First link with the CollegeThe College has always been important to me, probably because it initially shaped my career and, as such, all that I have become. My first contact was over 40 years ago as an apprentice studying for an OND in Engineering.

Current SituationThe College is an integral part of my life as I now come into my tenth year as a governor and my third as Chair. I am a big believer in putting something back into life, and I have enjoyed the opportunity over the last 9 years to put a lot back into this College and FE.

Personal BackgroundI am a “steel man and boy”. I was born in Scunthorpe and have worked in the steel industry all my life, at British Steel and Caparo. I was, until the end of 2009, the Managing Director at Caparo Merchant Bar and have now moved to take a Caparo Steel Products Group role responsible for Energy Efficiency. I have an Honours degree in Mechanical

Engineering, a Masters degree in Human Resources Management, and a Diploma in Management Studies. I am a chartered engineer and Fellow of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, a Member of the IoM3 and a Fellow of the Chartered Management Institution.

I have been associated with education and skills for over 10 years and have been Vice Chair of Metskill (the Steel Industry Strategic Skills Body) and a member of the Humberside Learning & Skills Council. At present I am Chair of the EEF Yorkshire and Humberside Regional Council, and a member of the Special Metals Forum Education & Skills Committee at Namtech in Sheffield.

Highlights of being a GovernorFor me, being a Governor of this College over the last 9 years, has been a real delight. It has been a pleasure to see how the College has developed over the years, both its facilities and curriculum. To have played a part in this and to be able to continue to play a part in its future is a real privilege.

Personal MessageI am fiercely proud of this College, its governors, its staff and its students and I use every opportunity I can to broadcast its success and abilities.

It is an honour to be elected Chair of the Corporation of this College and I look forward to the success that I know its students and staff will have in the future.

International SuccessDuring academic year 2008/09 the College continued to forge ahead with its international strategy presenting five papers at the World’s largest conference for FE. Held in Phoenix, Arizona the 89th Annual American Association of Community Colleges Convention attracted over 2,500 delegates from Colleges across the United States and a further 500 education professionals from Colleges throughout the world.

Presenting at the conference was a great honour for both the College and the UK education sector as a whole, allowing best practice developed in the UK to be disseminated to a worldwide audience and verifying North Lindsey’s position as a world-class institution.

08/09 also saw the launch of the ‘Trans-Atlantic Project’. Developed by North Lindsey College this is thought to be the first project of its kind to be run in the UK. The project saw eight pupils from two Scunthorpe schools working alongside students from over 9,000 kilometres away to solve one of the greatest threats of our time – global climate change. The four groups of pupils each competed to win a reciprocal exchange and the project has resulted in interest from a number of local schools who are keen to participate in future competitions.

Further international activity saw curriculum exchanges for childcare, health and social care and business to Nebraska and California. The College has now completed four international exchanges giving an increasing number of learners the opportunity of a lifetime. It is the College’s intention to continue sending out learners from across all curriculum areas to learn more about their chosen future careers across the globe. 08/09 also saw the return visit of six motor vehicle students from Mid Plains Community College, Nebraska to Scunthorpe.

Local backing for Engineering ProvisionThe spotlight was turned to engineering as North Lindsey College launched ‘Etec’ and took another step on its path to being at the forefront of driving the skills agenda for North Lincolnshire.

Representatives from many employers, industry, education, local MP’s and the Mayor of Scunthorpe attended the event to tour the industry standard facilities, see learners at work and be a part of the exciting new developments at the College. Delivering excellence in engineering, the Etec Centre bridges the gap between vocational skills and degree level courses, equipping learners of today with the skills required to become the engineering and technology professionals of the future.

Working in conjunction with local industry the College has developed a comprehensive portfolio of courses designed specifically to meet employers’ skills needs.

Guest speaker for the launch was Claire Barnsley, HR Manager for MultiServ, one of the world’s largest players in the global steel and metal industries. MultiServ started working in partnership with the College earlier in the year to devise a solution to their long-term staffing requirements.

State of the Art Learning ResourceNorth Lindsey College continued to show its commitment to driving forward the economic growth of North Lincolnshire with the official opening of a state-of-the art £2.3 million learning resource.

The recently transformed former electronics building located on Kingsway now houses an extensive construction provision with large brick workshop, carpentry and joinery workshops for site, machine and bench, plumbing workshops, gas testing stations and dedicated construction classrooms and computer suite.

In addition, the front of Global House was also converted to accommodate the College’s growing higher education provision which is set to have grown by 30% between 2007 and 2010.

During 2008/09 the College saw continued investment by extending and developing various departments around the campus, enhancing enjoyable learning experiences.

The transformation means the College now boasts some of the best construction facilities of any College in the country, ensuring local learners gain the skills required by industry employers. The additional HE facilities also take the College a step closer to its mission of enabling local people to work towards a degree without having to leave the area and get themselves into significant levels of debt, whilst also benefiting the North Lincolnshire economy.

The Spa at ImagesNorth Lindsey College officially opened ‘The Spa at Images’, the latest in a long line of developments. After months of transformations the £65,000 investment into the College’s beauty therapy area is now providing spa and holistic therapy treatments to the general public as well as enhancing students’ learning and progression. Increased demand in the industry and the new centre has enabled the College to offer a brand new Level 3 Spa Course. This course involves training using the sauna, steam room and Jacuzzi as well as learning techniques such as body massage, body wrapping and Indian head massage. The ‘Spa at Images’ boasts an extensive treatment list including the use of the exciting new floatation bed, holistic therapy treatments, body wraps and spa treatments.

In addition to the already extensive beauty therapy salons, ‘The Spa at Images’ now offers another treatment room, classroom, spa room and changing area to enlarge the training facilities available for the benefit of learners and clients. The College now utilises six fully working beauty therapy treatment rooms and continues to drive forward the success of its learners. Two ex-students, Helen Argent and Clare Boothby, from ‘Time for You Beauty and Holistic Therapy’ in Brigg cut the ribbon, officially opening the new centre. After studying at North Lindsey College and completing their courses they met whilst working locally in the industry before deciding to set up a salon for themselves in Brigg. The salon has been open for almost three years and the relationship with the College has continued, with them taking on a level 3 apprentice who has progressed and is now fully employed by the salon.

Putting people firstNorth Lindsey College proved that people really are its most important resource with the publication of its latest Investors in People Review Report.

Previously reviewed in November 2005, the College has invested considerable resources into developing its people in order to retain the prestigious Investors in People (IiP) Standard.

Developed in 1990, the IiP Standard provides a national framework for the training and development of staff, aimed at advancing the performance of the organisation through its people.

Within the report some of the College’s key strengths were highlighted as, the empowerment of employees, the strong team-working ethos and the commitment to staff’s learning and development within the College. In addition, the College was said to demonstrate best practice in its leadership and management approaches and the way in which it rewards and recognises employees and their contribution to the organisation.

With over 600 employees North Lindsey College is one of the areas biggest employers and is proud of its reputation as an ‘employer of choice’ within North Lincolnshire.In total, ten areas of good practice were identified within the report including, extensive partnerships with other Colleges around the world, the positive culture which embraces the learning needs of all staff, strong and effective planning processes and very good leadership throughout.

The College celebrated fantastic achievements during 2008/09, being nominated for and receiving a number of awards right across the campus, showing true dedication and commitment from the College and its employees.

Rewarding EnterpriseNorth Lindsey College manager scooped an accolade at the 2009 Regional Young Enterprise Yorkshire & Humber Awards held at Leeds United Football Club on June 18.

The regional awards are held to recognise the hard work of students, staff and volunteers involved in the Young Enterprise (YE) programme. Over 200 people travelled from all over the region to gather for the awards with Shaun Harvey, Chief Executive of Leeds United FC, opening the evening by sharing his early business experiences.

Barbara Cullen nominated a learner to receive an award but was later surprised as she was presented with one of only three Gold Awards to be awarded for the whole of the Yorkshire and Humber region. These awards are given by Young Enterprise to volunteers who have committed significant time and energy in support of the organisation. In many cases their contribution has been classed as being outstanding. Barbara has been

with the College for seven years but has been involved with Young Enterprise for more than 15 years.

Her role with YE at the College is as link teacher for the Team Programme which sees students with a range of learning support requirements set up and run their own companies.

The Young Enterprise mission is to inspire and equip young people to learn and succeed through enterprise and each year learners from across the country continue to benefit from the programme.

Kingsway Children’s Centre Wins AgainKingsway Children’s Centre wins ‘Nursery of the Year 2009’ award for the third time!

Staff, parents and children were proud to see the nursery based at North Lindsey College receive another award at the Annual Childcare Awards. Organised by North Lincolnshire Council and sponsored by Huggies, the ceremony is in celebration of the work and achievements of childcare providers in North Lincolnshire.

Mandy Lawrence (Kingsway Children’s Centre Manager) commented, “I am speechless, but really pleased. All the staff work really hard and it is a tribute to them that we have been short-listed every year since the awards started.”

Now in its sixth year, Sandra Simmonds (Head of Community Services for Younger Children) commented, “The evening celebrates the high quality services our early year’s provisions provide for all children across North Lincolnshire.”

The evening held in Scunthorpe saw the presentation of seven trophies to various childcare establishments across North Lincolnshire.

College Staff Reap RewardsThe achievements of two staff from North Lindsey College were recognised at a North Lincolnshire Council awards ceremony for people who have made an outstanding contribution to their community.

The Leisure and Culture Awards for 2009 were staged at Ancholme Leisure Centre with a full night of celebrations and acknowledgement of the contributions made by local people.

Alan Rayment, Fitness Suite Duty Officer at North Lindsey College, was nominated for his hard work and efforts by Paul Cavill from Lincsquad. Alan scooped the award for ‘Top Disabled Sports Achiever 2009’ at the glittering ceremony and was presented with his award by guest speaker and Scunthorpe United Manager, Nigel Adkins.

Alan was nominated for his efforts when he cycled the marathon trek from Lands End to John O’Groats. The mammoth journey lasted 17 days and raised over £3,500 for his favoured charity.

on first place for ‘Sports Coach of the Year Award’ but was pleased with the recognition of the hard work and dedication she puts in with the College students. Kate was nominated by her Head of School at North Lindsey College and was delighted with the support and encouragement she had received from her senior staff members.

The Guild of Bricklayers finds a new President in ScunthorpeThe construction industry in Scunthorpe was given a boost with the new president of the Guild of Bricklayers residing in North Lincolnshire.

Julian Walden (North Lindsey College, Curriculum Area Manager for Construction) was sworn in as President of the Guild of Bricklayers at the Annual General Meeting.

After dedicating nearly thirty years to the Construction industry, Julian started his career in 1979 when he came to North Lindsey College as a school leaver to embark on the link course. Julian progressed in the profession and gained an apprenticeship in 1981 with

Babcock-Woodall-Duckham. Julian continued to advance his career returning to the College and taking on the role of curriculum manager for construction where he shares his skills and vocational knowledge with staff and students whilst also grasping his new responsibility as President for the Guild of Bricklayers.

Julian was presented with Presidency of the Guild at the Annual General meeting held at the Kingsway Centre in Scunthorpe. The prestigious role will require Julian to open the next national conference, to represent the Guild of Bricklayers nationally at meetings and social functions, to present prizes at competitions, to be chair of the trustees of the charity and to chair all meetings held by the Guild this year.

Founded in 1932, the Guild of Bricklayers aims to promote and maintain the highest standards of craftsmanship in brickwork. Through the hosting of an annual conference, practising bricklayers are encouraged to attend to be brought up to date with developments within the industry impacting upon the education of our future generation of bricklayers.

Ensuring the customer is kingNorth Lindsey College confirms its reputation for outstanding customer service by becoming only the second College in the region, and one of only a handful of Colleges nationally, to be awarded the prestigious Customer Service Excellence Award (CSEA).

Launched in March 2008 by the Minister for Transformational Government, Tom Watson, the new Customer Service Excellence (CSE) standard was developed to provide a practical tool to drive forward public services that are more responsive to people’s needs.

The standard replaces the old Charter Mark which the College had previously held for many years but has been made more challenging through the inclusion of key indicators such as culture and ethos and a strong customer focus.

As part of the rigorous assessment process staff throughout the College had to demonstrate their compliance against strict criteria in each of the following areas: customer insight; the culture of the organisation; information and access; delivery; and the timeliness and quality of the service provided.

The cabinet office states that the overarching aim of the CSEA is to encourage, enable and reward organisations that are delivering services based on a genuine understanding of the needs and preferences of their customers and communities. Widely regarded as a measure of outstanding customer service, the awarding of the standard not only reflects the College’s overall commitment to meeting the criteria but is also an acknowledgement of the effort of everyone who works at North Lindsey College.

College staff, external partners and a cross-section of learners were involved throughout the assessment to gauge the views and opinions of North Lindsey College’s customers. Findings highlighted that learners at the College benefit from excellent overall service levels that include the delivery of impartial information, advice and guidance, access to a wide range of information about EMAs, bus services, financial support, counselling and much, much more.

In addition, within the College, all learners are supported by Student Advisers – offering tutorials on a wide range of topics relevant to their age group.

The College is thrilled to have been granted this prestigious award.

Star Award NomineesTwo staff from North Lindsey College were among 100 ‘shining stars’ from Further Education Colleges across England to be invited, along with their guests, to attend the glittering annual Learning and Skills Improvement Service (LSIS) STAR Awards ceremony. The event held at Old Billingsgate in London on Monday 24th November saw more than 500 people including TV celebrities and learners celebrate the outstanding work of the further education sector.

Now in their fifth year, the awards are designed to recognise the hard work and dedication of the ‘unsung heroes’ in education. Recognising people who make an outstanding contribution to the quality of learning that millions of people in England receive on a daily basis.

The College submitted nominations in two out of the ten STAR Award categories: David Simons in the category of ‘Support Role’, and Nigel Longstaff, nominated in the category of ‘Response to Learners’ Needs’. Having two members staff reach the national finals from of more than 2,500 nominations for the second year running represented a huge achievement for the College.

The evening was a magical spectacle of performance and celebration with a wonderful winter wonderland theme. Hosted by BBC broadcaster Mike Baker, guests were entertained by students from Reynolds Performing Arts College who showcased a mixed group Latin dance performance after winning an X Factor-style competition to perform at the awards. During the five-course dinner nominees

were invited up onto the stage and presented with their STAR Awards trophy by Dr Floella Benjamin OBE. Best known to a generation as the former BBC Playschool presenter, Floella is also an acclaimed author, actress and political campaigner.

We have developed excellent relationships and partnerships with local and UK wide employers to upskill their workforces through structured NVQ programmes that are helping large numbers of individuals to improve their work performance and employability and their employers to be more efficient and effective. We have responded quickly and decisively to the need to improve Skills for Life uptake, and are partnering with many employers to develop the literacy and numeracy of their employees. These initiatives are helping to raise individual self esteem, aspiration and personal effectiveness, positively impacting on business effectiveness and competitiveness through improved skills and performance in the workplace.

The College works very closely with a number of partners to develop effective and valued networks bringing employers, individuals, funders and various agencies together as appropriate to share, improve and encourage good practice in a number of areas. These include :

Kingsway Business Learning CommunityA networking group of local business leaders has been established to regularly meet to explore management and business models of practice, with events led in turn by employers, guest speakers from the University of Hull and others.

Kingsway HR & Training ForumHR and Training specialists from local businesses meet on a regular basis to discuss employment and people management issues, with the added value of ACAS being represented in the group.

Greater Economic Success GroupWorking in partnership with the Local Authority’s Economic Development Team and North Lincolnshire employers, this group continues to meet to focus on the economic prosperity and sustainability of North Lincolnshire.

The quality of the relationship between the College and employers was validated through the Training Quality Standard Accreditation in April 2009.

Community & Employer Partnerships

Working in partnership with employers and the community is very important to the College. We listen to local views in order to respond to their needs and contribute along with our partners to the development of a sound skills base for North Lincolnshire.

Quality & Support for Learners

Three surveys were carried out in 2008/09; a Teaching and Learning Survey, Parental Perception of the College and an Employer/Sponsor Evaluation. Most outcomes were very positive and any negative comments were taken forward through an action plan. Comments from all surveys are reflected in the College Self Assessment Report.

The Teaching and Learning Survey assessed to what extent the College was meeting its commitment to learners and included some questions to allow benchmarking to take place with the LSC National Survey. The Survey was distributed to learners studying via all the various modes of attendance eg: Full-time, Part-time, Work Based Learning and Train to Gain.

The Parental Perception Survey resulted in very positive feedback. The Employer Evaluation Survey was structured to gain feedback with regard to Customer Service,

Course Evaluation and Course Training. Positive feedback was also gained from this survey. Feedback and positive comments made in the surveys, along with action taken, was distributed to employers and parents via the College Newsletter. Feedback was also displayed throughout College and on the College website.

(The Matrix Standard is awarded and assessed by The Guidance Accreditation Board (GAB).)

Retention OfficersThe Colleges team of Retention Officers work with academic and pastoral staff to address issues of learners non or poor attendance. The team liaise with learners directly to support their return to study - linking with college staff and external agencies to see what support can be put in place to ensure success on their programme.

During 2008/09, 579 full-time learners were supported by the team; of that number, 69% were helped and stayed on their programme. in addition, 109 part-time learners were supported, 67% of them remaining on their programme.

The team are clearly an asset in assisting learners continue their studies and ensuring the College’s retention figures grow year on year.

The Counselling ServiceA team of three qualified Counsellors, offers learners a sense of belonging in a large establishment and offers support if any problems arise. The counsellors provide a comprehensive service and act as a link with outside agencies who may also be able to assist. Both learners and staff are supported by this very busy team.

Guidance ServicesProvided in the College by Connexions Advisers and the Colleges own team of qualified and experienced careers Guidance Officers.

We consider a key element of our learners’ success is the continued information, advice, guidance and support, given by staff to our learners throughout their studies.

Quality & Support for Learners cont...

The service provides information, guidance and advice on matters such as job search techniques, career choices, training opportunities and applications for further and higher education. The Colleges Guidance Team provide over one thousand one-to-one careers interviews with year 11 pupils in the local schools during the autumn term, helping them make the right choices when they leave school in addition to supporting current learners in College.

EnrichmentAn integral part of every full-time learner’s week, comprising and academic and pastoral tutorial and usually another activity to introduce breadth to the programme of study. Learners have flexible opportunities to study additional subjects and participate in sporting, social or other useful activities such as:

Student AdvisersSupporting learners through individual reviews, group activities and events on a range of pastoral issues throughout the year. They are linked to full time programmes, but are available to all learners. Student Advisers were very pro-active in assisting learners with UCAS (University applications) with a significant number of applications made by level 3 learners to Universities and other Higher Education Institution.

Kingsway Children’s CentreThe only setting in the region to hold Investors in Children status. This has been maintained for five years and was achieved through a rigorous quality assurance scheme called “Steps to Quality” which was fully reassessed in June 2008.Quotes identifying particular strengths include:

“Quality improvement is central to all activity within the setting”

“A culture of information sharing is embedded within the setting”

“There is evidence of how the children influence the service provision”

A successful CPD (Continuing Professional Development) programme has resulted in staff achieving qualifications ranging from level 3 to level 5 and working towards Early Years Professional Status. Staff have a firm commitment to continuous professional development and improving outcomes for children and families. There are currently 9 staff completing the Foundation Degree in Early Years and 3 completed within the setting.

Kingsway Children’s Centre was awarded the “Nursery of the Year” at the local Child Care Awards in July 2009. This is the 6th year of being nominated by the parents and the 3rd time of winning.

Kingsway Children’s Centre continues to set the standard and benchmark for other settings to achieve.

The future of Teaching and Learning has been defined in the Strategic Plan 2007-2010. In this document, approved in 2007, we have assimilated a Teaching and Learning Strategy, which articulates the aim to be recognised as a centre of excellence in Teaching and Learning, raising learner aspirations and developing the vocational and lifelong learning skills of our learners.

The College is making a substantial investment in its staff through the training opportunities available, to ensure they have the appropriate skills required in an ever-changing and challenging environment.

The Staff Development Unit has played a key role in improving teaching and learning across the College. It enables all new teaching staff without teacher training, to

achieve professional qualifications and it supports staff across College via mentoring and the work of Advanced Practitioners. It also offers established staff a wide range of development opportunities to maintain and share best practice in Teaching and Learning.

Whilst the Ofsted inspection in March 2007 commented on the good and improving teaching within the College, 2007/8 & 2008/9 saw continuing further improvements in teaching standards across the College.

Continuing Professional Development this year has focused on training to enhance the quality of teaching and learning, assessor and verifier up-grades and teaching qualifications. A comprehensive range of Toolkit sessions have been held with over 170 sessions being

delivered, attracting staff from all areas of the College. The Toolkit programme is designed to meet the needs of teachers and celebrate and disseminate best practice across the College. Difficulties still persist when trying to replace staff in specialist areas and it has been necessary to appoint staff who do not hold teacher qualifications. New staff therefore complete the required teaching qualifications before being responsible for any learners and then work towards a further qualification within a defined period.

2008/09 saw a continued improvement in success rates - an increase of 8% on 2007/08 (to 79%) resulting in an overall improvement of 25% across the last 5 years. Additionally, the self-assessment process saw a significant improvement across Teaching & Learning with 14 out of 17 areas (82%) now graded good or outstanding. This puts the College in an excellent position to achieve its strategic aim of being graded overall outstanding by December 2010.

Teaching and learning has continued to make a positive contribution to local and regional development by sustaining delivery models for a curriculum that is flexible and responsive to learner and employer needs. There have been further curriculum reviews over this last year, to ensure our curriculum offer is appropriate to stakeholder need and is fit for purpose.

Major investment in ICT continued in 2008/09, both in expansion of equipment and facilities available to learners and in systems available to staff to manage the College.

Over 480 computers and associated equipment (printers etc.) were purchased – some to replace ageing equipment and others to expand facilities – the net result has been an increase to over 1560 computers in service. This number includes 170 netbooks which, in conjunction with the campus wide wireless network installed during the year, give great flexibility to how and where IT is used.

Seventeen interactive whiteboard and digital projector sets were installed, giving over 95% coverage of all suitable rooms and a total number of sets installed of 108.

The 15 year old telephone switch was replaced with a more efficient up-to-date system which offers additional facilities as they are required.

A new exams system was implemented and has proven a successful tool in reducing paperwork and streamlining the examination registration, entry and result collation process.

Changes to systems to accommodate the major change in funding methodology which occurred in 2008/09 have been successfully carried out with no interruption to the flow of management information throughout the year. Associated with this, a system for logging all enrichment activity was developed to ensure full credit for engagement in such activity went to learners and the College could evidence new funding requirements.

During 2008-09 we have continued to invest in the infrastructure of the College. Through our planned maintenance programme we have undertaken a number of significant enhancements to our resources for learners and staff. The investment to improve North Lindsey College will continue into 2009-10.

Celebrating Learner Success

Local Student Wins National Beauty Competition!North Lindsey College student Eve Marshall has a beautiful future ahead of her after being awarded the sought after title, ‘Sterex Student of the Year 2009’.

Now in its twentieth year, North Lindsey College has a long history of involvement with the competition having hosted the regional finals on several occasions due to the high quality of its on-site beauty therapy salons, only once before, though has a student from the College brought home the winner’s trophy.

Recognised throughout the industry as the experts in hair removal, the Sterex electrolysis competition is a national competition open to all beauty therapists studying at College or on apprenticeships within the UK.

This year’s winner, twenty year old Eve Marshall, has been studying Beauty Therapy at the College for two years and has most recently completed the NVQ Level 3 in Beauty Therapy. Eve was thrilled when she was selected to be entered for the competition and went on to compete against 100’s of entrants from Colleges across the UK.

The final assessment was judged by last year’s Sterex 2008 winner and Elaine Stoddart, Sterex Director of Training who announced North Lindsey College learner Eve Marshall as the winner. For winning the competition, Eve was presented with a trophy, £1,000 cash and the prestigious title of ‘Sterex Student of the Year 2009’.

Veterinary VacationAn aspiring student vet guarantees an interview at a top London University after spending a week at an acclaimed veterinary school.

Working with animals is the dream of twenty year old North Lindsey College Animal Management learner Tanya Taylor, and her dreams certainly came true when she scooped a week long placement at the Royal Veterinary College, University of London.

The Royal Veterinary College has a long history of running Summer and Easter schools which offer a limited number of places to further education students from across the country who are interested in pursuing a career working with animals giving them first hand experience of University life.

Tanya set her sights high at the College enrolling as a mature student after relocating. Proving her commitment and dedication to a career with animals, Tanya now automatically secures herself an interview for a place at the Royal Veterinary College, University of London upon completing her College course next year.

Along with the 13 other lucky further education students, spent an action packed week at the College where they were treated as first year degree students. The students got to stay in the university halls and mix with future animal specialists.

Tanya also had the opportunity to join in on lectures, visit the Students’ Union, learn about veterinary surgery skills, visit a working farm to learn about livestock, nutrition, vaccinations and much, much more. After visiting the Grant Museum of Zoology and Comparative Anatomy during the week, Tanya came to the conclusion that Bioveterinary Sciences is the career path for her.

Tanya’s next adventure on her route to a promising career working with animals includes work experience that she has secured for herself including a placement at the Deep, a placement at Snowdonia Zoo and a work placement with a shark conservation organization in South Africa indulging her love of sea life.

Students Rewarded for University Aims!An evening of celebrations was enjoyed by students leaving North Lindsey College to better their education and career prospects by heading to University.

Aimhigher, in conjunction with the College, organised a special celebration dinner with prizes and gift vouchers presented for those who had shown continued commitment and recognition for overcoming difficulties in order to complete their course. Record numbers applied to University this year and to celebrate their achievements they were rewarded in style at a special awards dinner. 112 learners in total enjoyed the celebratory evening from across all curriculum areas.

Several learners have decided to stay at the Kingsway campus to study for their degree at the University Centre on site. University applications from the College have risen year on year and those

who are progressing to Higher Education will receive continued support from Aimhigher.

The celebratory dinner was followed by the welcome of special guest Mary Wright (Chair of Aimhigher Humber) who praised all the learners for the hard work they had put into their courses at North Lindsey College and emphasised the positive reasons for choosing Higher Education and the advantages a degree could offer them in the fast changing world of employment.

Ann Taylor (Aimhigher Co-ordinator at North Lindsey College) commented, “The role of Aimhigher is to raise aspirations and motivation to enter HE among young people from under-represented groups, in line with the Government’s target that by the year 2010, 50% of those aged between 18 and 30 should have the opportunity to benefit from HE. It is important that people’s awareness is raised and that they understand the different progression

routes into HE via vocational courses like Btec National Diplomas, and NVQs – so that prospective students understand that A-levels are not the only option.”

As a nationally recognised programme, Aimhigher aims to widen participation in higher education by raising the aspirations and developing the abilities of young people from under-represented communities. Many of these learners are people from lower socio-economic groups and disadvantaged backgrounds. Aimhigher partnerships help to build relationships which break down the barriers which institutions and systems can unwittingly create for learners.

Most of the attendees are the first in their families to continue their studies into Higher Education and progress onto University.

Rewarding Enterprise!North Lindsey College learner scooped an accolade at the 2009 Regional Young Enterprise Yorkshire & Humber Awards held at Leeds United Football Club in June.

The awards recognise the hard work of those involved in the Young Enterprise (YE) programme. People travelled from all over the region to gather for the awards. Opening the event was Shaun Harvey, Chief Executive of Leeds United FC.

Nominated by Barbara Cullen, Curriculum Area Manager for Foundation Studies and E2E, Ellie Doughty (21) was presented with the Sir John Moores’ Award which is presented to an individual who has demonstrated outstanding progress in learning, personal development and acquisition of skills. Ellie was Finance Director of Pandora’s Box which made and sold a variety of products during events held by the College, and despite her health problems, showed commitment to the role and working alongside other learners to ensure the success of the business venture.

Barbara has been with the College for seven years but has been involved with Young Enterprise for more than 15 years. She commented: “Ellie was very shy when she started at College but now she is full of confidence and self esteem and has shown dramatic improvements in all areas. If anyone deserves this award it is Ellie, as all those who have worked with her would agree.”

The Young Enterprise mission is to “inspire and equip young people to learn and succeed through enterprise” and each year learners from across the country continue to benefit from the programme.
