Message from the President of the Board

For those commitments, whether you give five hours or five dollars, we say, "thank you!"

Each year, we take time to publicly thank those who contribute time or money to ACS. In our ACS community, so many of our contributors do both. We each do this because our names on the pages represent a tremendous commitment to each and every one of our students, a commitment that can actualize every aspect of an ACS education supporting our faculty and staff, our current field trips, our athletics teams, and our school-wide campus initiatives.

For those commitments, whether you give five hours or five dollars, we say, "thank you!"

If it is not yet obvious from the sheer quantity of names contained in this report, we have a tremendous number of people to thank. I looked back at the many years of this publication, it has grown steadily over the years, a wonderful trend that speaks of increasing involvement.

As Dr. Damon ends his tenure as headmaster, I can state quite confidently that, even greater than the abundant commitment of individuals in the ACS community, is the impact that each of you has, and will continue to have, on the lives of our students.

Thank you,

Nina Joukowsky Köprülü '79PresidentBoard of Trustees

Message from the Headmaster

Your donations open doors to

bright students who could not

otherwise afford ACS.

Dear Alumni, Parents and Friends of ACS:

In this, my ninth year as Headmaster, I celebrate with you the success of the Annual Giving Fund and its expanded importance to the education of every student at ACS. We are continually working to sustain a challenging educational experience on an aging campus but with highly dedicated educators who come to ACS because of your children and the opportunities to be creative, committed professionals.

Your donations open doors to bright students who could not otherwise afford ACS. Your donations help us to renovate parts of the campus each year so that even as we plan for new buildings for the future, today's student experience continues to take place in a stronger learning environment for all ages. Your donations help us to hire and retain superior teaching teams. Your understanding of our mission, values, and vision for the future, and your willingness to help us reach our continual growth plans show what a difference you make. I thank you.

This fall the school opened with the largest starting enrollment in its history – 1076 students – thanks to the reputation that you have helped the school create. Last summer's capital projects reflect our commitment to making the daily experience of the students easier and more pleasant with the completion of the elementary elevator, the renovation of the elementary bathrooms and fire stairs, and the enclosure of the Upper School outdoor basketball court. Many smaller projects affect different aspects of the students' lives, from the arrival and departure gates to the middle school lockers. Our technology infrastructure expands so that this tool becomes accessible to support increased and increasingly innovative practices by the teachers and students.

Annual giving is a critical component in the school's ability to face the challenges of a continually evolving educational experience for the ACS student. Your generous understanding and appreciation of the education which ACS strives to provide for every student makes a difference.

Thank you, parents, alumni and friends of ACS.

George H. Damon, Jr.Headmaster

ACS Mission Statement

The American Community School at Beirut offers research-based and classroom proven educational practices through an American educational philosophy. The program instills in students the highest academic and ethical standards, preparing them for the successful pursuit of higher education and for responsible effective global citizenship.

Founded in 1905, ACS is an independent, non-profit, non-sectarian, pre-K-12 coeducational day school. It draws students from both the Lebanese and international communities in Lebanon and embraces diversity in race, gender, religion, national origin and economic background. ACS is accredited in the United States and licensed in Lebanon. It offers a rich and balanced curriculum in both the liberal arts and the sciences. Athletics, the visual and performing arts, extra-curricular activities and community service are integral components of an ACS education. In the high school, ACS provides a rigorous college preparatory course of study including the Lebanese and International Baccalaureate Programs. While the language of instruction is English, Arabic is taught at all levels.

ACS encourages students to be open-minded and respectful of the social, political and religious diversity of its community. As it enters its second century, ACS reaffirms its commitment to developing a lifelong engagement in learning as well as the leadership qualities and personal integrity needed to contribute positively in an increasingly complex global society.

Why does ACS have an Annual Fund?

The Annual Fund is an annual fundraising campaign which provides

important, unrestricted support of ACS. The Annual Fund is vital

to bridging the gap between tuition income and the actual cost

of an ACS education. Each year, gifts are received from trustees,

alumni, parents, parents of alumni, grandparents, corporations and

foundations and friends of the school.

Cost of Educating a Child 2011-2012

In 2011-2012, tuition only covered 82% of our school’s annual

operating budget. A shortfall of 18% is about $2,627 per student.

For 1,077 students, the total shortfall comes to a total of around

$2,828,968. To sustain the school’s commitment to each student,

this amount must be obtained from monetary gifts to the school.

We are grateful for your generous donations!

ACS Annual Fund

What does the Annual Fund support?

The Annual Fund enables ACS to offer a dynamic, rigorous and

student-centered curriculum; focus on values, leadership and

character; compete successfully in athletics; offer a wide array

of creative arts and programs; and attract a talented and diverse

student body that enriches the entire community. It is critical to

ACS's day-to-day operations and financial health because it is used

to support these key components of the educational experience:

• Academic Programs• Visual and Performing Arts• Co-Curricular Activities• Student Services• Athletics• College Counseling• Faculty Professional Development• Technology, and more

American Community School at Beirut is a 501 (c) (3) charitable institution. Our tax ID number is 13-1929591. Your gift is tax deductible to the full extent provided by law.

I LOVE ACS!For as long

as I could

remember, ACS has been my

life. Ever since I was only 3

years old, this school has

been shaping and molding me

into the man I am today.

..While I may be leaving the

school, I still know that the

relationships I have made in it

and the characteristics I have

developed will always be part

of me.Abdul Rahman Kreidieh '12

I would like to thank … all of my teachers for their knowledge and assistance in spending as much time as possible to help their students learn and understand. Shon Shaji '12

Basically, I need to end this by thanking ACS for all that it has done for me. I will end this tribute

with saying I once heard, “Moving

on is simple. It's what we have left behind that's hard”.Jad Essayli '12

ACS is like my second home, my whole childhood is engraved in its walls, the way I grow up to be is because of its environment and community. Rami Saab '12
