A Message from the Dean & Rector

Forthisyear’sreport,Iamhappytosaythatourworkhasbeenoverwhelminglyupinourcongregationandourcommunity.Previousannualreportsandtheyearstheyrepresenthavebeendominatedbyeventsthathaverequiredmuchcongregationalattention:in2010,itwastheearthquakeinHaitiandthesearchforanewOrganist-Choirmaster,in2009theonsetoftheGreatRecessionandthediscernmentaboutthefutureofourchoirsafterFredBurgomaster’sretirement,andin2008,thetransitionassociatedwithmyarrivalasdean.2011,bycontrast,allowedformuchgreaterfocusonourcoreministryandmission.WhileworkinHaiticontinued,asdidadjustingourbudgetforthelowestyearofendowmentincome,anddespitesomestafftransition,thesetasksdidnotdistractfromworkonevangelism,ourliturgicallife,musicalexcellenceandoutreachintoourcommunity.Atthebeginningoftheyear,atitsannualretreat,theVestrymadeevangelismitstoppriorityfortheyear’swork.TheVestryapprovedavisionstatementforEvangelism:“WestrivetobeChrist’slivingpresenceinthiswork,sharingourexperienceofHislovewitheveryoneweencounter,seeingChrist’slivingpresenceinthem.”Thisemphasisandvisionmotivatedmuchofourworkthisyear.Overallstaffgoalswereestablished,withconcreteobjectivesputinplacetoachievethem.Theseresultedin,amongotherthings:theMagneticChurchconferenceheldattheCathedral;thelaunchingofanewseriesofclassesheldoffsiteonMassachusettsAvenue;andtheformationofataskforcethatreportedtotheVestrythismonth,recommendingspecificactionstoimproveourinvitation,welcomeandinclusionofnewcomerstoChristChurchCathedral.Thisworkwillcontinueinthecomingyear.DanaMarshsettledinproductivelyandlaunchedanimpressiveseriesofeventsandconcertsinadditiontomusicalofferingsinourliturgies.ApartiallistincludesaconcertbytheKing’sSingers,aseriesoffineLenten

concerts,avisitfromtheAmericanBoychoir,concertsfeaturing,Bach’sSt.JohnPassion,theMozartRequiem,Handel’sMessiah,aswellassingingtheFauréRequiemforAllSouls’,andAdventLessonsandCarolsbothattheCathedralandintroducingittotheChristianTheologicalSeminary.ThechoirsrosefundsforatourtotheNationalCathedralwithanauctionattheColumbiaClub,whichhadtobecancelledwhentheNationalCathedralwasclosedduetoearthquakeandhurricane.OurboysandgirlshaveshownremarkablepatienceastheywaitfortheirfundstobeusedandthetriprescheduledthiscomingJune.WeenjoyedmuchclassicalmusicfromtheHispanictraditionwithbothatributetoTomasLuisdeVictoriaandacolonialChristmaswithcarolsfromtheNewWorld.DanawasalsoabletoreachoutintothecommunityanddirectedafestivalchoirfromsevenareahighschoolsatthePalladium,inaperformanceoftheFauréRequiem.Itwasatrulyremarkableyearforusmusically.Ifmusicmakingisoneofourpassions,theotherisoutreachintothecommunity.BetweenCathedralWomen,MissionoutreachandHaitirelief,wegave$1,406,780awayin2011,alloutlinedlaterinthisreport.FredAndrews,assistedoftenbyAndyMcConnell,helped813peoplewhocametoourdoorsinneedonTuesdaymornings.WeestablishedanewpartnershipwithSecondHelpings,givingthemagrantandalsohelpingplantanherbgarden.WecontinuetobeinvolvedwithDayspringshelterforfamilies,tendingtheirgardens,whileourmiddleschoolstudentsgatherdonationsthismonth.ThroughdirectedgivingparishionersgavedesignatedgiftstowardourHumanNeedsministryaswellascontinuingoursupportfortheInterfaithHungerInitiative.Andmanypeoplewereactivegiving,servingandreachingouttoneedyfamiliesatthebeginningofschoolwiththe

backpacksandatChristmaswiththeAdopt-A-Familyprogram.Asachurchforourcity,wewereactivewelcomingthehomelessonSundaysandthroughouttheweek.Wewelcomedthehomeless,communityleadersandtheMayoronDec.21fortheannualmemorialserviceforhomelesspersonswhodiedoverthepastyear.We,forthefirsttime,participatedintheinterfaithThanksgivingserviceattheCathedralofSts.PeterandPaul,benefitingtheInterfaithHungerInitiative.OurHispanicmembersputupaDíadeLosMuertosaltarattheIndianapolisArtsCenterinBroadRipple.FathersandFamiliesResourceCenterheldtheirgraduationceremoniesagainattheCathedral,fivetwelve-stepgroupsmeetweeklyhere,withasixthSpanish-languagegroupbeingplanned.WewereapartoftheannualFiestaLatina.Andofcourse,ourStrawberryFestivalwasagainahallmarkoftheyear.OurreachextendedinternationallyinourcontinuedengagementwiththeDioceseofCentralEcuador.Becauseofinternalconflictthere,wedidn’tsendamissionteamthisyear,butremainedsupportiveasthePresidingBishopreachedaresolutiontotheconflictthere.Weimmediatelyreachedouttohelpafterthisreconciliation.Missiontripstherearebeingplannedforthecomingyear.InSudan,wecompletetheworkbuildingattheMarkNicholsschool.InBrazilwecontinuedtosupporttheCASA+aidshostel.AndfinallyinHaiti,wewelcomedBishopZacheDuracinandpresentedhimwithourgifttowardthereconstructionofHolyTrinityCathedral.WeestablishedapartnershipbetweenourDioceseandSte.AndreinMithon.SeveralgroupsmadetripstoHaiti.OurgenerosityencouragedothermajorgiftstowardHaiti,includingagiftfromtheDiocesematchingourown$500,000commitment.AsaCathedralforourDiocese,wealsowelcomedaneverlargerdiocesanconfirmationservice,allclergyfortheMaundyThursdayrenewalofordinationvowsandneighboringparishesofSt.Alban’sandSt.Philip’sforTwelfthNight.Evenaswelearnedtobetterwelcomenewcomers,madegloriousmusicandservedothers,wealsotendedthehealthofourowncommunity.Welearned,withmanyopportunities,togrowspiritually.MySundayforumcontinuestoattractgoodandactivegroups.InthefallwelearnedaboutImmigrationissuesfromoneofourownactivistyoungpersonsandhowwemightrespondfaithfully.TheCatechumenatecontinuesto

attractnewpersonsintoourcongregation,torenewedfaith,andsometobaptism.ThisfallwestartedanEducationforMinistrygroup,with10peoplecommittingtofouryearsofintensivestudyandreflection.Moregroupsareplanned.DuringLent,professorPaulVallieretaughtusabouttheJesusPrayerandtheWayofthePilgrim.Finally,wealongwithSeabury-WesternTheologicalSeminary,weengagedwithcutting-edgescholarswhopresentedtheirretrievalofearlyChristianthemesintheSavingParadiseweekend.Wealsosetasidetimejusttoenjoybeingtogether.Wehadtwopicnicsonthecircletobeginandendoursummerschedule,withgames,Mariachi,tentsandmuchfun.WecelebratedtheDayoftheDead,crossculturally.Onealtarwasthe“BritishAltar,”perhapsthefirsteveranywhere!Theauctionraisingmoneyforourchoirtripwasafungatheringforall.Therewerevariousreceptionsandmealstogether,afterAdventLessonsandCarols,aftertheChristmasPageant,andforMotheringSunday.Thirty-fivepersonsgatheredforlunchandtheGreeningoftheChurch.Itisimportanttonotetransitionsinleadership.CanonReesOlanderretiredinJuneafter15yearsandtoomanyaccomplishmentstomention.TomCraigwashiredsoonafterherretirementandhasmadeagreatstartinoverseeingourresources—financial,capitalandhuman.TheRev.WhitneyRicewenttohernewparishinBeanBlossom,andournewCurate,TheRev.AndyShamel,beganthissummer.SimonThomasJacobsjoinedusasourFellowinSacredMusic.Finally,wegivethanksfortheleadershipshownbymembersofthiscongregationintheVestry.JenniferSegnerhasservedasourclerkforthreeyears,keepingourofficialrecordofVestryproceedings.DebJones,BobGoyetteandAndyMcConnellendtheirtermsasVestryMembers.TheircommitmentandpassionforChristChurchCathedralhasbeenveryevident.Andy,inparticular,hasservedasbothJuniorandSeniorWarden.Hebroughtfreshinsightandwisdombeyondhisyearstous.IamthankfultohaveservedwiththemthispastyearandlookforwardtoanotheryearinservicetoChristattheCathedral.Theeventsdescribedinthisreportareonlyaportionofthelifethatisoursinthisplace.MayGodblessourlifeandministrytogetherintheyearahead.

NuestrocompromisointernacionalcontinúoconlaDiócesisdeEcuadorCentral.Debidoalosconflictosinternos,noenviamosunequipodemisiónesteaño,perosemantuvoelapoyo;elObispoPresidenteayudoallegaraunaresolucióndelconflicto.Viajesdelamisiónseestánplaneandoparaelpróximoaño.EnSudán,secompletaeltrabajodeconstrucciónenlaescueladeMarkNichols.EnBrasilsesiguióprestandoapoyoalaCASA+ayudaalberguejuvenil.Y,finalmente,enHaití,ledimoslabienvenidaalobispoZacheDuracinylepresentamosunregaloparalareconstruccióndelaCatedraldelaSantísimaTrinidad.HemosestablecidounaasociaciónentrelaDiócesisySaint.AndreenMithon.VariosgruposrealizaronviajesaHaití.NuestragenerosidadparaHaití,conunregalode500.000dólares.

A Message from the Senior Warden

IthasbeenmygreathonortoserveChristChurchCathedralaspartoftheVestryforthelastthreeyearsandasyourSeniorWardenforthispastyear.Theexperiencehasbeenveryrewardingandhasmademethinkandpraydeeplyaboutthenatureofourmissionandwhatitmeanstomepersonally.

FormethemostpersistentreminderofourcallingtoseekandserveChristinallpersonsistheweeklyHumanNeedsministryatChristChurch.EveryTuesdaymorningFredAndrews,oursexton,openstheCathedraldoortotwentyorsopeoplewhoneedhelpwiththeirutilitybillsorrent.Thoughthehelpweoffermaynotseemlikemuch,ontheTuesdayswhenIvolunteerIalwaysgetthankedorblessedorhugged–sometimesallthree!–bypeoplewhoaregenuinelygrateful.Ihave

One of my favorite passages from the Bible is Psalm 51. In just 20 verses it makes the transition from cries for mercy to shouts of praise and from gnawing doubt to soaring joy. Verse 16 especially is a well-loved line in prayer, "Open my lips, O Lord, / and my mouth shall proclaim your praise." This verse recalls many of the experi-ences we shared in our Cathedral parish this year.

We proclaimed our praise to God for the successful conclusion to our search for a new Director of Music. Our tireless search commit-tee worked, talked, listened, and prayed through an exhaustive process of examining the important role that music and song play in our worship.

After many months of work our search committee helped us call Dr. Dana Marsh to minister with us through music and song. Quite literally, opening our lips is his job now!

At the same time we started to hear a different kind of song coming from the ruins of earthquake-stricken Haiti. Even in the midst of destruction and disorder, the Haitian people are singing. We heard them on our first mission in March to provide disaster mental health care to traumatized neighborhoods. They are singing for "Strength for the Journey", which was the name of a series of four pastoral care conferences organized by CREDO and Christ Church Cathedral to minister to Haitian priests and church leaders. They are singing even though the huge organ of Holy Trinity Cathedral in Port-au-Prince was smashed by collapsing debris. They are still singing and we have been invited to join, to sing with them as we rebuild.

Not all words of praise are spoken so loudly but they are still heard. Every Tuesday morning the door of the St. Francis foyer opened to a dozen or so people who need a little help paying their bills. Stephen Ministers at Christ Church grew to 23 strong, providing around 18 hours of personal care every week to members of our community.

The Adopt-a-Family ministry had another very busy year, not only buying Christmas gifts for families that would not have otherwise had any, but also filling over 100 backpacks with school supplies just in time for the new academic year. Many lives were touched one at a time and every smile and "thank you" is a little blessing.

These are just a few of the songs of praise and thanksgiving that echo through our lives. New songs and old, raised by many voices or just one, we lift them up to God.

Iamsogratefultohavehadthisopportunitytoserveourcongregation.TherearemorepeopletothankthanIcouldpossiblynamebutIamalwaysmostthankfulfortheloveandsupportofmywife,Meghan.ThankstoStephenCarlsenforkeepingmemotivated,toDonnaWorthandAnitaFarnsleyforkeepingmeorganized(asmuchasthat’spossible),andtothemanypeoplewhohavegraciouslyofferedmeyourprayersandencouragement.

Weareblessedwithgifted,devoted,anddedicatedleaders,bothclergyandlaity.MyprayersandbestwishesforthemandforournewVestryinthecomingyear.

WehaveseenJesus’handsworkingattheStrawberryFestivalandatWaycrossandthenpassingonthefruitsoftheirlaborstosomanyothers.ThewonderfullygiftedhandsthatplaytheorgansanddirectourchoirsinjoyfulpraiseareHishands.WereceivetheEucharistatthealtarasfromJesus’ownhandsthroughthoseofpriestsandchalicebearers.WefeelHishandsinlovingblessingatbaptism,confirmation,whenweareill,andwhenwecometoourearthlyend.

OurstooarethefeetwithwhichJesusgoesaboutdoinggoodintheworld.ManyfeetfromChristChurchCathedralhavewalkedandworkedalongsidethoseindireneedinHaiti,andwemadeagreatmonetarygiftforrebuildingthechurchandschooltherethisyear.Wepraythatotherfeettoomaycontinuethisworkthatwehavestarted.

OurmanyStephenMinisterswalkinlovingsupportalongsidethosetheycareforontheirdifficultjourneys.ThefeetofSt.Theresa’sGuildmemberstakeremembrancesfromtheparishtothosewhocannolongercometochurch.OurLayEucharisticVisitorswalkfromthealtartotakethegiftoftheEucharisttothosewhoarehomebound.Thefeetofouracolytes,ushers,AltarGuildmembers,lectorsandvergersleadusintogreaterunioninourliturgies.EverydayeachofuswalksinJesus’footstepsandwehopetocreateapaththatothersmaywanttofollow.

OursaretheeyesthroughwhichwelookoutChrist’scompassiontotheworld.WeseethedivineinourdailyliturgiesandweseethebeautyofGodthroughourinspiringmusic.WesharethisviewwiththecitythroughthenewSacredArtsprogramofwonderfulconcertsbyourownchoirs,musiciansandsuperbgroupsoutsidetheparish.WeseethosewhopassbytheCathedralontheCircleeverydayandourbannersandsignsinvitethemtocomeintoseeGodthroughoureyesjustasourclergyhelpustoseeGod’slovemoreclearly.

Lastyearatthistime,wefeltassuredthatwewerebeginningtoemergefromthefinancialstresscausedbythe2008stockmarketdeclineandwepredictedasteadyriseinourendowmentincome.Youwillrecallthatinearly2009,wereducedourbudgettoreflectapredictedlossofendowmentincomeforsubsequentyears.A“ReserveforKnownDeficits”wassetasidetoprovideforsteadyprogramminginthoseyears,2011,2012and2013,whenthereductioninendowmentrevenuewouldmostimpactourbudget.Wefullyexpectedthatafterthistime,ourendowmentrevenuewouldbebackto“normal”levels.

Thisfall,aswereviewedthebudgetfor2011andcrafteditfor2012,wecametotherealizationthata“newnormal”wasverylikelyemerging,oneinwhichwehavenoassurancethatendowmentincomewillgrowatasteadypace.Instead,theFinanceCommitteepredictsthatintheforeseeablefuture,wewillcontinuetoseedramaticupsanddownsinthemarketwhichwillrequirecarefulattentiontohowwefundprogramsandtheoperationsoftheCathedral.ThesefinancialcircumstanceswillalsorequirethatwelookforwaystoincreaseParishGivingforprograms.

The2012budget,recommendedtotheVestryandpassedatitsDecembermeeting,projectstotalexpenditurelevelsof$3,568,399withadeficitof$200,000.Itwillalsorequirecontinuedcarefulmanagementbyclergyandstaffwhohavesuccessfullymanagedresourcesduringthesedifficulttimes.ByspreadingtheReserveforKnownDeficitsoverathreeyearperiod,($200,000foreachofthenextthreeyears),theCathedralwillhavetimeforathoroughreviewofourprogramsandoperations.ItwillalsogiveustimetoexamineParishGivinganddiscusshowtobetterinvolveourparishionersinfundingtheinitiativeswhicharemostimportanttous.

Sinceconfidentialityisthecruxofourministry,muchofwhatStephenMinistersdoisbehindthescenes.In2011,over20StephenMinisterswereactiveintheCathedralcommunity,withsomeofuscaringformultiplecarereceivers.Wehelptocreatealoving,caringChristiancommunitythatwelcomesallthroughourdoorswithChrist-centeredcare.

HethenintroducedtheclergyandstaffoftheCathedralandappointedDonnaWorthasclerkforthemeetingandMarilynSchultzasheadteller.Hecalledforamotiontoapprovetheminutesofthe2010AnnualParishMeetingasshownintheAnnualReport.(Ihavenoideawhomadethemotiontoapproveandwhoseconded).Themotionpassedbyvoicevote.
