AT 6 PM TO 7.30 PM.
1. Introduction
Friends,
It is with immense pleasure that I am presenting this report before you. This is
our 20th anniversary year and I feel myself very fortunate and proud to have
been presented all these 20 reports continuously for you. It's a very are honour
and I am thankful to all of you for giving me this opportunity. It was a long and
tiresome journey for Adarsh since its inception. Starting with 7 kids we now stand
to extend our services to, more than 400 kids. Starting with just a couple of part
time special educators and a Physio therapist, we now stand where the
programmes are imparted through a strong 140 odd members of staff. Most
importantly over these period 75 children have been sent to normal scheme. A
rare feet to cherish with and we all should feel proud for that. Over these period
more than 60 small, and large projects befitting to the children and society have
been implemented. Barring a few all of then achieved their desired result. It is to
be noted that till date right from the date of inception not even a single rupee
has been spent on any extra cost as reimbursement for any Trustees, may be as
their travelling cost, or remuneration of any sort and for that matter nothing has
been sanctioned and nothing has been requested by any of our Trustee. A very
rare feet in which we all can be really proud off where every single rupee
received as donations are spent only for the benefit of the children we are taking
care off. And on, behalf of all of you I can guarantee the same in the coming
years also. For your immediate reference a small details of the projects we have
undertaken over this period is shown as a part of my report.
Friends, as usually it has been a pleasure for me to report the activities of Adarsh
which is as usual studded with activities. We have this much of, activities to
report that I have compressed all into a couple of sentences. Hence I may be

b. Human Resources
i. Organization Staff structure
Staff structure of Adarsh is the most important factor which influences the quality
of its various rehabilitation programmes. Among the special schools in the State,
probably Adarsh is the one which has the best student staff ratio. As already
mentioned, the main rehabilitation centre has a Principal and Vice Principal to
supervise all activities. The centre has140 Staff members which include teaching,
non-teaching and voluntary staff. The entire activities are segregated into 8 major
units. This is based on the type of children, their disability and their functional
abilities. In addition there are technical units and a unit for extracurricular
activities. All these units put together have 109 staff. This we maintain a student
teacher ratio of 2-3:1. Each class has around 8-10 children and to look after them
there is a full time special educator and an assistant. A unit of such 28 classes,
with each unit have a head teacher and 13 such head teachers report to Vice
Principal, who in turn reports to the Principal. The principal will report to
Secretary and the Secretary to the Trust. In addition, the centre has 4drivers and
8 bus assistants. At Child Development Evaluation Intervention and Research
Centre, a Coordinator supervises 5 staff members and their activities. In the
community projects, we have a Developmental therapist who solely manages Risk
Baby Unit and 15 staff members for 4 Home Based Rehabilitation units. They all
in turn report to Executive Secretary and he to the Secretary. All the staff
members are adequately trained and experienced in their field of expertise which
is considered very important in rehabilitation of children with challenges.

As far Adarsh is concerned, the main goal of the rehabilitation is to make the
children independent in their life so as to equip them to lead a dignified life.
During the academic year 2017-18, Adarsh could send 5 children to normal
school after their successful training. A brief note on each child is noted in the
following paragraph.
iv. Success stories
a. Mary Ann Christel
Mary Ann Christel joined Adarsh at the age of 1 year. She was a premature
child with delay in all her developmental milestones. She had only good social
smile at the time of admission. With the help of intensive Early Intervention
training programmes, she has achieved all the major motor milestones. She is
a child with Spastic Cerebral Palsy. With the help of the training, spasticity is
found to be reduced very well. Now she is able to walk with slight support.
She is very active and has normal intelligence level. She got admission in
Rajagiri Christhu Jayanthi School, Vypin.
12
12
b. AdhidevArun
Adhidev Arun came to Adarsh at 9 months. All his developmental milestones
were delayed. With 2 years of intensive training programme he has achieved
all his developmental milestones. Now he is going an Angnawaadi near to his
house. He is able to walk independently.
c. Asna
Asna joined Adarsh with mild delay in her walking. She achieved the skill of
independent walking within 6 months of intensive developmental therapy
programmes. She is attending an Anganwaadi near to her house.
d. Andrews
Unlike other children, Andrews was a child with flaccid Cerebral Palsy. All his
muscles were weak and floppy. He came to Adarsh at the age of 1 year. He
too achieved all the delayed milestones with the help of intensive
physiotherapy and supportive training programmes.
e. Abhiram
Abhirama child with Spastic Diplegia Cerebral Palsy was assessed at the age
of 1 ½ years. At the time of admission, he had attained all his developmental
milestones except independent standing and walking. It was also difficult for
him to stand from sitting position. In 6 month, he attained all the delayed
milestones. He started walking independently at the age of 2 years.
6. Major projects/activities of the year.
6.1. Main Rehabilitation Centre
The main rehabilitation centre is the pillar of the Trust. Started with 7 children in
1998, today the main centre has over 270 children. Focused and scientific
rehabilitation measures, experienced and dedicated staff members, cooperation
from the parents are some of the vital elements which helped Adarsh to grow to
this level in the last 20 years of relentless journey in the field of rehabilitation.
13
13
Last year, 68 children took admission and 56 children discontinued their training
due to various technical as well as personal reasons. To take care of these
children Adarsh has a team of 109 trained and experienced staff members at the
main centre. That team includes Special Educators, Physio, Occupational, Speech
and Psychotherapists, Medical doctors, and other non-teaching staff members.
All the children were adequately provided with necessary therapy and training
programmes. Parents of around 80% of children accompany their wards during
their rehabilitation programme in Adarsh. Staff members were regularly provided
with hands on training programmes, opportunities to attend workshops and
seminars to upgrade their technical and training expertise. Last year they
attended the following seminars and workshops.
i. On Learning Disability organized by KE College Mannanam, Kottayam.
ii. On Behavioural Therapy organized by Prayatna Rehabilitation Centre,
Palarivattom, Ernakulam.
iii. On Oral Placement Therapy organized by National Institute of Physical
Medicine and Rehabilitation at Kellettumkara, Irinjalakkuda, Thrissur.
iv. On Vocational in house training programme at Adarsh.
v. Special Curriculum Training organized by Education Department, Govt. of
Kerala.
The centre has an initial comprehensive evaluation process followed by
prescribed training and therapies on a classroom basis. During the academic year
apart from the initial evaluation, each child was assessed twice and parents were
called on for analysis of evaluation report.
6.1.1. National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS)
NIOS scheme, though has a tough syllabus, is really useful for children with
challenges especially those with mild, moderate and normal level of intelligence.
Mainly children with Cerebral Palsy and to a certain extent children with Autism
and children with Down syndrome are pursuing this scheme at various level.
Being an accredited centre of NIOS for its Open Basic Education programme,
14
14
children from other school can register with Adarsh and appear examination.
Apart from OBE programme, Adarsh has facility for Secondary and Senior
Secondary level schooling. In 2017-18, 140 children from different special schools
attended examination under OBE programme of which only 34 are from Adarsh.
6.1.2. Vocational Rehabilitation Programmes
Chappathi Making Unit
This unit was started in 2016. Initially it was managed by staff members and
parents of challenged children. But in the reporting period, we could make the
unit managed entirely by children of vocational unit. 5 children from the unit
make chappathi and earn a good remuneration. One of them is paying his
transportation fees through the income from the unit. On an average 200-
300chappathees are made a day.
Cake making Unit
This was started in December 2017. The unit is now managed by 2 staff members
and a parent. From the coming year we intend children from vocational unit to
be included. The feedback on this unit is excellent and we see a bright future for
this project.
Candle Making Unit.
Almost all the children from the vocational unit of Adarsh are capable of making
candles independently and they are making a good income from the unit. They
are getting regular orders from nearby churches and shops.
6.1.3. Sensory Integration Therapy Room.
This is an advanced therapy programmes for challenged children especially for
children with Autism and Cerebral Palsy. A separate room is set up with all
sensory inputs for 5 common senses and 2 extra senses like Proprioceptive and
vestibular senses. This room was installed with the help of HDFC Ltd Ernakulam.
6.1.4. Virtual Realty Programme.
15
15
With the help of TATA Consultancy Services, Adarsh has set up a room for Virtual
Realty programme. It gives a real life experience for the children with the help of
a software. Since it is worked in a game mode, the audio and video components
of the programme encourage children to improve their attention and focus. This
unit focuses on adult children with Cerebral Palsy and is mainly to improve their
coordination and balance which are otherwise difficult to gain with normal physio
and occupational therapy programmes. As of now 12 children are using this
programme regularly and almost all of them showed remarkable improvements in
their functional skills. Moreover, it helps them to get motivated and thus to
enhance their self-esteem. Now gross motor functions are the main focus, but
gradually fine motor skills also will be covered.
6.2. Child Development Evaluation Intervention and Research Centre.
Started with an objective to provide a one stop centre for comprehensive
evaluation and assessment of all development disorders in children, now the
centre also provides remedial intervention programmes for children with Learning
Disability and need based therapy programmes to children with other disabilities
like Cerebral Palsy, Autism and Down syndrome. During the reporting period, on
an average 50-60 children attended the centre every month. This is in addition to
5-10 children who came for evaluation. There are 7 regular staff members and 2
consultants at the centre. It is still operating in a rented building at Vennala
(present location).
6.3. Risk Baby Unit
Started in 2005, Risk Baby Unit is one of the special community based activities
that the Trust does. Started in 2 Hospitals, now the unit functions in 5 Hospitals
in town. It is managed by a Developmental Therapist who is trained and
specialized in dealing small babies who are born with any risk like Low Birth
Weight, Prematurity, etc. The unit is working under close supervision of a
Neonatologist of respective hospital. Each new born baby, born with risk, is
thoroughly screened and assessed with the help of scientific evaluation tools to
identify potential delay or deviation from normal development and if something
unusual is noted, the baby is given regular stimulation and therapies right from
16
16
the beginning until a change is developed. In 2017-18, in 5 hospitals, where we
work 601 babies were assessed and among them around 20 have had delay in
developments.
6.4. Home Based Rehabilitation Programme (HBR)
This was a very innovative programme of the Trust. The programme was started
in 2010 with the help of Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd. A Home Based
Rehabilitation Unit, consist of a Physiotherapist, a Special Educator and an
Assistant Teacher goes to selected children’s home and provide them with
necessary therapy and training. The selected children generally are from
financially poor background and they are otherwise not in a position to bring
their child to any special centre like Adarsh due to technical, financial as well as
logistic problems. An exclusive vehicle is deployed for this service for each unit.
We have such 4 HBR units functioning in Adarsh. The fourth one was started in
2017-18 with the help of Kanco rIngradients Ltd., Kalamasserry. The other 3 units
are supported by BPCL. With these 4 units, we could help 131 children last year
covering 15 Panchayats and Muncipalities of Ernakulam District. New proposal

7.1. Parent Teacher Association (PTA)
PTA is an essential body in any school. Similarly Adarsh also has a dynamic
and very active PTA. The present PTA with 13 members led by Shri. Kaloor
Unnikrishnan joined Adarsh in all its activities and projects. In 2017-18 PTA
organized useful programme for the children, parents and staff members.
Medical Camp by VKM Hospital was one of them. PTA day was celebrated on
23rd February 2018. Cine Actor and famous Anchor Shri. Govind Padmasurya
23
23
was the chief guest of the function. Almost all the parents and staff members
participated in the cultural programmes.
7.2. Major achievements of 2017-18
1. Virtual Reality Programme
Virtual Reality is a very new word in the technology field. As the name says,
a virtual environment is created using a software where people get a feeling
that the environment is real. Recently studies show that it has an effect on
children with challenges especially to improve their confidence and self-
esteem. Finding these benefits, Adarsh in association with TATA Consultancy
Service introduced a Virtual Reality Lab in Adarsh. In the initial phase only 5
children were selected and later 7 more were added. Now the system is being
used by 12 children regularly. According to our Therapist it produces
remarkable changes in children mainly improving balance and coordination.
Parents are also very happy with the programme. In the second phase, more
fine motor activities will be included using leap motion technics. We take this
opportunity to extend our thanks to Shri. Robin Tommy, who coordinated the
entire project. Our thanks are also to Shri. Dinesh P Thampi who initiated this
programme and of course to all team members of TCS.
2. 10th Anniversary of CDEIRC
On the 10thAnniversary of CDEIRC, the centre selected 5 normal UP schools
nearby and identified children with learning performance with the help of
their teachers. These children were given reading and writing competition to
understand their difficulties in learning. It was really shocking to see the
result. A good number of children, being affected with some kind of learning
issues, do not get sufficient training to solve their problems. CDEIRC gave
prizes to children with best performance and best schools. In the next phase,
if the school Management is willing, CDEIRC plans to do a detailed evaluation
of selected children and help them to overcome their learning issues.
3. Family Counseling programme
24
24
This is a special programme started in 2017-18. The intention was to provide
family counseling and child guidance. But gradually it was found that more
than parents, staff members are using this service. As far as the organization
is concerned, staff members are the pillars. In this context, this counseling
programme really helped a good number of staff to overcome their mental
stress and related family issues.
4. Bubbles – Adarsh Supermarket
With the help of His Highness Super Market, Tripunithura, Adarsh set up
a Mini Super Market called “Bubbles” as part of its vocational
rehabilitation programme with an objective to help children to earn
something so that they get a feeling of independence and dignity in
life. It was officially inaugurated on 9th March by Shri. Nooh IAS.,
Director, Social Justice Department, Govt. of Kerala. Initial results are
highly encouraging.
5. 16th December programme

Shri. Gopinath Muthukad, a well-known magician and a Philanthropist, is
famous for his empathetic approach to challenged children. Under his
initiative, his magic academy at Trivandrum taught magic to selected
children and gave them employment in his firm. Similarly he started an
academy in Adarsh. Around 15 children were selected and are studying
magic and all are found to be very enthusiastic and interested. Ultimate
aim is to give magic as a source of income as well as a method of
rehabilitation. We take this opportunity to extend our sincere thanks to
Shri. Gopinath Muthukad, Adv. Hari Raj and Shri Sreekumar for their
support.
iv. Residential Project with Asset Homes
On this day we announced a big and ambitious project called: a
residential village for challenged children associating with Asset
Homes one of the leading builders in India. It is a dream project of
Adarsh where children above 18 can live with their family. The
26
26
project also aims to provide lifelong rehabilitation and this is
ensured even after their parents’ demise. The projects is still in its
initial stage of implementation. We take this opportunity to extend
our sincere thanks to Shri. Sunil Kumar, MD of Asset Homes for this
partnership.
v. A new colourful official brochure of Adarsh was released. Thanks
to Dr. C. Mohammed Ashraf, Chairman and Medical Director of Craft
Hospital and Research Centre Kodungallur who financially helped
Adarsh to bring out the brochure and Shri. Sleeba Varghese who
designed the brochure in a very subsidized rate. It came out really
nice.

drawn by Shri. Anjan Satheesh a person affected with Cerebral Palsy
and a staff member of Adarsh, was released on the day by Shri.
Madhu S. Nair, Chairman and Managing Director Cochin Shipyard

6. Hand Surgery.
Dr. Raja Sabhapathy a famous Plastic surgeon from Ganga Hospital offered full
support to Adarsh in helping its children to undergo special hand surgery for
children with Cerebral Palsy. A team from Adarsh, Including Shri. Aswany Kumar

thanks are also to Dr. Praveen Bharadwaj, Shri. Gopinath and other team
members for their support.

7. Support from Rotary Club of Cochin Central.
This is a big project for strengthening the technical infrastructure as well as
therapeutic measures of Adarsh Charitable Trust. The main objectives are:
i. Setting up smart classrooms
ii. Procure advanced therapeutic equipment to strengthen the therapeutic
services
iii. Assisting Home Based Rehabilitation programme
iv. Digitalization of training and therapy evaluation and monitoring services
The project cost is Rs.35 Lakhs. The project is officially sanctioned and it will be
implemented in June 2018. Thanks to Shri. Narayanan kutty and his team for all
the support.
7.3. Projects for 2018-19
1. Organic Farming
Though tried several times in the past, nothing concrete has happened in this
area. Shri. Binoy Chelur, a Philanthropist and an expert in this field has promised
all the help to do this project plugging the lacunas we had in practical
implementation. We are planning this in this year.
2. Sheltered Workshop
The objective is to set up a sheltered workshop for challenged children above 18
years to make them independent in their life through suitable vocation so that
they can a lead a dignified adult life. A proposal from Adarsh has been
sanctioned by Social Justice Department of Kerala Govt. and the Department had
released sum of Rs.7.1 Lakhs as 1st installment. The programme will be officially
started by June 2018.
3. Neuro Visual Rehabilitation
This is one area where we need to have more inputs from Giridhar Eye Institute.
Basic evaluation of children are over. This year hopefully with the help of Dr.
Neena and team we would be able to start an effective Neuro Visual
rehabilitation programme. They promised all help to take this forward.
28
28
4. The Breakfast Revolution- a Project to decrease malnutrition
Relatively a new concept in the field of rehabilitation. On examination, our
medical doctors identified a good number of children are malnourished. To help
them, Adarsh with the help of The Breakfast revolution, an NGO based in
Mumbai is planning to introduce vitamin and mineral rich food items to the
identified children to improve their health condition. We need to find a donor to
support this programme. Approximately the programme may cost around 3 Lakhs
per annum.
5. Cerebral Palsy Research & Development
Being a full-fledged rehabilitation centre for children with Cerebral Palsy, Adarsh
is quite a well-known Special School among the public. In order to make it a
centre of excellence, a Cerebral Palsy Research and Development wing is
envisaged. The intention is to give the Cerebral Palsy affected children a one stop
remedy centre for their primary as well as associated issues.
8. Financial Report
a. Basic Financial Analysis
Audited Financial Report is already distributed among the members. Total annual
expenditure of the Trust for the FY 2017-18 is 222.21 Lakhs. The total income
collected was Rs. 325.88 Lakhs. This includes a single donation of Rs.1.5 Crores from
Sarojini Trilok Nath Trust, New Delhi. That resulted a net surplus of Rs. 102.66 Lakhs.
A graphical representation of income and expenses of the Trust for the FY 2017-18is
shown below. When comparing the financial status of previous year, there was a dip
of over Rs.10 Lakhs on the donation received. But on the other hand there is hike of
Rs. 22 Lakhs on the expenditure side. On analysis it is found that all the main
projects like Risk Baby Unit, Home Based Rehabilitation Unit, CDEIRC etc. are running
as usual without much deficit. The main highlight of the reporting period is the
receipt of Rs.1.5 Crores from Sarojini Trilok Nath Trust. The Trust is thankful to Shri.
K. Neelakantan for his sincere and dedicated service to the Trust for garnering this
donation. We realize that only with Shri. Neelakantan’s effort we could get the
support from this Trust. We appreciate the effort taken by him for this. On behalf of

29
the Trust, he made a presentation to Trustees of Sarojini Trilok Nath Trust on the
nature and activities of Adarsh. Thanks to Shri Rajiv Kohli, a Trustee of the Sarojini
Trilok Nath Trust who was instrumental in getting this big help. It was reported

for arranging this programme at Delhi. It was a very big function by its size and cross
section of personal who attended this.

c. Major future financial implications – An overview
1. Salary and allowances is the major financial implication for the Trust. Apart from the
main rehabilitation centre all other projects are self-sustained. As usual vehicle
service is incurring a huge burden for the Trust. Last year alone, there was a deficit of
over 20 Lakhs under this head.
2. Association with The Breakfast Revolution for decreasing the incidences of
malnutrition among the children of Adarsh will cost around 3 Lakhs a year.
3. In order to stop the leakage issue and adding more space to the rehabilitation
centre, construction work is due and this may cost around 18.5 Lakhs
4. Installing Solar system to run the entire rehabilitation centre and CDEIRC., a proposal
for 20 KV Solar Panel is suggested. This will cost Adarsh around 15-17 Lakhs
5. If the residential project comes out well, Adarsh might need another 1 Crore for
constructing a Vocational rehabilitation centre at the premises.

11. Conclusion
Friends it has been an eventful year as far as Adarsh is concerned. The coming
year is going to be very important for us. As reported we have envisaged many
programmes for next year. Our residential programme, 20th year celebrations,
improving our infrastructure are some of the important ones. For any
organization twenty years is not a very big period. But for us it was all eventful.
The efforts we have made to build an institution of this kind is something
unparalleled. We realize that there are countless individuals and organizations
who are our well-wishers. We realize that it is only because of their selfless
support and motivation that we are today where we are. We also realize that this
is going to be there for our organization in abundance in the coming years also.
At this juncture I cannot remember any single name to specifically mention. But I

do remember many many names and pictures flashing through my mind. I am
sure you also will have the same feeling. So on behalf of all of you, on behalf of
our children and parents let me put on record our heart-felt and sincere thanks
for all the good deed these millions of individuals and corporate have done for
us and who stood with us in our tiring days. The Trust salutes all of them.
Friends, I cannot conclude my report without mentioning a few lines about of
members of staff. As reported in all my previous annual reports, I do firmly
believe that the one factor which separates Adarsh with other institutions is the
number and quality of staff we maintain. The result which we produce has a
direct implication on this. We are fortunate that we are having the best among
the peer groups and it's our fortune that we could maintain them. On behalf of
all of you I put on record my sincere thanks to all members of staff of Adarsh.
I put on record my special thanks to Shri K Neelakantan, Chairman Emeritus and
Shri K P Padmakumar, Chairman of Adarsh Charitable Trust for all the support
and guidance. Friends, if we are today where we are, I am sure is only because of
the support you all have been extending to me and to our team. I am sure this
will continue in a more vigorous manner in the coming years also. As noted in
the beginning, I know that this is privilege bestowed on me by the grace of God.
Almighty have been and is very kind to me and I am obeying his order with
folding hands. I realize that I am only an instrument in his hands.
Thank is for all your support and with warm regards,
P R Mahadevan
