R E PO R T O P T HE S CHO O L BOARD.
In submitt ing this, our annual school report of the
progress made in our schools during the past year,it gives
uS pleasure to be ab le to say that good work has been
accomplished .

improvement of our schools has been the exchange of our
long used t ext-books for a new supply that seems to be
well suited to our wants . We do believe that our text
books, with the except ion of our arithmet ics, W il l compare
favorably with those of surrounding towns .
With two except ion s, experienced teachers have been
employed . Where sat isfact ion was given in the S pring term
the same teachers were re-engaged for the fall t erm , if pos
sible, as we think when a t eacher has learned the disposi
t ion and capacit ies of pupils that better result s are
obtained .
Experienced and well q ualified teachers are not pleased
with the small schools and small salary offered them , for
they can d o better elsewhere ; conseq uently we are obliged
to hire the inexperienced .
We maintained s ix schools last spring and Seven last
fall . We have given each pupil twenty-eight weeks of
schooling, except ing Bow Mills school, which had only
twenty seven, on account of the parents not being willing
to board the teacher .
Owing to the small number of pupils in the Bog dist rictlast spring it was thought advisable to have them carried
to the Wood Hill school, making that larger and more
interest ing,and save the expense of another school .
Our school regist ers Show too many tardy and absent
marks . I f all the parent s felt a more l ively interest in
the educat ion of their children, and would insist upon hav
26
pupils at the Bog the school board formed a union of thetwo schools for this t erm only .
For the remainder of the year the school was under the
charge of M iss Emma A . Root of Goffstown . This was
Miss Root’
s first experience in teaching, and her success
was very commendable . The closing examinat ion would
have done credit to a much more experienced teacher .
R IV E R ROAD .
This school was taught for the ent ire year by Nell ie J .
Bloomfield of this town, with her usual success . T he win.
t er t erm was somewhat interrupted by sickness, but never
th e less it has been a very profi table year.
WH ITE .
This schoo l has been under the instruction of Mrs . I da
L . Dow of this town, a wide awake, energetic t eacher, well
adapted to the wants of a school, both as to instruct ion
and discipline. The examinat ion Showed that her school
had been trained to the habits of study .
SOUTH B OW .
Willie F . Davis had charge of this school, and ful ly sus
tained his former reputat ion as a successful t eacher . This
has been his third year of service in this dist rict , which
has been sat isfactory to both parent s and scholars .
B O G .
Only one term of school has been maintained in this
dist rict during the past year, owing to the small number of
pupils, who were carried to another school for the Spring
term .
The fall t erm has been under the care of Edwin A .
Colby, who has taught so many years in town that it
seems unnecessary to men t ion his merit as a teacher .
