Public Health Nursing Clinical Conference November 2017
The Massachusetts Association of Public Health Nurses (MAPHN) - Western MA Chapter and the Western MA Nursing Collaborative joined forces in the Inagural Public Health Nursing Clinical Conference, designed to increase knowledge of the public health nurse’s interactions with community, municipalities, state agencies, and healthcare providers. The conference provided student and working nurses with direct exposure to various job tasks of the public health nurse through immersion in a four-hour patient surveillance and
disease control simulation. Guest speaker Colleen T. Labelle from Boston Medical Center addressed the group on the impact of the opioid epidemic on public health. The participants were informed of strategic interventions and given resources to assist community members who are battling opioid addiction. Student nurses earned clinical hours, registered nurses earned continued education credits as a result of their participation in this full-
day event.
Reaching the Triple Aim: Innovations for Interprofessional Models of Care February 2018 The Healthcare Workforce Partnership of Western Mass set its focus on “Reaching the Triple Aim: Innovations for Interprofessional Models of Care”. Led by the Pioneer Valley Interprofessional Education Collaborative (PV-IPEC), participants from the local health centers, other healthcare facilities and educational institutions engaged in a discussion on improving patient experience and health outcomes through implementing team-based care. Special guests Margaret Flinter, FNP, Senior Vice President and Clinical Director of Community Health, Inc. and Melissa Kline, RN, MSN, Education Coordinator at Mercy Medical Center shared best practice examples from within their respective organizations. The group used the models implemented at the two featured facilities to examine effective collaboration and improve outcomes for individuals and families. The academic programs responded to the discussion with strategies on preparing students to think, communicate and work in collaborative practice teams.
Inter-institutional, Interprofessional Student Poverty Simulation April 2018
The Pioneer Valley Interprofessional Education Collaborative (PV-IPEC) hosted its first inter-institutional, interprofessional student poverty simulation in April. The Poverty Simulation exposed participants to the multitudinal factors leading to and complex realities of individuals living in poverty. The simulated one month experience into the life of a low-income family reinforced how the social determinants of health directly relates to health outcomes for members in the community. Eighty students from Bay Path University’s-Physician Assistant,
Elms College’s-Nursing, Western New England University’s-School of Pharmacy and Health Sciences, and Westfield State University’s-Nursing and Social Work programs were active participants in the simulation.
