Page 4: Annual Report Lady Members 2016/17...girls”. And farewell to Ann Fell, Ladies’ Captain. Ann, with her amazing knowledge of all golfing matters, has served the past two years with

It is my pleasure on behalf of the Ladies’ Committee to present the highlights of 2017.

An ongoing project that had its genesis in the lead-up to the 2015 Ladies’ AGM was the revision of the Ladies’ By-Laws, and this task was finally completed this year. The powers of the Ladies’ Committee have not been altered, but the processes for nomination and election of the Ladies’ Committee and the conduct of our meetings are now clearly set out. The legal assistance provided in the re-drafting was invaluable and greatly appreciated. The revised By-Laws will be presented for adoption by the lady members at the 2017 Annual General Meeting.

With the implementation of a new IT system, we have attempted to streamline our trophy donation procedures for 2018 and we thank the

Finance & Administration Manager Judith Hampson for assisting in this process. The generosity of all trophy donors is acknowledged; th is year 153 ladies donated for our Tuesdays, Saturdays or AGM events.

The future format of the Ladies’ Club Championships was decided following the two-year trial and after much discussion, consultation and reflection, and always keeping in mind the perspective of not only our traditions but also our future as an inclusive and progressive golf club. The old saying, “You can’t please all of the people all of the time” has never rung truer, but we firmly believe the format is an acceptable compromise that provides all ladies eligible to compete the opportunity of so doing.

There were also challenges this year in managing the ladies’ Saturday morning timesheet, particularly during the shorter Winter months when waitlists occurred. Difficult decisions were made keeping in clear view not only the interests of the ladies but the interests of all members with Saturday playing rights. We continue to work with the men’s Match Sub-Committee and the Club in monitoring and best managing this.

As always, there were many social highlights through the year, starting with our ever-popular Opening Day. This was a particularly special

occasion with our Life Member Jill Hughes presenting newly elected Life Member Helen Hudson with her Life Member badge. Guest Day, Irish Day, American Foursomes, Pennant and Caddies lunches, Nine & Wine beginner Ambrose events, and Melbourne Cup Day, as well as those events when the midweek and Saturday golfers come together, the Cherry Cribb Memorial, the Club Championships qualifying Thursday, and the Brisbane Cup, were all well supported and most enjoyable occasions. Our 20-Year Anniversary Day was also memorable in that we presented 60-year membership badges to Margie Maher and Nyrie Elcock. We now have four ladies with 60+ years of membership, three of whom still play twice a week - a testament to their love of the game and loyalty to the Club.

The success of these special days depends much on the quality of the luncheon served and I can say this year, thanks to our wonderful Executive Chef Frederick Marechal and his team, that every lunch has been an outstanding success. The level of service and attention to detail provided by the Events Manager Lauren Carr in planning our functions and Bar Manager Rudy Cheong in managing lunch service is exemplary; we are indeed fortunate to have such a team.

Communicating with our members continues to be an important focus, with the

electronic monthly newsletter “News from the Red Tees” keeping members informed and, it is hoped, entertained. Captain Ann Fell’s “White Board Notices” and her PowerPoint presentations on Tuesdays have also kept us abreast of results and upcoming events. Communications with management and the Club Committee continue to be open, respectful and constructive, and I thank particularly President John Kelly and General Manager Geoff Kuehner for not only listening, but always being available for advice. Participation by representatives of the Ladies’ Committee as co-opted members of

the Member Services Sub-Committee continues to be invaluable for the sharing of information and ideas.

The Ladies, Let’s Golf programme continues to gain momentum, and is proving to be the primary source of our new lady members. Working tirelessly throughout the year have been Vivienne Cassidy and Vicki McDonald who co-ordinate a team of over 40 volunteers to provide on-course escorts for the beginner Bronze level golfers and to keep a close eye on the progress of the Silvers and Golds, as well as assisting the graduates to Full or 6-Day membership

assimilate into Club life. Since its inception in 2014, over 86 ladies have joined as LLG members. Of those, 36 have graduated to a Full, 6-Day or Transition membership, with 30 still working their way through Bronze to Silver and Gold. A fantastic result of which we can all be very proud.

2017 also saw the inception of another new pathway membership for those ladies from the Victoria Park Golf Complex who are ready for golf in a club environment. The support of the management and professionals at Victoria Park for this initiative is much appreciated and we anticipate

it will become an additional source of new members.

We are fortunate that so many of our members are only too willing to put up their hands and help whenever the call is put out. As well as the many LLG volunteers, there are those who caddied for our pennant players and helped with the hosting of at-home pennant games; those who volunteered at the Queensland Open; and those who participated in Course Improvement Working Bees. Of all our volunteers, there are three ladies who deserve special mention. Margot McNee together with a small group of fellow-gardeners tend the Centenary and Jacaranda Gardens, and she also keeps us well stocked with her homemade jams and flowers for the locker room. Irene Raymond continues to look after our lending library, and Robyn Cuming creates the Ikebana floral arrangements each week for our locker room. On behalf of all the ladies, I thank you.

Thanks also to Geoff Kuehner, Peter Collins and Judith Hampson for the administrative help and patience with our many requests; to the Course Superintendent Mitch Hayes and his team for the impeccable presentation of our course; and to Director of Golf Joe Janison and his team in the Golf Shop for all your advice and assistance with competition and timesheet matters.

And thank you to my Committee, a wonderful team

of hard working volunteers, always willing to do the jobs that enable you all to enjoy your golfing Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays - and in between. To those who are leaving committee, on behalf of the ladies I thank you for your dedication and time. I know how hard you have all worked, and it is appreciated.

So thank you and farewell to my effervescent and efficient Secretary, Lyn Brandon, prolific writer of get-well cards. Farewell to Vicki McDonald, a quiet achiever and tireless Ladies, Let’s Golf worker. Farewell to Di Hall, Weekend Representative and stalwart supporter of “the Saturday girls”. And farewell to Ann Fell, Ladies’ Captain. Ann, with her amazing knowledge of all golfing matters, has served the past two years with a dedication and enthusiasm beyond reproach.

To the other committee members, thank you. Vivienne Cassidy has been a wonderfully supportive Vice President. The efficiency of Vice Captain Elaine Egerton puts us in very capable hands as she takes on the role of Captain next year. Kerrie O’Callaghan has ably assisted in matters of Match, as well as providing invaluable support to the always busy trophies co-ordinator Lindsay Gaskell. Barb Singleton ably took care of our finances and, of course, the indefatigable Jenny Johnson again managed all matters “house”. I couldn’t have survived the year without your energetic and

enthusiastic willingness to help.

As is to be expected in a cohort consisting primarily of grandmothers, health issues continue to impact many of our members and their families. It is always a joy to welcome back to golf those ladies who have suffered illness or injury but unfortunately, some do not return and it is with sadness we record the passing of past Associates’ President (1990 -1992) Patricia Golledge in October 2016; Dr Gill Parmenter in April 2017; and Robyn Vigar in July 2017. Past member and Queensland golfing legend Joan Fletcher, who is associated with a number of our Honour Board events, also passed away in 2017.

In closing, I would like to pay special tribute to those past captains and presidents who have provided me with wise counsel and to everyone who has supported and encouraged me. I look forward to working with the new committee over the coming year, and wish everyone a happy and safe Christmas and New Year.

Helen PlacanicaLadies’ President

Our season began with a different feel this year as our competition fields on Tuesday and Thursday now begin at 7.00am. While we suffered the extreme hot weather of the first week of our season, 9-hole competitions were offered as an alternative to the programmed 18-holes. By the end of the second week our ladies were all ready to play 18 holes. A 9-hole competition was later instigated on Tuesday afternoons. It has gained a following and serves as a stepping-stone for new players and those returning from injury.

Other innovations for 2017 include the introduction of on-line nomination sheets for special events thus doing away with the paper sign-on sheets in the locker room. The transition to this mode was effortless for the ladies and has made the management of such events much easier. There have since been many applications for this very useful tool. Our members

are well served by our various avenues of communication. The visual aspect of PowerPoint presentations has enhanced our announcements each Tuesday. Many contribute to our monthly “News from the Red Tees”, a very informative and entertaining email newsletter expertly compiled and edited by Ladies’ President, Helen Placanica.

Our Honour Board events are always well contested. Those following the matches in the galleries were treated to some wonderful golf with many matches needing extra holes. My thanks to Elaine Egerton, Kerrie O’Callaghan, Di Hall, Helen Placanica and Leng Ho for assisting with refereeing finals matches during the year.

Our two-year trial of an alternative format for Ladies’ Club Championships concluded this year in July with an enthralling match over 36 holes between Lynne Conroy, who has won 10 championships, and Isabelle Simpson who, at 16, was competing in her first. Issy prevailed to win 5/4 in a match of high quality golf. Beverley Deane showed her experience to win B grade. Jenny Somers, one of our earliest Ladies Let’s Golfers, took out C grade. 2018 will see our Ladies’ Championships return to the alternating matchplay and stroke play format. The matchplay year will be played in conjunction with the men’s championships on Sundays while the year of four stroke rounds will be played midweek.

Captain’sReport

We were also treated to a Champion of Champions match mid-September between our two teenaged champions, Lawry Flynn and Issy Simpson. It took a birdie and eagle finish for Lawry to prevail on the 19th hole. The match was a terrific example of great golf and great sportsmanship from both – an honour to witness.

May saw the 36-hole Foursomes Championship attract a great field of 41 pairs. Lynne Conroy and DeeDee Russell won by a terrific 10 shots over myself and Hazel Martin. It was great to see our scratch markers participating. The Fourqueux Mixed Foursomes Championship, after having been postponed due to severe weather resulting in flooding of the course, was eventually played in April and won by Lynne Conroy and Nick Woodley in a play-off against Lesa Lambert and Jordan Lett. It was Lynne’s 52nd Honour Board win and Nick’s first.

This has been a year of remarkable growth for the ladies’ membership. We have the largest female membership in the district. Increased demand for spaces in our Saturday field brought about the need for a more equitable means of sharing the available time slots, with an allocation based on the proportion of full members who are female being introduced. Our field sizes on Tuesdays and Thursdays have grown by nearly 20% in the last two years. This is due, for the most part, to our “Ladies, Let’s Golf”

08 09

program. It is a testament to the wonderful welcoming spirit of our ladies, so many of whom give their time to assist with facilitating the experience and inclusion of the new members.

Our beautiful course has also attracted some elite golfers to our ranks. Having two scratch markers at the top of our Division 1 Pennant team this year meant good results all the way down. Fielding teams in midweek Divisions 1, 3, 4, 6 and 8 and Weekend Divisions 1 and 2 required a good deal of commitment from our membership. My thanks go to Director of Golf, Joe Janison, for the clinics provided for our pennant players. It was wonderful to see the club spirit as so many

team members caddied for each other when they were not playing themselves. Division 8 served as a trial for an alternative to the Interclub competition that had previously been the training ground for novice pennant players. We enjoyed a great season, being in contention for so many of the pennants all the way to the end. It was especially pleasing to see our Division 6 team win with team members who had graduated from the first intake of Ladies, Let’s Golf. These great results leave us all keen to do better in 2018.

The course received a lot of rain just prior to Guest Day on 13 June although those who braved the conditions made it through the morning without much rain even though it was very wet underfoot. Thanks once again to our very capable committee for morning tea of tasty homemade delights. Those who chose not to get their feet wet returned to join the stalwarts for a delicious lunch in the Tennyson Room.

The annual Challenge events

as Caddy Master and serving in most sessions herself, did a great job. BGC members Margot McNee, Pat Sloan and myself also volunteered. All credit to the team members and management.

Several teams of BGC members competed in the BDLGA Lady Holt Perpetual Trophy event at Pacific Golf Club in August. Thanks to Angela Cottrell for rallying the troops. The team of Margot McNee, Kerrie O’Callaghan, Amanda Harburg and Anna Lyons won this prestigious, and enormous, trophy. BDLGA President Judy Shelton handed the trophy into our safe keeping until next year’s event.

It was a pleasure to celebrate with Raeann Shields after her success in the Queensland Blind and Vision Impaired Open played at Virginia in August. Raeann, ably supported by caddy Julie Anning, scored a terrific 43 points on the first day of competition, ultimately winning her B2 division and coming runner-up overall. Her determination is inspiring to us all.

I want to acknowledge our wonderful staff. We owe a lot to those behind the scenes. Geoff Kuehner and his house and office staff continue to provide us with wonderful services and facilities. Our Executive Chef, Frederick Marechal, continues to delight us at every opportunity. To Joe Janison, Reece McRae and the Golf Shop staff, thank you for your assistance in facilitating ladies’ golf. With your help this evolving process continues.

My “tour of duty” as Ladies’ Captain has come to its end. While it has been hard work, it was definitely a labour of love. I must thank all those

past captains and presidents who have always been willing to offer me the benefit of their experience when I needed it most. We are blessed with a remarkable pool of talent amongst our members. The Ladies’ Committee is an example of this. We work together to improve not only your membership experience, but also to ensure the sustainability of the wonderful culture of friendship that exists here. Under the guidance of President Helen Placanica, we have overseen much progress for the ladies of The Brisbane Golf Club. For all who retire this year, you do so knowing that those who follow will benefit from the path we have paved, as we did from our predecessors, and take up the mantle with enthusiasm. Elaine Egerton will now take on the role of Captain. She has prepared well and I know you will be in good hands into the future. I am sure she and Helen will have a terrific year planned for you in 2018.

are always most enjoyable and friendly competitions. We hosted Royal Queensland this year at the end of February and enjoyed the hospitality of Indooroopilly at the end of March. Having not achieved winning back either of the Challenge trophies this year, we will definitely approach these events with renewed fervour and a new strategy next year.

Our ladies were excited to follow the progress of DeeDee Russell as she competed for Queensland in the Australian Women’s Interstate Teams event in Perth in May. Her “World Tour” in the following months to UK and USA to further her golfing career kept us all enthralled. We wish her every success for next year. Hazel Martin has left our shores for college in USA. Placed at a Tier 1 golf college in West Carolina, she will study Law and Political Science. She no doubt will have the best of opportunities. We wish the best for her career in both studies and golf.

We hosted the BDLGA’s Champion of Champions and Divisional Challenge in May. All of our ladies who played featured in the prizes. Our course, facilities and staff were widely praised for their part in the well-run event.

It was BDLGA’s turn to host the Meg Nunn Salver Inter-district Matchplay Event in September. This annual event brings all seven geographical districts of Queensland together for a grueling week of matchplay. McLeod Country Golf Club was the setting this year. The BDLGA won with a great finish on a day of wild wind and very difficult conditions. BGC member Jackie Zuidam played well to win four of her five matches. Angela Cottrell,

Saturday Ladies’Report

12 13

The Saturday ladies 2017 golfing season commenced on 28 January with a 4BBB event followed by a complimentary lunch in the Tennyson Room. Lunch was appreciated and enjoyed by all.

The Cherry Cribb event held on 9 April was won by the 6-Day Members. The lunch that followed was excellent and included a taster of Cherry’s pumpkin and passionfruit soup.

The Weekend Pennant season commenced in April, and we again fielded one team in each division. This year proved to be more successful for our teams with Division 1 finishing second to Oxley and Division 2 finishing fourth. Thank you to Barb Singleton for again taking on the role of Captain of the pennant teams and to Liz Foreman who assisted her with organising the Division 1 team.

Guest Day was held on 29 April and was again sponsored by SmartProp Realty and we thank them, and Angela Fong, very much for their generosity and trophies. Executive Chef Frederick Marechal prepared a delicious lunch and all our guests commented on the quality of the golf course and lunch.

Our annual Memorial Day was held on 16 September. This day gives us an opportunity to remember our golfing friends who are no longer

with us. We all hope that we manage to get our name on the back of the trophy before the front. The winner this year was Yvonne Butcher.

This year saw the return of our Boomers vs Golden Oldies 4BBB event. The winners on the day were the Boomers. I would like to thank Catherine Hammond for bringing along an emergency kit for the Golden Oldies which included hair rollers, denture cream, Tina Pads and wrinkle cream, just to mention a few.

On 17 September we had our annual pennant and caddy golf and lunch hosted by Pennant Captain Barb. Competition was keen and the lunch that followed was enjoyed by all.

The first Honour Board event this year was the Johnson Staines Fourball. The final, played between Angela Fong and Helen Caris and Ann McKim and Trish O’Connor, was a very closely contested match with the result not known until the 18th where Angela and Helen won 2-up.

The Joan Fletcher Matchplay Championship was held during August and September. Division 1 matchplay final saw Angela Fong and Di Hall meet, with Angela winning on the 19th. Thank you to Elaine Egerton for refereeing this match. The winner of Division 2 was Natalie Cook.

Unfortunately, Deb Calder who managed to make it to the final was unable to play due to an injury.

The qualifying for the Nat Green Foursomes was held on 22 July and the final was played on 5 August between Joyce Cheney and Susan Campbell and Perin Wood and Bev Folliott. The winners were Joyce Cheney and Sue Campbell. This is the second time Sue and Joyce have won the event, with their first win back in 1994. Thank you to Leng Ho for refereeing this match.

One of the big issues in 2017 related to the management of the Saturday morning timesheet. The men’s and ladies’ Match Sub-Committees discussed many options to resolve the issue, settling on access to the timesheet being based on the percentage of ladies and men with Saturday playing rights.

One of the highlights of the year for the Saturday ladies is our annual weekend away. This year 31 of us headed to Twin Waters. Catherine Hammond organised golf on Friday at Maroochy River for 19 ladies and Jan Salzman organised lunch for the others at Coolum. We stayed at Magnolia Lane again and played golf at Twin Waters on the Saturday followed by dinner at the Loose Goose. The weekend again proved to be a success with

lots of laughter and some great golf. This event continues to reinforce the great friendships that exist and gives us an opportunity to introduce some of our new members to the fun.

I would like to thank all the staff in the Golf Shop, particularly Reece McRae and Joe Janison, and the office for their assistance which has enabled me to successfully organise golf on a Saturday. I would also like to thank Executive Chef Frederick Marechal, Rudy Cheong and the bar staff for their friendly and thoughtful service throughout the year.

This is my last year on Ladies’ Committee after three years as the Saturday Representative and I am pleased to be able to hand the reins over to Sue Lewandowski. I wish Sue all the best for the coming year.

Finally, I would also like to thank the members of the Ladies’ Committee for their friendship and assistance during the year. I have enjoyed being able to work with such a wonderful group of ladies.
