Annual Report2009-2010

Buddies ofThe Carey School

Each year The Carey School reports our financial and development statistics to the community as a means of recognizing the generous support the school receives from all of you, and to inform you about the careful stewardship of your donations for the benefit of Carey School students. For the past seven years, The Carey School Community has enabled the school to increase its annual giving totals, coupled with the tremendous achievement of 100% participation from our current parent community and the board of trustees. Few schools in the country can boast of such success, and I thank each and every community member for supporting the school and its endeavors. Indeed, similar to the life long friendships that our older students make with their younger buddies, you are buddies to the school.

To support The Carey School with your annual fund gift means supporting teacher salaries and benefits, it means students are exposed to the wonders of the Bay Area through field trips and guests to the campus, it means that robust professional development opportunities are available to the faculty and administration, and it means that students enjoy classrooms supplied with the very best instructional materials. Through our Tuition Assistance program, your support helps to make a Carey School education accessible to students who may otherwise be unable to attend. Your support helps us stay in touch with alumni as we strive to build connec-tions and provide a warm nurturing community for everyone who is affiliated with the school, whether cur-rently enrolled or returning for a visit.

Additionally, your support of The Carey School enables us to expand our program offerings in order to meet the needs of a twenty-first century education. By partnering with the Parent Association, we were able to replace all of the computers in the technology lab last year, as well as equip our second through fifth grade classrooms with interactive white boards. We also installed the school’s first comprehensive student informa-tion system that helps us to increase accuracy and efficiency across the school. This year, the school and parent association are partnering in the launch our character education and service learning initiatives. You can learn more about this important work of visiting our website, as well as by reading our future edition of our news-magazine, the Carey Connection.

Thank you again for all you do for The Carey School.

Each gift reverberates loudly in the lives of our students and on behalf of all of us at the school, I thank you!

Eric TempleHead of School

Welcome

Last year’s persistent climate of economic uncertainty left many of us wondering what the 2009-2010 school year would bring. Fortunately, due to unwavering and strong demand for a Carey School education, continued prudent financial planning on the part of the Administration and Board of Trustees, and a tremendous level of support from our community, The Carey School experienced a successful financial year.

But financial success goes well beyond attaining a desired number at the bottom of a spreadsheet. When we look at the school’s Annual Fund gifts in support of our ongoing programs that are critical to the success of our school, the story is very exciting. Donors were once again able to target their gifts to support specific areas that matter most to them, in-cluding tuition assistance, faculty support, academic program and the long-term financial stability of the school through endowment. We saw a substantial increase in the number of gifts from our grandparent community, and a dramatic155% increase in the number of gifts from our alumni parents. We are also extremely grateful for the record-high levels of support from those who are also paying tuition - our current parents. 120 families gave at levels 15% or higher than the previous year, helping the 2009-2010 Annual Fund attain a record $327,415 or 122% of the Annual Fund goal. But per-haps most significantly, we saw 100% parent participation in the 2009-2010 Annual Fund for the 13th straight year. This is an enviable achievement and a testament to the value of The Carey School’s extraordinary learning experience. We recognize that the strength and commitment of our community manifests itself in many wonderful ways - from room parenting to teacher appreciation breakfasts to running Careyfest or the school auction - but the generosity as ex-pressed through financial gifts gives us the unique ability to make a difference in supporting the teachers and programs that make Carey the special place it is.

Let me end with a note of gratitude to the Board of Trustees for their leadership and support for the school, to our families, our faculty and staff, our alumni, our grandparents, alumni parents and other friends who chose to support The Carey School this past year. I thank each of you for your continued generosity, and I hope you will continue to support Carey in the years to come.

The Carey School had another notable year - the school was fully enrolled, tuition and fee income increased substantially, annual giving receipts were far greater than the previous year, and the board continued to exercise fiduciary prudence by building the financial reserves necessary for long term sustainability. Due to the generosity of our donors, receipts from Annual Giving increased nearly 13% over the previous year. As is The Carey School tradition, 10% of annual giving receipts are committed to the Carey School Endowment, which has now grown to more than $647,000. Expenditures increased less than 8% over the prior year in spite of the ex-pected increase in personnel costs and an increase in financial aid.
