ANNUAL REPORT JULY2009 – JUNE 2010

“Be the change you wish for”Indian politics made history on March 9th, when a constitutional amendment bill was passed the Women’s quota Bill allowing reservation of one third of seats to women in Parliament and State Assemblies, 14 years after it was first proposed. Does this mean that the status of women has risen and women are empowered in India?

A recent Government study declared that gender based disparities are declining. In the past 10 year period 1996 to 2006 women’s development has improved – as per a study released by Women and Child Development Sector. But the alarming fact that confronts us is that violence against women, dowry deaths, infanticide and sexual exploitation continue. What is even more alarming is the low female – male sex ratio (933 women to 1000 men) for India today, a decrease since the last decade. Women still need a boost.

In terms of economic progress things looks better: We are progressing slowly. The world too is still recovering economically at the same pace. But the relentless price increases of commodities by 25% on most commodities and 50% in essentials of sugar, lentils have hit the common man. Do we stand by and watch or get involved “Be the change and “See the Difference, Feel the Difference, Make a Difference”

The Reach out Trust has been changing lives, the lives of the Warli Tribal in Talasari, Maharashtra. A research study conducted by us depicted that lack of education, health; job opportunities and poverty were major problems here. The people required assistance to tackle these issues. Our efforts have been toward School Education, Youth skill training, Women’s empowerment and Environment betterment. Some highlights of the last year are now put forward. We now have a website reachoutmumbai.org and hope for interaction from our well wishers & friends on the internet or mail. Some six and ten words quotes have been included to add punch to the matter.

Quote: Developing Countries : “Too many people Too little money Far Too many Guns”

School Education:3 year old “Excited to Eat, Play, Love & Snuggle”3rd Grade student” always in trouble but never troubled by it”

A year has gone by since we are independently managing the Pushpa Vidhyalaya School. We hope to apply for Government funds soon but till then we are thankful to our friends and donor’s for their assistance. We have three full time and one part time teacher. We now have children in six classes from STD 1st to 3rd and STD 5th to 7th. The teachers work hard to set a good academic level for the children. The children also do well in sports, art and cultural programs. Warli art is depicted in the cards made

by the children as seen in this report. The children are provided with a nutritional snack and mid day lunch. Growth monitoring with regular weight check and also medical examination are done by Dr.Tragler on her visits. The children have gained weight and have less medical problems though worm infestations and respiratory infections are still common. The last year the children have been learning conversation English with the help of C.D’s provided to them through the Trust. They even produced an English play to the delight of the audience and parents. Our teachers Anil Moda, Santosh Meghwale, Urmila Kankad and Subash Dongalean continue with us. We hope to have a new teacher for Science & Maths. The total number of children enrolled this June, is one hundred and forty.

Youth Move Forward : “ Quote Youth “Our Goal success. Nothing will stop us”Quote Teenager “Late bloomer, still quietly blooming”. “Nike sportswear made famous by Mike Jordan made by Vietnamese children”

We have had two batches of skill training for Tailoring & Welding with 10-15 youth in each batch. A follow up study has shown good employment for these youths in Industries or through self employment. We hope to restart Computer classes and start English Conversation classes soon. In the month of May a Leadership workshop was conducted for the youth by Sr. Marie Noronha and Ms. Effie Acharya. It was heartening to see the youth open up with improved self confidence and self esteem. They are to keep a diary of the changes that they are making in their lives towards fulfilling their goals. Sunil Correia and Ajit Khandari are our teachers. Sunil also co-ordinates activities and helps in the maintenance.

HEALTH : Quote 1) “Cursed with Cancer, Blessed with friends” 2) “Vitamins Essential Organic Compound”Jyoti, our long experienced Social worker and health supervisor also helps in co-coordinating Trust office work. She maintains health records of birth, deaths and pregnant women, gives medicines and refers patients where

necessary. Health Awareness is given at the monthly meeting. Co-ordination is sought with the Government health assistants. Incidents of T.B and measles have reduced considerably. Malnutrition in the children reflects the poverty of the community 40-50% of the under five and school children are under weight. Alcoholism enteric fever, malaria still takes their toll at the health of the people We have birth and death records of 10 villages (15000 population) There have been no maternal deaths and decrease in the under five deaths. There were 3 infant deaths and one still birth in about 250 births that took place last year. The deaths were due to prematurity, infection and crib death. Of the 17 deaths in adults, 12 cases were cardio vascular deaths. Five of which were below the age of 60 years.

Women’s Empowerment Quote: “Tears an expression of emotion, not real for women and crocodiles.”Women’s strength is seen with improved health knowledge and an economic advantage through Self Help Group (SHG’S). We have 60 women SHGs and 5 youth groups. As a group they save monthly, so to enable them to take both internal loans and bank loans. Women are running

small enterprises like snack shops, growing fruits and vegetable and selling directly in the market. Candle making, basket weaving, goat and chicken rearing are some of their income generating projects. The self help groups are able to maintain their records, and apply for loans & subsidies. In Dolarpada a SHG group made a profit by taking Rs.1, 00,000/- loan for poultry. Another SHG in Dhangadpada took a loan of Rs.7, 000/- for the nutrition program. Women take internal loans of Rs, 2,000/- to 10,000/- for various reasons like Home repairs, medical bills. They pay an interest of 2% monthly and return money in a short time.

Environment Betterment: “Nature a green place a green place you can go to on a weekend, not a fake one”In Dhangadpada our staff together with the community has enlisted the help of local Rotary Club to build a small concrete dam. This monsoon will result in a water conservation project for the surrounding villagers. This is a triumph after many years of waiting. Our school garden is

finally flourishing, after we revived the solar system for the water pump. We have also secured a replacement pump for the Trust land. We had a good crop of mangoes this year and also vegetables as we managed to fence some land.

Our latest venture is a dairy unit. The stable is constructed, and we hope to have buffaloes and a training diary center. Mr. Adolf Tragler’s dream of the Warli tribals involvement in dairy schemes is soon to come true. Ms. Sabine Leschner through Alternaid Stiftung fuer Menschen in Not has shown keen interests in this projects and has contributed to the finances. We hope women’s and youth SHGs will train and start dairy units and one day a co-operative milk scheme will materialize from our initiative.
