The session was organized by Tom Creswell, Mysore Sudarshana, Padma Sudarshana, and Frank Martin. This session was aimed to explore the needs driving research into new detection technologies and how new tools are validated and gain acceptance and widespread use. The symposium was co-sponsored by Diagnostics, Diseases of Ornamental Plants, Emerging Diseases and Pathogens. The symposium consisted of six topics including, Driving new detection techniques: What are the needs? (Cheryl Blomquist), Field deployable diagnostics: Are we there yet? (Frank Martin), Driving new detection technology: from research to validation to widespread acceptance (Mark Nakhla), RPA and related isothermal technologies (Timothy Miles), Detection of fungal pathogens in turf: a LAMP lights the way (Francesca Peduto Hand), and panel discussion. Unfortunately due to limited time in the program, the session was not accepted for the 2016 annual meeting. Objectives Some members of the Plant Pathogen and Disease Detection Committee are concerned about the existence of several committees with same subject matter such as Diagnostic Committee, Plant Pathogen and Disease Detection Committee and Emerging Diseases and Pathogens Committee. Members would like to find out if there is a way to consolidate them. Membership in these committees overlap and similar topics are discussed at the committee meetings. Outcomes The committee is cosponsoring three special sessions in collaboration with the Diagnostics committee special session entitled “Best Practices in Diagnostic Test Development and Deployment”, Emerging Diseases and Pathogens committee special session entitled "Invaders not welcome: Meeting the challenge of invasive exotic plant pathogen incursions" and the Diseases of Ornamental Plants committee special session entitled “Managing ornamental diseases in funky places”. During the committee meeting, the members

Recent Activities In 2015, the Plant Pathogen and Disease Detection Committee submitted a

proposal for a special session titled, “Emerging pathogen detection

technologies: translating science into practice”. The session was organized by

Tom Creswell, Mysore Sudarshana, Padma Sudarshana, and Frank Martin.

This session was aimed to explore the needs driving research into new

detection technologies and how new tools are validated and gain acceptance

and widespread use. The symposium was co-sponsored by Diagnostics,

Diseases of Ornamental Plants, Emerging Diseases and Pathogens. The

symposium consisted of six topics including, Driving new detection techniques:

What are the needs? (Cheryl Blomquist), Field deployable diagnostics: Are we

there yet? (Frank Martin), Driving new detection technology: from research to

validation to widespread acceptance (Mark Nakhla), RPA and related

isothermal technologies (Timothy Miles), Detection of fungal pathogens in turf:

a LAMP lights the way (Francesca Peduto Hand), and panel discussion.

Unfortunately due to limited time in the program, the session was not accepted

for the 2016 annual meeting.

Objectives Some members of the Plant Pathogen and Disease Detection Committee are

concerned about the existence of several committees with same subject matter

such as Diagnostic Committee, Plant Pathogen and Disease Detection

Committee and Emerging Diseases and Pathogens Committee. Members

would like to find out if there is a way to consolidate them. Membership in these

committees overlap and similar topics are discussed at the committee

meetings.

Outcomes The committee is cosponsoring three special sessions in collaboration with the

Diagnostics committee special session entitled “Best Practices in Diagnostic

Test Development and Deployment”, Emerging Diseases and Pathogens

committee special session entitled "Invaders not welcome: Meeting the

challenge of invasive exotic plant pathogen incursions" and the Diseases of

Ornamental Plants committee special session entitled “Managing ornamental

diseases in funky places”. During the committee meeting, the members

proposed that there is a need for training in next generation sequencing and

the USDA Beltsville Laboratory Staff has agreed to organize the training in

near future. The committee will propose a symposium for 2018 on the

validation of pathogen detection and diagnostic methods and harmonization.

Dr. Laurene Levy will lead the symposium.
