The Governing body and the Headteacher share responsibility for the strategic management of the school, acting within the framework set by the national legislation and by policies of the Local Authority (LA).

While the LA is the employer of staff, The Governing Body and Headteacher have separate and particular responsibilities for the selection and management of staff. The internal management of the school is the responsibility of the Headteacher.

The full Governing Body meets once every half term. In addition, sub- committees meet regularly to discuss specific issues. They report to the full Governing Body for formal ratification of proposals.

Dear Parents and Guardians,

Whenever I sit down to write an Annual Report to Parents, such as this one, I have to recall the past year in the school. That is harder than you think as at Gwenfô we always look forwards. However, there are a few landmarks that are worthy of note on both counts.

Firstly, the governors were able to appoint Miss Starke as our substantive Headteacher, after two years as acting Headteacher. Her appointment gives both the school, and Miss Starke, the stability needed to progress plans and see the schools continued development in the coming months and years. The only downside from the appointment was that the governors then had to start another selection process for a new Deputy Headteacher, Miss Starke’s previous post in the school. Although strictly in the current year, you are probably aware that the position was filled by Mr Sam Bean.

Another significant event last year was the expansion of the number of children allowed into the school, going from 27 to 30. That meant an extra 21 places across the school. Although this sounds as though we would have many empty seats, most of the places were filled almost immediately. It just goes to show how popular our school is.

It should also be noted that, with the developments at each end of the village, there is a significant shift towards the school’s future intake being almost entirely from the catchments area. We are aware this may present some oddities and difficulties for some over the coming years as we work through this period of transition.

Recalling another event from last year, one that didn’t develop as it should have, was the final part of our current building programme. I told you last year that we were hoping to start in the New Year (2018) with extending the old Year1 classroom. Unfortunately, due to contractor difficulties, that had to be put on hold. Thankfully, the process is due to start again in 2019, and with fingers crossed, work starting before Easter.

I must also mention our children, they never cease to amaze me at the way they support one another, and the school (we used a panel of from the School Council during the Deputy Headteacher selection process). They are a constant source of pride in the way they conduct themselves both inside and outside the school. I must make a special comment about an assembly I attended, when the children sang so well that both staff and parents attending had tears in their eyes. As a total non-singer I can only hope they continue their great singing for the rest of their lives.

At Gwenfo C/W Primary School leaders have children’s safety, welfare and learning at the forefront of all decision-making. Each member of staff and each governor is a leader of at least one aspect of the school’s life, working as a strong team to improve and raise standards. Pupil voice, through the School Council and pupil voice groups, and parent consultation through regular meetings and surveys, mean that the whole school community is part of the consultation and decision making process.

The Headteacher and the Senior Leadership Team works with all aspects of the school community to identify priorities, plan and action developments for these and to closely monitor impact and outcomes. The Governing Body monitors school improvement through regular meetings; it also spends time on scrutiny of documentation and ensures that a rigorous appraisal procedure of the Headteacher and staff adhere to. In all, the ‘Team’ ethos at Gwenfo C/W Primary School is key to the successful learning of all our children.

v Following Estyn recommendations there has been a focus on cross curricular application of numerical skills.

v We have focussed on writing techniques for extended writing and used Pie Corbett storytelling and Mrs Briscombe our HLTA and published author has worked with classes in Key Stage 2 to develop their creative writing.

After focussing on problem solving in a cross curricular context we were thrilled to see a positive impact in the National Reasoning tests taken by pupils from Y2-Y6.

We have worked with Vicar Jon to review our teaching of Religion across the school. We have incorporated visits both to St. Mary’s and other significant places of worship to ensure that our pupils have a knowledge of Christianity as well as other World Faiths.

Thispastyearhasmarkedanumberofcelebrationsforusasaschool.OurrecentlyopenedNurseryhasgonefromstrengthtostrengthandisnowalmostfullwhichisaremarkableachievementinayear.Ms.ShalomandtheNurseryteamhaveworkedhardtoimpactuponthelearningofouryoungestchildren.Wecontinue toworkwith theLocalAuthority toupgrade theclassroomprovision inYearOne.Theoutsidespaceremainsanareathatwewill,overtime,returnbacktobeingavibrantlearningspace.However,we are thrilled that despite improving the size of the schoolwe still retainmuch of ourbeautifulgrounds.

AsaLeadCreativeSchoolwewereable tousegrantsreceived toworkwitha localwillowartist toenhancepupil’smathematicalskillsofshapeandmeasure.Thechildrencreatedmodelsofbuildingswithinthevillageinpreparationforbuildingalargewillowstructureinthegrounds.ThechildrenchosetomakeareplicaofourChurchStMary's.Nextyearwearethrilledtohavebeenawardedacovetedthirdyeargranttocollaboratewithalocalschoolandsharesomeofourexperiences.

Wehavelovedexploringthevillageandourcommunityandhaveenjoyedusingourlocalareafully,fromtripstothepond,walkswiththewildlifegroup,visitstoVicarJonatSt.Mary’sandsingingtolocalresidents.AtGwenfôwewanttobearealpartoftheschoolcommunityandwillcontinuethisfocusnextyeardevelopingourschoolgrounds,spendingmoretimeexploringourwonderfulvillageandofcourseworkingwithasmanylocalresidentsandvolunteersaswecan.Pleasedopopintoschoolifyou’dliketobeinvolvedinthelifeoftheschool.

The curriculum is delivered to all pupils; pupils are grouped into 7 single age classes of mixed ability and gender with a 48 place nursery (24 morning places and 24 afternoon places)

All pupils follow the National Curriculum; teachers use a variety of teaching methods and strategies to meet the individual needs of our pupils, all lessons are differentiated to at least three levels. Literacy and Numeracy is taught in line with the Literacy and Numeracy Framework, R.E, Welsh and Science are all core subjects. We continue to refine and embed a cross curricular approach to develop the Foundation subjects: History, Geography, Art, Music, DT and IT.

We use the Cornerstones scheme to plan and deliver our cross curricular topics, the scheme have four distinct stages:

1. Engage, this introduces and stimulus to inspire and engage pupils interest. 2. Develop, this stage develops the pupil skills to research and gather information. 3. Refine, this stage practises and refines pupil skills. 4. Express, pupils present their learning, knowledge and skills to a wider audience.

The scheme is designed to be comprehensive, engaging, interactive and fun.

The school follows the syllabus of the Church in Wales for Religious Education and Collective Worship. The scheme is also linked to Personal and Social education and Emotional Wellbeing. We are well supported by our vicar, Rev Jon Ormrod who advises staff and leads a weekly worship and celebrates the Eucharist each term at school.

Some of our pupils are identified as having additional learning needs. Pupils are identified by class teachers / parents following the end of year assessments, pupils making little or below average progress in literacy and or numeracy skills are placed on our Additional Learning Needs Register.

The register includes pupils at three different stages in the Code of Practice:

1. School Action 2. School Action plus 3. Statement

In 2017- 2018 Twelve pupils are at School Action Seven pupils are at School Action plus One pupil has a Statement of Additional Learning Needs.

Pupils are supported initially through a differentiated curriculum within the classroom. The pupils are supported by an appropriately trained Learning Support Assistant in the classroom individually or in small groups at School Action.

Learning Support Assistants (LSAs) provides specific interventions to pupils at School Action plus outside the classroom under the direction of the ALNco and external agencies.

Pupils with a statement are supported by external agencies and specialist teachers.

Our school enjoys very positive links with the community: the local church St. Mary’s plays a large part in the life of the school, Vicar Jon Ormrod leads weekly worship and celebrates Eucharist each term, parent, grandparents and local parishioners join the school community in the school hall.

The pupils also took part in the Christmas celebrations at the Vale Village church, based in Wenvoe.

The school supports the local Food Bank, with Harvest Festival, Advent and Lent offerings being offered to the Food Bank. The staff and school community continue to support the Food Bank during the year.

School takes part in annual Remembrance and Christmas celebrations in the Village. We enjoy strong links with the Village Playgroup and the local High Schools.

Members of the local community volunteer in school, working with the pupils on reading, sports and environmental tasks.

The local Community Support Officer, Owain Grandin, is a regular visitor to the school and assists with community issues. PC Emma Mudie delivers worskshop sessions for all pupils focussing on all elements of citizenship.

Many of the local businesses, Wenvoe Arms, Walston Castle, Pugh’s Garden Centre, Asda and Tesco support our fundraising events.

The school actively encourage community participation in school events through open days and social school events.

Pupils learn Welsh throughout the school, each class has a daily ten minute session to practise incidental Welsh alongside their weekly lessons to develop vocabulary, and sentence patterns through topics. The teachers are supported by Mrs. Deb Durham, Athrawes Fro termly.

Welsh is used often within the school day with a daily 10 minute focussed session on language patterns as well as a weekly lesson. A pupil voice group (Criw Cymraeg) is dedicated to using Welsh around the School and encouraging others to use Welsh in day to day life.

The Welsh culture is embraced throughout the year in all areas of the curriculum; many of our educational visits are to local historical landmarks to encourage the children in their knowledge and understanding of the local area. St. David’s Day is celebrated in great style with inter-house competition, Welsh recitation, dance, music and poetry writing. Each year a Bard is selected and takes the Chair.

We are very proud of the achievements of our pupils moving on to High Schools. We are encouraged by the feedback we receive from various schools the pupils move into. Without exception the schools tell us that the children are well prepared both academically and socially for the next stage of their education.

NETBALL

Mrs Pat Plevey and Ms Victoria Plevey coached the A and B team after school netball. The team played a number of friendly games with local schools. The team took part in the local netball league with games at Cadoxton Sports Centre. Gwenfo hosted our annual memorial cup tournament in May. A group of netballers were also able to participate in a Kent tournament which was reciprocated at Gwenfo in June. Huge thanks to Mrs Plevey and Ms Plevey for all their hard work organising this trip and to all those who supported the netballers to raise all of the funds needed to pay for this trip

Thanks to Mrs Plevey and Ms Plevey for their time and commitment to the school. In order to manage weekly training in bad weather the school utilises the Sports Barn at St. Richard Gwyn High School.

FOOTBALL The pupils in Years 5 and 6 enjoyed coaching in the Summer term led by Mr Thomas and Mr Atkins.

SWIMMING

Pupils in Y4 took part in a two week learn to swim programme at Western Leisure Centre Pool. All pupils completed the course and were able to swim at the end of the period. Many pupils swim very well and attend classes and clubs outside school.

ADVENTURE SPORTS

Pupils fromY5 enjoyed the adventure activities provided at Tregoyd House during their residential visit. Many thanks to staff who accompanied these trips.

The plans for the coming year include:

An extension to the busy bee room to enable it to be used as a classroom, work will also take place to turn the existing Year 2 classroom into a community/resource room. It is anticipated that this work will commence during the Easter break in 2019. Groundworks to re-establish a Reception class outdoor area are also planned along with the PFTA who are fundraising to replace and re-site the timber trail that is used by all members of the school.

We have 4 sets of toilet facilities for pupils:

• 3 Nursery toilets

• 2 Reception class toilets, one for girls and one for boys

• 2 separate bathrooms for boys and girls in Foundation Phase

• 2 more bathrooms for Key Stage 2 pupils

All toilets have been refurbished within the last six years.

All toilets are cleaned once a day; the reception toilets are cleaned twice a day.

There are toilets for male and female members of staff, which are cleaned daily.

The male staff toilet also caters for wheelchair users with a changing table.

Naturally we hope there are no reasons for complaint, but also realise at times things can happen that give rise to concerns.

However, should you have need to complain about the school in any way please contact either the Chair of Governors, or Headteacher, in writing at the address shown at the front of this report.

Your right to request a meeting with the school’s governing body. The Schools Standards and Organisation (Wales) Act 2013 (The Act) removed the requirement for school governing bodies to hold an annual meeting with parents. Instead, new arrangements were introduced to enable parents to request up to 3 meetings in any school year with a governing body, on matters which are of concern to them.

If parents wish to use their rights under the Act to hold a meeting, 4 conditions will need to be satisfied:

1. Parents will need to raise a petition in support of holding a meeting.

The parents of at least 10% of the school’s registered pupils [190 registered pupils will need to sign the petition. If it is a paper petition, then a written signature must be given as well as the name and class of each child who is a registered pupil at the school. If the petition is in electronic format, the ‘signature’ required is the typed name of the parent plus the name and class of each child who is a registered pupil at the school and the email address of each parent who ‘signs’ the electronic petition.

There were 190 children registered as pupils with this school at the beginning of this academic year. Exact roll numbers at any time during the year may be obtained from the school office.

2. The meeting must be called to discuss matters which affect the school.

The meeting cannot be called to discuss such matters as the progress of individual pupils, or to make a complaint against a member of the school’s staff or governing body.

The petition should contain brief details of the matter(s) to be discussed, and the reasons for calling the meeting. This information should be clearly displayed at the top of the petition, with parents’ signatures appearing below.

3. A maximum of 3 meetings can be held during the school year.

The law allows parents to use their rights to request up to 3 meetings with a school governing body during the school year.

4. There must be at least 25 school days left in the school year.

The law makes it a condition that at least 25 school days are left in the school year when the petition is received so that the meeting can be held.

A “school day” means a day when the school is open to pupils: it does not include weekends, public holidays, school holidays or INSET days.
