of the collection points to ECOELASTIKA and requests are recorded in the central company’s server. After the receiving of calls, ECOELASTIKA directly forwards requests to its authorized carriers depending on the geographical location of each collection point.

Upon collection of used tires from the contracted collectors, the central server of the system is immediately updated with information such as the time of execution of the order, the collected quantities of waste per collection point and the time between each order and its execution. In this way, it is possible to extract useful statistics that facilitate the work of ECOELASTIKA and contribute to improving its services.

It must be noted here, that, regarding the island country, the target of 3 days is practically impossible because collection and transportation of used tyres from the islands’ collection points to the recovery points on the mainland, is conducted directly with no intermediate, temporary storage. Consequently, the average service time is directly dependent on the availability and frequency of ferry connections from islands to mainland Greece.

It is also evident, that the objective of the 3 days in the regions with the largest population concentration has been accomplished.

The same progress, in relation to the approach of the target of 3 days, is also observed in the geographical regions of Greece.

During 2014, the mechanical processing units received a total of 24,291 tonnes of used tires. In total, tire recycling plants have processed 25,263 tonnes of used tires, i.e. approximately 1,000 tonnes more than the collected amounts, which come from previous years stockpiles. Total sales of end products and by-products in Greece and abroad amounted to 25,368 tonnes.

d) Mass balance of ELT mechanical processing units

Development oftiresstockpiles

During the first years of its operation, ECOELASTIKA created certain high stocks of used tires in different parts of the Greek territory, mainly in recycling plants. These aggregated quantities of unprocessed, used tires posed a potential environmental risk for the areas and their inhabitants.

This fact was the reason for ECOELASTIKA to put a high priority on the reduction of stockpiles of used tires which should now be disposed to utilization at as much higher rates as possible. This was fortunately made possible progressively, from 2010 until today, thanks to the more efficient operation of treatment plants as well as due to the change in the subsidy policy of ECOELASTIKA, which now favored recycling units that were selling larger quantities of processed finished products from recycled tires.

In late 2014 the stored quantities of whole and shredded tires did not exceed 30,000 tons. We hope that over the next two years these quantities will be almost completely absorbed by the recycled tire products market in Greece and abroad.

Research&Development

ResearchProgramsIn 2013, ECOELASTIKA in cooperation with the companies Motion Hellas and Retire submitted a proposal for the design, development and installation of an integrated system for the collection, transportation, treatment and optimal recovery of materials from used tires.

In February 2014 the proposal was approved and implementation of the program began. Its duration shall be 15 months with completion time within 2015.

The technologies incorporated in the GreenWTMS Integrated System, are designed to gain new knowledge for developing new and improving existing products, processes and services in the management of used tires of vehicles, declassify them as “waste” and classify them as “useful products’’ as referred to in the Directive on waste in the chapter “end of waste”.

Specifically, they are intended to:

• fully control, in terms of quantity and quality, the distribution and processing of used tires in Greece so that it is carried out as far as possible technically, environmentally and economically in the most comprehensive way,

• design an irreproachable system for recording and management of the collection and transportation of used tires,

• optimize the mechanical processing of used vehicle tires,

• maximize the level of recovery of recyclables,

• improve the quality of products and by-products from end-use of tires (crumb, tire powder, TDF, etc.)

• document, in order to declassify all products and by-products of used tires processing as waste and classify them as products,

• comparatively analyze crumb rubber exploitation technologies,

• assess the environmental impacts and the environmental footprint,

• analyze the proposed solution, according to sustainability criteria based on the methodology of Life Cycle Analysis (LCA)

YEARS

ECOELASTIKA

20042014

ECOELASTIKA celebrated 10 years of operation by organizing an event in the “Athinais” showroom in December 2014. All partners of the company, both in the sector of tire and vehicle importers and the sector of recyclers, collectors and transporters, were invited to the event.

The purpose of the event was mainly anniversary apart from informative on the work of ECOELASTIKA during our 10 years of operation.

The attendants enjoyed the opportunity to follow a presentation

of the company’s activities within the decade 2004-

2014. During the presentations was given information

on the evolution of the management of used tires

in Greece in accordance with the principle of

extended producer responsibility, a model under

which ECOELASTIKA currently operates as well

as other alternative management systems

in the country. Statistics were presented, on

the recovery of end of life tires in Greece and

comparisons were made with actions from

similar European companies operating under

the same European legal status. Following,

were presented actions planned by the company

for the coming years of operation, aimed at both

the spread of recycling and improving existing

structures and procedures applied by the company

today.

YEARS 10 YEARS WITH ECOELASTIKA

It is commonly accepted that for the environmentally appropriate and efficient use of end

of life tires expansion of the markets for the products of the recycling of scrap tires is

imperative. Particularly important is the continuation of the excellent cooperation between

ECOELASTIKA and the Government ( E.O.AN., competent Ministries, Municipalities of

the country, Waste Management Bodies, environmental organizations, etc.), on a

common goal for protecting the environment and boosting recycling.

The goodwill attitude of citizens and the implementation of recycling in everyday

life raise the bar for its continuous improvement and development.

It is certain that recycling in Greece today might be a separate pillar of development

both to strengthen markets by providing new economic and ecological recyclable

materials that can be absorbed by the production, and to utilize new renewable

alternative energies in energy intensive Industries. This development will create

thousands of new jobs and promote the circular economy and sustainable

development.

Reduction of the tires stockpiles Ecoelastika’s objective in 2015 is to further reduce the tire stockpiles by 7,000 tons. This will be achieved by implementation of the terms of cooperation agreements signed by ECOELASTIKA with the holders of the largest tire stockpiles.

Additionally, following a decision of the Board of ECOELASTIKA, the gate fee, upon delivery of used tires to recovery units, is abolished, while a corresponding increase in the amount of subsidy on the sale of finished products of recycled tires is established. This will decisively contribute to fully address the whole tire accumulation issue in their processing plants. This change will take effect on 01.01.2015.

Objectives For 2015

Market developmentsBoth the Greek and the European market of used tires treatment products for recycling remained relatively stable in 2014. Similarly, the quantities of various grain-size crumb rubber produced by all the EU Members in which respective alternative management systems are operating, are increasing.

This trend leads, as a natural result, firstly to a price reduction on these main products from recycling of used tires of vehicles throughout Europe and secondly to a stagnation and gradual decline in recycling rates compared to the ones of energy recovery.

On the other hand, the energy recovery of TDF (shredded rubber used as an alternative fuel) is enhanced because of an increasing international demand for alternative fuel mainly by cement industries affected by the crisis in recent years due to a declining construction activity resulting to their main concern being economical use of energy.

Given the above conditions, ECOELASTIKA aims to stimulate the absorption of the end products resulting from the recycling of used tires by the Greek market, by expanding specific applications in our country. Actions undertaken by ECOELASTIKA within the framework of Corporate Social Responsibility and Environmental Policy, are towards this direction.

26

Contacts-ActivitiesECOELASTIKA, within the framework of Corporate Social Responsibility and Environmental Policy, aims to draw the attention of the public and all competent bodies to ecological issues and their spreading especially the recycling of tires. One of the key instruments to achieve its goal is social media (Facebook, etc) of which is expected to acquire at least 5.000 followers. For the year 2015 (similarly to 2014) actions have been planned aimed at increasing the rate of recycling against energy recovery. Specifically, ECOELASTIKA intends to continue with faster pace actions including construction of safety rubber flooring on courtyards of schools (kindergartens, primary schools), especially where there is a great need to protect children from injury in case of fall. Along with these, we will continue our educational work in kindergartens and schools, where in a pleasant manner and modern interactive training methods, children learn about the necessity of tire recycling as well as ecology, in general. Additionally, ECOELASTIKA, by entering into contracts with Municipalities will carry on actions of countryside cleaning, in an effort to stop uncontrolled dumping of scrap tires with a scope to a better environment while aiming to collect waste tires at source.
