Annual report of Vibha for the period of January 2009 to December 2009

Door Step School at a Glance

All children deserve an education. An alarming number of India’s urban poor

still remain without an opportunity to receive formal education. Door Step School (www.doorstepschool.org), an NGO working in Mumbai and

Pune, has a vision to be an instrumental force that brings development to these children. Our mission at Door Step School is to bring the divide between children to do not have access to schools and the formal education

system, which already exists. We use innovative programmes that facilitate in bringing education to the children and help them make a transition to

literacy and bright future. The concept of Door Step School came into being while working at the social service centers run by Nirmala Niketan College of Social Work at different

municipal corporation schools in Mumbai. Major activities of the center was visiting home of the drop out children, trying to determine the reasons for

their drop out and to bring them back to schools. Factors affecting the inability to attend were varied and could not always be influenced by us. In

spite of wide spread infrastructure of formal education a large number of children remained uncovered by the system. Therefore the need for another supportive method of education was seen and the idea of a school at a

children’s doorstep came into being. To solve the problems of wastage, stagnation and non-enrollment of children in the age group of 3 to 14 years,

Door Step School was established in Mumbai in 1988 and spread to Pune in 1993. Today we cater to more to more than 50,000 children annually.

Our programmes are divided into two main categories:

1. Direct Education Programme - Project Foundation These services are offered to children in slum communities, pavement communities and construction sites, where the classes are set up where the

children are. For children living in pavement communities or at locations where there are no rooms for classes the School on Wheels works as a

mobile classroom. Under Direct Education the following four programmes are conducted-

Non-Formal Education (NFE) – This programme covers non-school

going children in the age group of 6 to 14 years. Study Classes – This programme caters to school going children in the 1st and 2nd standard.

Balwadi –This programme is for preschoolers in the age group of 3 to 5 years.

School on Wheels - These are buses that serve as mobile classrooms to enable us to reach difficult areas or to collect children from smaller sites to

one location.

We also have other Supporting Activities under our Direct Education Programme. The following three programmes are conducted-

Crèche – This programme caters to children in the age group of 0 to 3 years.

School Transportation - -It is an added service provided for bring children to municipal schools as well as collecting them from different construction sites to one location for conducting classes.

The Project Foundation also assists in age certificate, school enrollment and external examination. Currently Door Step School has its Direct Education Programme at 80

construction sites in Pune.

2. School Intervention Programme – Project Grow With Books. Under this programme we work with students of Municipal Schools and run a

programme of 90 minutes per school per week. The main goal of this programme is to enhance reading abilities of the children and to inculcate reading habits in them. Currently Door Step School has its School

Intervention Programme in 131 schools In Pune and Pimpri Chichwad area. Door Step School also has Community Learning Centers in Pune where

programmes such as computer classes, science laboratories and reference laboratories are conducted.

Case Studies

Progress of the students was measured using records of their regular classroom work. External teachers made evaluation of this work twice in a

year. The students’ level report has already been included in the previous section. Our observation is that children get into the habit of going to school, thus increasing their thirst for knowledge. With determination and

perseverance many of our kids have excelled in their respective examinations. And they have continued their education in spite of moving to

another location. We can elaborate on this with a few case studies.

We were able to track the following students –

Case Study 1

Atul Shinde and Atish Shinde of Mont Vert 1 were shifted to Baramati. The

concerned coordinators helped their parents to enroll both of their kids in a Baramati school. Now both of them are attending school regularly.

Case Study 2

Nikita Mundey of Hattikhana was studying in 1st standard when she was

shifted to Chikhali. The concerned coordinator kept track of her and helped her get admission in a Chikhali School.

Case Study 3

Pappu Yadav of Hattikhana who was studying in the 3rd standard when he was shifted to Ghodegaon. The concerned coordinator posted his school-

leaving certificate to his parents on their Ghodegaon address. However the certificate never reached his parents. His parents informed the builder that they did not receive his school-leaving certificate. On the builders request the

coordinator requested the school headmaster for a duplicate certificate. The head master was very understanding and he issued a duplicate certificate

without any problems. The builder was very helpful and he hand delivered the duplicate certificate to Pappu’s parents. Pappu could join the school in

Ghodegaon. Thus, with the cooperation of everyone Pappu got admission in a Ghodegaon school. .

Case Study 4

Nisha and Bobby Tambe were shifted to a Swargate site from Alankapuri site in November 2008. They contacted the concerned coordinator and gave her

their new address. Then the coordinator visited the family and helped their parents to enroll the children in a nearby school.

Case Study 5

Rakhi and Jyoti of Mont Vert-2 shifted to Balewadi just before their external examination was scheduled. The concerned supervisor brought them back to

appear for the examination for the 3rd standard and both of them passed the examination.

In June 2009 they were enrolled in the 4th Standard. Then they shifted to their native place in Chattisghad. The concerned Coordinator contacted their parents and took their address and sent their age certificate and mark list to

that address. Using these documents the parents were able to enroll the girls in a school at Chattisghad.

Outstanding Students

Case Study 1

Monish is an outstanding example of a child who wants to study in spite of all

the adversities in his life. He is with us for nearly three years now. Since the time he joined our NFE classes at Kapil Malhar site he works in a hotel almost

full time, however, in his free time he would come and attend the classes but unfortunately at the time of annual examinations his family would routinely go back to their native place. Thus he missed the examination and could not

be enrolled in school either. He did not give up his efforts though and learnt to read and write and do

simple calculations etc. It showed in his work and his employer was impressed by his performance at work and enquired where he learnt to read, write and calculate. When he came to know about Door Step School he

helped the boy with books etc. and also adjusted his timings so that he can attend regular school.

We enrolled him in the 1st Standard. But as luck would have it his parents shifted to another location soon after. But Monish did not give up. He chose

to stay back with his friend’s family and continue in school. The school teachers are impressed by his progress and are planning to make him appear for the 2nd or 3rd Std. exams (instead of the 1st, in which he is studying

currently) and make up partially for the years he has lost in the struggle for life.

Sairam of Mont Vert 2 studied in NFE and passed the 4th std. examination externally. He is currently studying in 6th Std. and attends our reference

library. Recently his parents shifted to another site at Balewadi. Sairam commutes on bicycle and attends school and reference library regular. In

vacations he does small jobs and earns enough for his school supplies.

Case Study 3

Maheshwari of Shubhashri Woods studies in the 2nd standard at a School in

Pimple Saudagar. She is very intelligent and helps her classmates to understand the lessons learnt in the class. She is particularly good in teaching mathematics. Her teacher is very pleased with her helpful nature

and dedication.

Case Study 4

Mahananda of Hattikhana, studies in the 2nd standard at Swami Vivekananda School. She got the 1st prize in a handwriting competition at school.

Some failures

Renavva Shidole of Mont Vert 1 was married when she joined us. (She got

married at the age of 7. Now she is 12). She appeared and passed the 1st standard examination externally. Then the concerned coordinator enrolled her in the 2nd Standard. However, she dropped out of school due to some

family problems. We are in touch with her and are trying to get her back so that at least she will attend our NFE classes.

Volunteers

Ameya from Spain did volunteer work at Samrajya and Kanchan Vastu. She

did various activities with children like body shape, mathematics games, colors, statistics etc.

Other Activities

Parents’ meetings on all sites were organized to explain the importance of education and school enrollment. Some motivated parents came forward and

enrolled their children in school. We assured them our support at every stage of school enrollment. Coordinators showed them note books and charts made

by children. They were happy to see progress of their children. Picnics

573 students from all of our Vibha centers enjoyed the picnic. This picnic was organized center wise. The picnic venues were Konark Park, Pimple Gurav

Garden and Katraj Snake Park.

Note: From Samrajya, Kanchan Vastu, Forestrail and Madhupushpa: all of the children go to school by
