AnnualReport
Fiscal Year 2013
With your help, last year The Children’s Village impacted the lives ofmore than 11,000 at-risk children and their families, from New York Cityto the Hudson Valley and on special projects as far away as Iraq andthe Netherlands.
The caliber of our work over the past 12 months has again earned usa place as a semi-finalist in the New York Nonprofit ExcellenceAwards. I am especially gratified by these ongoing recognitions by ourpeers in light of the dramatic changes in child welfare and juvenilejustice and, indeed, in the shifts happening in our own philosophyand work.
As we have done for over 162 years, we continue to provide highquality residential care to teens experiencing acute behavioral andmental health crises. But, we did not stop there. Much of our work thispast year focused on bringing pre-emptive care to at-risk children andtheir families in their home environment--so that fewer and fewer chil-dren ever need to step foot on our campus or in our shelters. With thischange, we have seen better outcomes for children, greater reinvest-ment of dollars in the communities that need it most, and, of course, alower financial cost to society.
There are no shortcuts, no easy answers. The work is difficult, but therewards can be life-changing. Thank you for helping us keep childrensafe and families together.
I hope this annual report on our activities will help you see the preciousvalue of your support in returning children and families to a firmer foot-ing in life. Thank you, again. I am deeply grateful to you.
Jeremy C. Kohomban, Ph.D.President and CEO

“There Are Better Boys Out There”
Last year, CV had the highest score among New York City agencies forfinding children permanent homes. We are proud of that accomplish-ment, but unfortunately, not every case works out. When that happens, itis heartbreaking for everyone. Our therapists use all the tools they can tohelp children deal with disappointment, including our therapy dogs. Thefollowing is an account of how a therapist broke the news to 9-year-oldJason that his adoption might not work out.
“As I broke the news to Jason, Ruthie(therapy dog) snuggled and nurturedhim. We sat amongst my pile of stuffedanimals and pillows until, with Ruthie byhis side, he drifted off to sleep. He stirreda bit as he slept--whimpering, checkingto ensure I was still there, etc.”
This wasn't the first time Jason felt rejec-tion. First his mom left him, then his aunt, then a foster family, and now thepossibility of a real family slipped away. Jason rarely gets his hopes up. Infact, the first time he met the couple who wanted to adopt him, he said,"You might want to keep looking. There are better boys out there.”
We are working hard to find a loving family for Jason and feel confidentthat he will soon have someone to call Mom and/or Dad. In the mean-time, he spends a lot of time cuddling with Ruthie.

Our Family
Living His Dream
At this year’s golf and tennis outing,we had the immense pleasure of in-cluding one of our alumni, LloydJones. Aside from being a great tennisplayer (which he learned at CV), Lloydis a true success story.
Lloyd has a degree in horticultural sci-ence from SUNY Cobleskill and is work-ing as a horticulturist for New York City.At 24, Lloyd is living his dream of work-ing with plants and nature and looksforward to starting graduate school.
When teens leave us, we work hard to stay connected to them. It is trulyspecial to be able to share the successes they have achieved.
Social Impact
CV operates 28 separate programs in more than a dozen locations. Forevery one of them, we work hard to track and measure the impact wehave had on the people we serve. Following are some of the outcomeswe achieved in 2013.
Teens Avoid Foster Care – Saving $13.26million!When teens are at risk of harm to them-selves or others and removing them fromtheir homes seems the only solution, westep in. Our Preventive Program helps fam-ilies get their children on track before seri-ous trouble starts.
Last year, 94% of teens in this program, all of whom were at risk of removal, remained at home and not one in our Manhattan Program was removedduring the six months after the program. This success came from engagingthe entire family in learning and practicing skills to support each other.
Savings calculation: Residential program cost = $130,000/year. Prevention program =$8,000/year. Assumption: 75% (a conservative estimate) of the 136 families servedwould have a youth removed without the program (102 youth). 102 x $130,000 = $13.26million. This does not include future savings by avoiding incarceration, food assistance, public health care, and other social services.
Homeless Teens BecomeIndependent—Saving $489,000+Homelessness can take a decadeto overcome, and the emotionaldistress and shame can be debili-tating. CV’s Supported Housingprogram provides homeless teensnot just a place to live, but alsothe life skills and emotional supportneeded to live independently fora lifetime.
Last year, 21 of the 25 teens inCV’s program, all of whom came to us from the streets, left to independ-ent housing. They left with a job, money in a savings account, a supportnetwork, and some are working toward a college degree.
Savings calculation: Average lifetime cost of homelessness = $69,000. Cost of program =$21,000. Assumption: at least half of the 21 teens would have sunk into periodic home-lessness. $48,000 x 10.5 teens = $489,000 in shelter costs plus savings in social servicesover a lifetime.
4
Children Find Permanent Families – Saving $1.15 million!Adoptions mean family, and family means having people who will loveyou through mistakes and setbacks. Too often, children enter foster careand languish there year after year with their connections to family slippingaway.
Last year, CV met 100% of its adoptiongoal, with 36 adoptions. In addition,CV had the highest rating in New YorkCity for finding permanent families forchildren either through adoption or re-unification with families.
Savings calculation: One year of foster care =$32,000. Finding 36 children permanent familiessaved $1,152,000 in just one year. Many chil-dren who enter foster care stay several years.
More Outcomes: 87% of foster youth in our Bridges to Health Program remained
at home
87% of youth on probation in our Harlem Justice Programavoided re-arrest
96% of youth in our Preventive Program remained at home
99% of youth in our Rockland homeless shelter went to a stablehome
100% of youth in our Westchester Sanctuary shelter went to astable home
88% of older youth living on their own in our WAY Homeaftercare program were in stable housing
75% of youth in our WAY Home aftercare program graduatedhigh school or are still in school with passing grades
100% of seniors in our Work Force Investment program gottheir high school diploma, and 93% who were out of schoolgot a GED or work credential
