    DEAR FRIENDS,

We are pleased to present the Vidant Health Foundation annual report for 2018, a year marked by great successes throughout the organization. We are seeing firsthand how your gifts are transforming lives and giving new hope to families, neighbors and friends. Together, we are helping to bring better health to thousands of people and making our communities and region an even better place to live and work. In the pages that follow, you will learn more about what made 2018 such a spectacular year – from a $10 million gift from the Eddie and Jo Allison Smith Family Foundation to celebrating 20 years of Community Benefit Grants and everything in between. We are grateful for you, our partners, for choosing to support Vidant Health and working together to improve the health and well-being of eastern North Carolina every day.

    VIDANT CANCER CARE

2018 marked the opening of Vidant Cancer Care at the Eddie and Jo Allison Smith Tower on the Vidant Medical Center campus in Greenville. This six-story, 418,000-square-foot facility is home to both inpatient and outpatient services, allowing patients to receive all of their care in one convenient place.

Together, with generous gifts from the Golden LEAF Foundation and the Eddie and Jo Allison Smith Family Foundation along with thousands of other donors, we are inspired by a commitment to provide unsurpassed care close to home, prevent cancer whenever possible and diagnose the disease in the earliest stages.

  • Five years ago, the health care experience for children across eastern North Carolina was forever changed with the opening of James and Connie Maynard Children’s Hospital at Vidant Medical Center. The 78,000-square-foot addition has provided dedicated space to meet the medical needs of the smallest patients and their families.

The hospital has accomplished many milestones during this time. Here are a few of the highlights:

    • In 2016, a dedicated children’s hospital transport team was established to provide transport services for more than 1,500 sick infants and children throughout eastern North Carolina.

    • The Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) program began in 2015 and has provided breathing and heart support for more than 20 pediatric patients with severe cardiac and pulmonary problems.

    • The pediatric sedation program has been recognized as a model of excellence in design and technology by The Society of Pediatric Sedation.

Together, we are helping thousands of children in eastern North Carolina each year.

    COMMUNITY BENEFIT GRANTS PROGRAM

In 2018, Vidant Health celebrated 20 successful years of the Community Benefit Grants Program which was created in 1998 as a joint partnership between the health system and the Vidant Health Foundation to address the health and wellness of Pitt County residents. As the health system grew, the grants program expanded to include the regional hospital service areas, as well. The overall goal of the program is to help people before they reach the point of being hospitalized for health conditions that could otherwise have been avoided.

Together, all of these funded programs have improved the health and quality of life for countless residents of eastern North Carolina.

CELEBRATING 10 YEARS OF INPATIENT HOSPICE

Since the opening of the Service League of Greenville eight-bed hospice house in 2008, the goal has been to provide care and compassion at the end of life. The dedicated multidisciplinary team consists of physicians, registered nurses, care partners, social workers, chaplains, bereavement counselors and volunteers.

During the past 10 years, the inpatient hospice team has been honored to care for eastern North Carolina, providing a “home away from home” for 4,600 patients and their loved ones when pain or other distressing symptoms become too difficult to manage.

The Service League of Greenville celebrated 10 years of service to the community with a successful rededication by health system and local officials. It was truly an honor to see the many families, community partners, volunteers and leaders come together who have been impacted by the great work at this beautiful facility.

    $30.4 MILLIONhas been

    distributed to 1,670 GRANTS

    Since 1998, more than:

  • The fiscal year ending September 30, 2018, set a high level for success at the Vidant Health Foundation. Generous gifts and grant awards in excess of $30 million were received during the year, addressing many critical health care needs. A substantial amount of these gifts and grant awards were in response to the continuing need for cancer care across eastern North Carolina.

The Foundation held $26 million in investments at the end of the fiscal year. The investment portfolio returned 6.85 percent for the fiscal year, with a three-year average of 9.04 percent. Investment earnings, net of related investment fees, were $1.5 million for the fiscal year.

We are overwhelmed by the generous support of our community. Together, we are working to provide direct impact to families, friends and neighbors across our state.
