'93s

At the time of the Annual M eeting a year ago a new wing of the

Hospital came into occupation. It contained accommodation for tw enty

beds, thus bringing the Bridgman to the level of a sixty-bed hospital. In

addition to a large ward it contained a well-equipped nursery, bath-rooms,

storeroom and sewing-room. T his additional accommodation has added

greatly to the successful working of the Hospital. Im mediately after

occupancy in M ay the additional accommodation was required. Several

times during the past year the Hospital, including this new wing, has been

full to capacity. As reported a year ago the new wing w ith equipment

cost in round figures £5,000. It gives peculiar satisfaction to the Board,

and especially to Mrs. Bridgman and Mrs. Sargeant who wrought so hard

at the task of ’collecting, to report that this substantial addition to the

Hospital w ith its equipment is all paid for.

T h e number of patients treated during the year shows still fu rther

advance on the figures of 1937, which at the tim e were reported as almost

“ startling.” In 1938 the total number of out-patients was 10,810, an

increase of 1,265 or 13 .25% . T h e in-patients numbered 2,255, an

i ncrease of 15 3 or 7 .2% .

D uring the year under review the fees collected amounted to £2,938

(in-patients £1,588, out-patients £ 1 ,3 5 0 ), an increase of £416 or 16.4*%

T w o remarks may be offered on these figures: ( 1) T h e percentage ol

in-patients’ fees collected to fees charged rose from 47 .2 % to 6 6 .9 "% ,

Page 7: ANNUAL REPORT - University of the Witwatersrand · Mr. J. Montague Pim (Hon. Treasurer). Dr. James Black. Prof. Dr. Gordon Grant. Prof. Dr. J. M. Watt. ... Hon. Consulting Gynaecologist

and ( 2) T he increase in the total of fees actually paid is the more notable

because during the year, the fee for the confinement period of ten days

was reduced from £3 to £2. M any Africans have expressed thanks to the

Hospital for the relief which this reduction has brought to many humble

homes.

I t may be noted that more and more women are coming to the

Hospital for pre-natal care, one of many signs that the African’s fear of

entering any hospital is being steadily overcome.

A nother notable fact is the way in which the Saturday morning clinic

for “ Bridgman babies ” has continued its popularity throughout the year.

M others are encouraged to bring in their babies every week for a year, to

be weighed and have their progress noted. T h is service is given free of

charge. Something is thus being done to combat the high in fan t m ortality

found in African families, especially when living in town conditions.

W hat was said in the last report regarding the convenience of the

out-patient building for the expeditious handling of cases has been em

phasised anew in 1938. T h e peak number of out-patients was reached in

November of last year when 1,042 cases were treated. T he excellent

arrangement of the building was one factor contributing to the efficient

handling of such large numbers.

Throughout the year under review Dr. Stephen-Lewis continued to

relieve D r. Carlisle on Mondays and on alternate Sundays, a service much

appreciated. W hile Dr. Carlisle was overseas on short leave, Dr. Altschul

kindly acted as M edical Superintendent. T o these and to Miss K. Goulden

as dispenser and Miss Rogers in charge of the office, the Board give their

warm thanks.

A ttention is invited to the figures submitted by the H on. Treasurer.

Grants-in-Aid have increased by £635, and subscriptions and donations

show an increase of £138 1 Is. 8d. T o all who have supported the w ort

of the Hospital bv their donations the Board express their gratitude and

thanks.

H is W orship the M ayor of Johannesburg, accompanied by the Lady

Mayoress, paid an official visit to the Hospital at Christmas time, and thus

afforded fresh evidence of the personal as well as official interest they have

in the Hospital.

Religious services conducted in one of the large wards, were held

rcgularlv for the benefit of the staff and patients. Various ministers,

European and African, have conducted these services. T h e services for

out-patients, conducted on Wednesday mornings by the Rev. H enry

Nawa, the Hospital Chaplain, has been largely attended. O n Saturday

evenings, the Bible class for the African staff conducted by Mrs. Bridgman,

Mrs. Ritchie and Mrs. M ortim er, has been welcomed and appreciated.

T h e Board express anew their appreciation of the services of the

H onorarv Professional Staff. These are:—

Thanks are expressed also to the H on. Treasurer, M r. J . M ontague

o f their professional services in the management of the accounts of the

Hospital, and to Messrs. Aiken & Carter, the H on. Auditors.

In November, 1 938, the Rev. D r. J . D exter Taylor, accompanied by

Mrs. Taylor, left South Africa to attend the M adras Conference organised

by the International Missionary Council, and thereafter proceeded to

America fo r a year’s well-earned furlough. T h e Board takes this opppor-

tunity to express its warm thanks to D r. Taylor for the innumerable services

he has rendered to the Hospital. H e has been the H on. Secretary of the

Hospital since its inception in 1 928, and has given invaluable help. In

any difficult problem that arose, his counsel and good judgm ent have been

relied upon w ith confidence. In the collecting of funds, and in all

deputations to the Governm ent, his persuasiveness, enthusiasm, untiring

labour and complete forgetfulness of self have commended every cause

he advocated. 1 he Board wish him and Mrs. lav lo r a happy and useful

furlough and look forward to their return.

F o r t h e Y e a r e n d e d 3 1 s t D e c e m b e r , 1938.

For 1937 we seemed to have the motto, “ Go forward,” and during the year ended 31st December, 1938, the same motto seems to have been ours.

T h e returns for 1938 show an increase of 153 in the In-Patient D epartm ent on those for 1937, and in the O ut-Patient D epartm ent we have realized a return of over 10,000 as anticipated in my Report for 1937. T he increase in O ut-Patient returns numbered 1,265.

D uring the year, 9 pupil midwives sat for the South African M edical Council’s Examinations in M idw ifery, and 8 succeeded in obtaining their Certificates.

Once again we wish to thank the H onorary Consultant Staff for their unfailing and ready assistance in emergency during the past rear, and my sincere thanks are due to M atron and her European Nursing Staff for their able assistance and co-operation on every occasion. If it were not fo r their kindly help my task m ight prove a heavy and difficult one, but our sharing of responsibilities makes the work a joy.

D r. Stephen-Lewis still acted as my relief, and to her I wish to record my sincere thanks for so doing. W hilst I was overseas, D r. Altschul willingly and ably carried out the duties of M edical Superintendent, being liked both^ by the Nursing Staff and patients.

Miss Rogers and Miss Goulden still carry out their duties nobly and well. W ith the increase in patients their tasks are heavier, but the joy that things are progressing is shared by us all.

W ith the extensions completed during the year the hospital now has accommodation for 60 beds and the expenditure necessary to complete the Building and Equipm ent since the last Balance Sheet dated 31st December, 1937, has amounted to £1,429, made up as follows:—

T h e New W ard, including Equipm ent, has cost us in total the sum of £5,106, only £106 more than the original estimate, and to pay for this, donations amounting to £4,408 have been received. T he difference between these figures is approximately equal to the reduction in our cash position at the end of 1938 as compared w ith 1937.

In spite of the reduced charge to In-Patients, which came into force in April, 1938, the figures are still further increased as follows:—
