Dear Snow Leopard Conservancy Supporters:

Your donations in 2018 made a significant difference for conservationof wild snow leopards.

You have helped the Conservancy move toward greater collaborationand alliance-making, with organizations that strengthen our capacity tofacilitate community based conservation. For example, by joining theMountain Partnership, which is hosted by the Food and AgricultureOrganization of the United Nations, the Conservancy is better able to bringgovernments into programs that improve the lives of mountain communitieswhile protecting mountain environments.

The Conservancy led a policy study on how major structural changestaking place in Nepal’s government might impact conservation. Then, thanksto your support providing the required co-financing, we received a majorthree-year grant from the Darwin Initiative. With this grant our team is able totake the lessons learned from our policy study, and apply them in two areas ofNepal to help local communities fund and promote snow leopard conservation.

Activities being carried out by our Nepali partners include developmentof training manuals for newly elected local government officials, a baseline ofsnow leopard and prey populations, and creation of a special Snow Leopardtrek, as part of new enterprise development.

Alliances on a smaller scale can also be highly effective. In Kyrgyzstan, the snow leopard was the mascot for the second biennial World NomadGames. As the Games drew some 10,000 spectators, this presented a greatopportunity for our Land of the Snow Leopard Network to educate peopleabout Kyrgyzstan’s sacred big cats. Your funding underwrote a playperformed by middle and high school students based on the traditionalprecept that tragedy will befall anyone who kills a snow leopard.

Please join us in celebrating the local champions of snow leopardconservation, as featured in these pages. We are so grateful for your supportto both the Conservancy and these mountain communities.

CELEBRATING THE LOCAL CHAMPIONS OF

The Land of Snow Leopard (LOSL) Network includes over onehundred organizations and individuals, with seven CountryCoordinators. Our program area spans more than 600,000 squaremiles, and the countries and languages of Kyrgyzstan, Mongolia,Tajikistan, and the Altai and Buryat Republics of Russia.

Here, the snow leopard is not only a flagship species forbiocultural diversity; it is the central axis of ancient traditions, legendsand beliefs. These beautiful, mysterious animals are protectors ofsacred mountains, a unifying force, and a source of spiritual powerand wisdom.

Our founding members and Network guides include Shamans, Sacred Site Guardians, andrevered Elders. The greater LOSL community includes indigenous educators, historians, scientists, traditional hunters, and lifelong herders who know the ancient practices for reading and living in theirenvironment.

Above: Charleen Gavette, Conservancy Program Officer, clarifies a point at a recent workshop. LOSL members created

a geo-spatial App to record observational data, includingwildlife sightings and poaching incidents. These data can

support the Global Snow Leopard Ecosystem Protection Plan(globalsnowleopard.org) and its goal of protecting 20

landscape-level snow leopard populations by the year 2020.

LOSL members collect interviews, stories, photos, and videos for a unique database. Eachentry is summarized, categorized, and translatedinto Russian and English.

The summaries allow for sharing the data, identifying commonalities, creating reports, anddeveloping educational tools. Our members arealready taking an active lead in revivingtraditional practices that save snow leopards.

This program is a unique attempt tostandardize the integration of culturally-importantdata into conservation planning and action forsnow leopards.
