Annual Report Fiscal Year 2013

THe arc carrOll cOUNTY | FY13 aNNUal rePOrT2

Dear Friends of The Arc,

As another year comes to a close, we pause to reflect on the successes and challenges. We are grateful for our staff, who demonstrate each day what it means to be a caring and dedicated professional in our industry. We are honored to be selected by people with disabilities and their families to be the organization that provides their services and supports. We are fortunate to live in a community that supports our efforts and gives generously of their time, talent and treasures.

During the past year, the board and staff reflected on the above mission and vision statement and determined that The Arc needed to take some bold steps if we are going to continue to fulfill our mission and vision. One of our challenges was how do we fulfill our mission and vision with a facility that was constructed for another purpose? The need to renovate The Arc facility quickly emerged as the highest priority. Our current facility was built in the mid 1980’s with the purpose of providing state-of-the art workshop and warehousing services.

Through the years, our industry and focus has changed to reflect our vision of being a leading agency that helps cultivate relationships in the community. This is evidenced by the many people who are currently employed by local businesses.

A newly renovated facility will enable people with severe disabilities and health needs to receive services in an environment that focuses on enhancing daily living skills, promoting daily exercise along with pursuing a variety of artistic options. Another key area is the creation of a program dedicated to providing services to people with autism and their families.

We are excited about our new facility and how it will enable us to breathe life into our mission and vision. We are thrilled to share with you renderings of our new facility and hope that when the time comes, you will consider a financial contribution.

Thanks for your ongoing support.

Donald Rowe, Executive DirectorLynn Davis, President

THE ARC CARROLL COUNTY | FY13 ANNUAL REPORT6

Celebrating 60

NeXT Year, The Arc Carroll County will be hitting a bit of a milestone. The organization that people with disabilities rely upon for services will turn 6o years old.

It is a milestone for The Arc. It also is a testament to the determination of the parents of children with special needs who founded our organization nearly 60 years ago.

Marge Wickes is grateful every day that her parents, Fern and Gertrude Smith, along with others, helped establish The Arc.

Marge was a little girl when her parents participated in The Arc’s inaugural meeting back in 1954 at The Westminster Community Health Center. Marge’s twin brother, Michael Smith, has Down syndrome. Marge’s parents, like the other parents at that meeting, wanted one thing: a fulfilling life for their child.

“My father had gone to Springfield State Hospital and saw people with Down syndrome there,” she said. “He thought, “Well, they don’t belong there.”

From there, The Arc Carroll County was born. Marge has watched the organization grow over the years. She remembers the days when The Arc outgrew its building on Route 140 and opened the doors to our building at 180 Kriders Church Road in 1986. The new building was needed to accommodate the growing assembly work being done at The Arc.

Back then, companies such as Black & Decker and Random House contracted with The Arc to have the people we serve stamp books and package items for shipments. The work was performed at The Arc and people were paid by the piece. Marge’s brother, Michael, loved the assembly job, she said. Every Friday he would get off work and ask her if it was Monday yet, she said.

For years, the sheltered workshop model worked well for the people The Arc supports. Then the economy changed and so did people’s attitudes about sheltered workshops. The Arc’s leaders decided to shift our efforts away from the assembly line work at our building and focus on placing our folks in jobs in our community.

Tom Ferguson, who served on The Arc’s board and helped raised funds for our capital campaign in 1986, said the building that was once considered state-of-the art is now outdated. It needs to be updated to accommodate the needs of the people it now serves and the needs of a growing autistic population, he said.

“We want The Arc to be here and serve the community for the next 50 years,” Tom said. “We certainly need a facility that will meet that demand.”

The leadership at The Arc realizes that the days of the sheltered workshop model are behind us. Fortunately, many of the people we serve, with the assistance of job coaches, have been able to find paying jobs in the community. The Arc currently has 80 people working at 70 businesses in our community. We are proud of that accomplishment.

However, we still serve many people who spend their days with us here at our building. The building, which once housed forklifts and assembly lines, was not designed with them in mind.

The building is mostly large, unfinished warehouse space with concrete floors, cinder block walls

WWW.ARCCARROLL.COM 7

Years and Going Strongand exposed lighting. We have one changing room for the people who spend their days with us. The building doesn’t offer those we serve much privacy or opportunities for assistance in smaller settings.

The building also lacks lower kitchen countertops and appliances that would help the people who use wheelchairs hone their cooking skills. Most of our folks love to cook.

We hope that a $2.5 million renovation to our building will change that and make life better for the people who receive their services here at our building each day.

Just like in 1986, we will rely upon the community’s support and generous donors just like you to make that happen.

Our renovated building will include: a gym, a handicap-accessible kitchen, a cultural arts room, a bright and open cafeteria, a computer room, a community meeting and training room and a much-needed autism resource center.

Gary and Dale Davis are excited about the upcoming changes to our building and the difference they believe it will make in their daughter Jamie’s life. Jamie, who is autistic, has been receiving services at The Arc for eight

years.

She learned to read about five years ago, and that opened a whole new world to Jamie, including the ability to speak.

Jamie didn’t learn to read in a cavernous room. She learned in a small, intimate setting, where she could work one-on-one with her instructor.

Jamie’s parents see The Arc’s renovated building offering that kind of private, one-on-one

space, where great change is possible.

They also see the possibilities for social growth with the addition of a gym.

“Having multi-purpose rooms, where people can go and exercise

and dance would make their lives completely different,” Gary Davis said. “It would be fun.”

The Arc is a place where people such as Michael and Jamie hone their skills to find jobs, make friends and embark on their journey toward fulfilling lives.

Marge Wickes knows that. She has seen first-hand the difference The Arc has made in her brother’s life over the last six decades.

“I think it is one of the most amazing places ever,” Marge said.

With your help, and an updated building The Arc will continue to help people with disabilities on their journey toward a fulfilling life for the next 60 years.
