A Great YearMy first goals upon accepting the role of Executive Director of the Lighthouse ArtCenter in May 2016 were to ensure that the generous contributions from our donors and supporters were achieving the Lighthouse ArtCenter’s business and community objectives. Furthermore, we needed to produce the artistic excel-lence LAC patrons had come to expect. I am proud to say that we continue to succeed on both fronts.

The generosity of those who enter the Lighthouse ArtCenter Gallery and School of Art sets the bar higher with each passing year. Our two notable fund-raisers in 2018 thus far – D’Art for Art and Plein Air – set records that will push us even more rigorously in 2019. We are grateful and encouraged to know that our loyal supporters, the surrounding counties and municipalities, and our extraor-dinarily talented artists and teachers are enthused by the growth and efforts being made by our energetic staff. They make the board, me and our curator look masterful.

A very encouraging moment came earlier this year when the Palm Beach Cultural Council and the state of Florida announced that the Lighthouse ArtCenter would receive a well-deserved grant.

It is fair to ask who benefits from the gifts and grants we receive. It short, it is you. Our community. Palm Beach County, Martin County, Jupiter and Tequesta, and all of the cities, towns, and developments within our driving and vacationing reach.

There is a reason man began to sketch his life on the walls of caves. Because it’s a form of communication that later became a trite but true statement: A picture is indeed worth a thousand words. It tells us of beauty, of history, of science, of nature and above all else, of ourselves. Look into a drawing, a painting, a sculpture, a piece of hand-crafted jewelry or any other form of art and you can be reminded of the things that make living wonderful.

Our mission is communicating through the arts. We reach out, rather than waiting for you to come to us. We believe in art’s power and want to share it with our entire community, not just here at 373 Tequesta Drive.

However, I hope you will visit the Lighthouse ArtCenter many times over the course of this year and disappear into your memories and excitement.

Art is wonderful. Life is wonderful. We are here to enjoy every minute we are able to walk this glorious planet.

And while you’re enjoying it, remember those who need your assistance. We will be there with pencils, paper, paints, brushes, and all other tools to help children, the elderly, and the underprivileged, so art can put a smile on their faces as well.

Nancy Politsch, Executive Director

WelcomeDuring Fiscal Year 2016/2017, under the leadership of our new Executive Director, Nancy Politsch, the Lighthouse ArtCenter Gallery and School of Art focused on a transformation of our facilities and an expansion of cultural experiences for the community. With a background in portfolio management for the Wells Fargo Private Bank, Nancy immediately tackled the challenge of accurate record keeping and a positive bottom line. Nancy implemented a state of the art advanced accounting system that enables efficient real time tracking and interaction of all accounting aspects of our non-profit donor, membership, class registration, and income/expense files. The School of Art continues to expand its class and workshop offerings, adding exciting new artists to our extraordinary staff faculty, introducing innovative visiting artists, and strengthening our Outreach programs. In the upcoming year, the new Director of Education, Holly Grizzi, will be developing Art Therapy classes in partnership with the Jupiter Medical Center. Due to the creative efforts of our Curator, Janeen Mason, in identifying exceptional talent for exhibits and events, the Lighthouse ArtCenter has gotten the attention of the media and has received increased recognition, feature articles, and positive commentary from the art community and news organizations. Our membership is at an all-time high and the 3rd Thursday events have been very well attended. We are also hopeful to have record attendance at our signature D’art for Art annual event and the Plein Air Festival with 35 award-winning artists. The Lighthouse ArtCenter Gallery and School of Art are fortunate to have an exceptional staff that are energetic, enthusiastic, and committed to our Mission to serve the community. Integral to our success are our volunteers who support us in so many important ways. The volunteers give generously of their time and talents and we are grateful for their contributions. Presently, the Lighthouse ArtCenter Gallery and School of Art are at maximum capacity. In order to continue to support our increased demand and serve a rapidly growing community, we need a new facility that will enable us to consolidate our two locations and expand our programs. To reach that goal, we will be initiating an exploration of our options and a campaign to make our dream a reality. Thank you for your generous support. We look forward to an exciting future. Patricia A. DeAloiaPresident, Board of Directors

Fern SamuelsFern Samuels received her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from Loyola University in Chicago, Illinois, and her Master of Fine Arts from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She retired from the Art Department of Columbia College Chicago where she taught for twenty-five years as an Associate Professor.

Following her retire-ment, a scholarship in her name was established to help developing art students.

Samuels was a founder and past president of ARC gallery, one of the first women’s cooperative gal-leries in the world.

She exhibited in fifteen museum exhibitions and had nineteen solo exhibitions in her lifetime. The Retrospective Show and Sale at the Lighthouse ArtCenter in Tequesta was her twentieth. Through the course of her career she won nine first place awards.

Fern Samuels was a member of the National Society of Women Artists and is listed in Who’s Who in America and Who’s Who of American Women. Upon moving to Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, she became one of the charter members of Florida Artist Guild which continues to thrive.

Cornelia T. BaileyCornelia T. Bailey was a gen-erous member and supporter of the Lighthouse ArtCenter since 1997. Her contributions helped to nurture arts and cultural programming to over 20,000 guests annually in and around our cultural heartbeat in northern Palm Beach County.

Mrs. Bailey’s passion for the arts extended to many organizations including the Maltz Jupiter Theatre, the Kravis Center for the Performing Arts, Norton Museum of Art, and Palm Beach Opera. Her lifetime commitment to philanthropy extended to health care organizations from Florida to New York.

“Philanthropic families create significant legacies that benefit generations, we celebrate the oppor-tunities Cornelia T. Bailey provided the Lighthouse ArtCenter, and we will carry on our work in her honor,” said Nancy Politsch, Executive Director.
