Note from the Executive Director
Dear Friends and Supporters of Pax Christi USA,
It is in a spirit of accountability and transparency that I present to you our Annual Report
2016 assembled in collaboration with the national council and staff.
I offer you a transparent picture of the current state of our finances and the challenges that
they present. The numbers speak for themselves. I am pleased to share that once again Pax
Christi USA had more income than expenses in 2016. While I acknowledge that 2016 has
been a productive year, it has also presented us with many competing claims.
You will see in these pages that PCUSA has tried to meet the challenges of a tight fiscal
environment and increasing needs. We have made every effort to make sure the organization
is fiscally healthy: Increasing the number of Sustainers (those who give monthly) to 127. I am
sincerely asking that more of you consider becoming a Sustainer. In doing so this would
moderately increase our revenue to cover our monthly expenses. PCUSA monthly expenses
total $30,000.00. The process to become a Sustainer is quite simple and guarantees the
organization monthly income. Please contact the office to inquire.
Our efforts have increased the number of grants which we have received. Our staff continues
to do amazing work while keeping spending to a bare minimum.
We need to maintain a steady source of revenue, so your continuing financial support is
critical.
You well know that the need for peace with justice in the United States is more critical now
than ever before. Pax Christi USA needs to continue to exercise its prophetic role whenever
the Gospel mandate is compromised and the principles upon which this country is founded
are devalued. All of God’s people deserve nothing less from us.
It is with a grateful heart that I thank you for faithful support and prayers for PCUSA.
With Gratitude and Hope,
Sister Patricia J. Chappell, SNDdeN
Executive Director

Looking Back at 2016:
There are 3 programming movements that characterize this past year: (1) Working
with Parishes in NY, NJ and MD, Religious Congregations in NY and KS, Colleges in MD and
KS, along with a MI State Conference. A common theme was economic and interracial
justice. With the growing polarization in US around issues of religion, race and ethnicity we
were invited to present a day long workshop at these sites in order to assist and support the
participants to think about the social changes that need to be addressed and how to work for
systemic change at the local level.
(2) The second movement was that, while working with Communities of Color during
the 2013-2015, we became aware that training needed to be offered to those who wanted to
continue to address the issues found in their local communities. To that end we received a
grant and offered a 2.5 days training for 40 people from across the US prior to our National
Gathering in August 2016.
(3) The third programming movement was our National Gathering in August 2016 in
Baltimore, MD. The theme was Building the Beloved Community: Addressing the signs of
the times with bold conversations leading to transformative actions. Excellent workshops,
prayer experiences and a public witness in the city of Baltimore were the highlights of our
time together.
Looking Ahead at 2017:
Spirituality of Nonviolence and Peacemaking: Workshops with high school students
on practical implications of living and behaving nonviolently. We will support the Catholic
Nonviolent Initiative of Pax Christi International.
Disarmament, Demilitarization & Reconciliation with Justice: Promoting Pax Christi
International Project on nuclear disarmament/abolition by sending our membership
information on webinars, programs, activities pertaining to this topic.
Economic and Interracial Justice in the US: We have received a grant enabling us to
offer 2 days of ‘Empowerment for the Catholic African American Community’ in KS and RI.
Human Rights & Global Restoration: We will offer ‘Education Days’ for Catholic High
School Students in the DC area on such issues as Immigration and the Environment as well as
an opportunity for them to learn and to do Lobbying at the Capital and at the DC City
Council.
We look forward to continuing our commitment to working with young adults on peace
issues. We also hope to provide Webinars on our various Initiatives throughout the coming
year. 4
