To our faithful volunteers and supporters:

Today we bring you an overview of Seton Center’s progress in bringing hope to the valley in the 2017 fiscal year.

Thanks to your prayers and generous support of our Outreach Program and Seton Family Store, we have been able to expand our programs to reach out to more people and work with them to bring about lasting changes in their lives.

Emergency material assistance, referrals, workshops, the Getting Ahead and DePaul Dental programs, to mention a few, have brought substantial relief to many who are struggling to make ends meet.  At the beginning of the year, we had no idea so many great events would take place to enrich our programs. We are excited about the creation of new partnerships with other organizations who are helping us build stronger, more sustainable communities.

The faith communities of Thurmont and Emmitsburg continue to be valuable partners in our mission.  The Lions Clubs of Emmitsburg and Thurmont, St. Vincent de Paul Society, United Way of Frederick County, Mount St. Mary’s University and many other organizations have worked with us to relieve the urgent needs of our neighbors.

We have been blessed to also receive support through grants from Community Foundation, Frederick County Department of Aging, Raskob Foundation, National Cooperative Bank, Knott Foundation and Mission and Ministry, Inc. We could not have provided all the services without their support.

So we pray you are encouraged to see the fruit of God’s work among us, made possible by your partnership in relieving poverty and hopelessness!

OPEN HOUSE

In the fall of 2016, we celebrated the creation of a new logo by volunteer graphic designer Janet Ochs with an open house event. State, County and local dignitaries and many supporters joined us to unveil our new sign, take a tour of spaces newly renovated by donors and volunteers, and learn about the programs and services we offer.

Thurmont Trinity United Church of Christ Pastor Sean DeLawder, County Council President Bud Otis, County Executive Jan Gardner, State Senate Representative Julianna Albowicz for Senator Chris Van Hollen and Emmitsburg Mayor Don Briggs joined us for the unveiling of our new sign.

As you can see, Seton Center’s revenue was $89,405 short of covering our expenses. Your support is crucial to assuring Seton Center’s future so we may accomplish our mission to work with our neighbors to build a hopeful future. Our new location will be a God-sent blessing, but will also challenge us to make sure folks know where we are and use the space wisely to expand our programs for equipping our neighbors to become healthier and do more than just get by.

Seton Center is deeply grateful to all who have donated to the mission of bringing hope to the valley. Financial, in-kind donations, Family Store patronage and encouragement from each individual, organization, grant funder and all who use our services has enabled us to be effective servants to this community. We also want to thank the Daughters of Charity who so generously invest in this ministry.

BUILD YOUR RESOURCES PROGRAM

The Build Your Resources program offers varied, relevant, monthly resource workshops to the entire community, regardless of income level. Subjects include many of the 11 resources identified for success in the Getting Ahead program, such as: emotional, financial, hidden class rules, integrity, mental, motivation, physical, relationships, spiritual and support system.

The following partners offered their time and expertise to provide these free learning experiences: Maryland CASH Campaign, In Order for Life, PNC Bank, InterFaith Housing, The Money Mentor Group, local Pastors, Sherry McKlurkin NCC, LCPC and Second Chances Garage.

Second Chance Garage is just one of the local agencies who lead workshops – here in the area of the physical resource to learn how to purchase a used car safely. “Charity is not charity if not accompanied by justice.”

GETTING AHEAD

Getting Ahead in a Just-Gettin’-By World is an internationally recognized, 16-20 week program known for its interactive small group format. No one “teaches” participants what they should learn – they work to discover what resources they need to move out of poverty. Participants are called Investigators and are provided a small stipend for the time they spend doing research. The information they gather is shared, which benefits other Investigators, Seton Center and our community in our work together.

As just one example of the empowerment this program offers, Class 1 Investigator graduate Missy returned as a co-facilitator for Classes 2 and beyond. Once shy and unsure of her abilities, Missy is now a guiding presence for others and a powerful advocate in her community.

We are deeply grateful to all who support this program through donations of evening meals that are central to the team building experience. $600 Investigator sponsorships are another way you can be part of long-term growth and change becoming a reality.

On February 16, 2017, the second class of Investigators, Robert, Rosemarie, Alexandria, Wendy, Maryesta, Karen, Alliana and Bonnie planned for and participated in their graduation to celebrate their accomplishments.

GENEROUS COMMUNITY

In June of 2017, an older couple came to Seton Center, embarrassed to ask for help. As part of the shrinking middle class and at the brink of retirement, their health began to suffer. The husband could not return to work. In addition to losing their income, they also lost their health insurance. Their retirement savings were quickly swallowed up by surgical costs and medications. They never had to face this kind of situation before and came humbly to ask for help.

A Case Manager worked with the couple to provide referrals to help with these expenses. On top of that, the roof of their home was leaking. To help save their last asset, student volunteers from Gonzaga High School scraped the old paint from the roof, but were not able to repaint it.

Knowing God always supplies, Seton  Center reached out to the community, which responded generously – covering a plea to paint and repair the roof through Facebook in less than 2 days!

We contracted Personal Touch Construction, LLC of Thurmont, and partners Steve Moser and Tac Eckenrode provided excellent craftsmanship and care to paint the roof and repair additional holes they found at a discounted rate. One less worry for our over-burdened neighbors.

You, our community, are making a difference!

CASE MANAGEMENT

This is just one of many examples of how encouraging case management can bridge the gap between grief and desperation toward hope and wholeness. Your support makes a difference in the lives of our neighbors and communities.

A couple came to Seton Center for help and hope. Case Managers walked with them through many issues, even accompanying the wife to her driver’s test.

During their last visit to Seton Center for the 2016 Christmas Helping Hands program, this hope-filled couple happily shared that they purchased 2 cars on their own, both have steady jobs (with benefits!) and remain in healthy recovery, bills are paid and they were planning to get married and welcome a child.
