A LETTER FROM THE CEO OF WEST OHIO FOOD BANK

For the more than 63,426 individuals below poverty in our 11 county area who face hunger, putting food on the table every day is

a struggle and often means making difficult choices. The true face of hunger is a child struggling to learn on an empty stomach, a

father skipping a meal so his children can eat, a mother working two jobs.

Hunger is not a problem we can easily see, perhaps because its stigma causes people to hide their need. But research shows that

many hardworking individuals are relying on food banks as a part of their long-term strategies to put food on the table. Food-

insecure individuals do not have regular access to enough nutritious food for a healthy, active life. These families, employees, vet-

erans, students, children and senior citizens are the people the West Ohio Food Bank serves in partnership with our member

agencies.

As a proud member of the Feeding America network, West Ohio Food Bank adheres to top industry standards and best practices

that lead to organizational effectiveness and food safety. Stringent food safety practices are vital for the health and safety of our

clients, and to achieve our mission to feed more people. A rigorous food safety program helps West Ohio Food Bank obtain more

food by assuring food product donors that their donations will be thoroughly inspected and monitored every step of the way—

from the truck to the warehouse to the shelter or food pantry.

As we reflect on the past year, we are grateful for the collective generosity of our supporters, partners and friends. We have been

able to accomplish so much thanks to people like you!

Fondly,

FOOD SAFETY

West Ohio Food Bank has the responsibility to ensure that every person who comes to us for help is provided

with food that is safe to feed their families.

Food Safety is a foundational aspect of our work to end

hunger

The landscape of donated food continues to change

WOFB adheres to the same stringent requirements that

grocery retailers, food manufacturers and restaurants in the

U.S. must follow

Third-party audit follows a food safety standard that is

based off of food safety laws and also food industry best practices

West Ohio Food Bank successfully passed their American Institute of Baking (AIB) food safety audit

February 15, 2016.

MAKING TOUGH CHOICES

In our 11 county service area, 85% of our clients had to choose between buying food or paying for their utility

bills or heating fuel

Two-thirds (66%) of households had to choose between buying food and paying for medicine or medical care

in the past year.

10

HEALTH CONCERNS

Malnutrition is a serious, prevalent, growing problem for many older adults in our nation

Poor nutrition has been associated with 300% increase in health care costs

Malnutrition often is caused by an insufficient or imbalanced diet

Bad colds, sore throats and influenza, which are so common during the winter months, can also cause a

myriad of problems for low-income wage earners, and put their households at even greater risk of

hunger

Illness often means lost wages

According to a Labor Department report 2/3 of workers at the bottom 25% of the pay scale do not

receive paid time off for illness,

3/4 of part-time employees are not paid when they miss work due to illness

WEST OHIO FOOD BANK PROGRAMS

Feeding America Donated Program- Offers donated foods from national companies, (and national companies with local presence), which may carry a service maintenance charge of up to 18¢ per pound.

Fresh Produce Initiative Program (ACP) - Offers unprecedented donations of fresh fruits and vegeta-bles, chickens and eggs from small family farmers throughout Ohio.

Ohio Food Program- Offers nutritious, shelf-stable food with high protein items such as peanut butter, ground meats and tuna fish. These items are received throughout the year for emergency pantries/emergency meal sites.

USDA- Federal Commodities Program- Provides a variety of nutritious food items to supplement the “food mix” in meals ‘bagged’ by emergency providers, or ‘served hot’ at meals sites provided monthly during the year along with produce when available.

Reclamation and Recovery Program- Currently operated in a room dedicated to sorting, cleaning, and repackaging food into boxes. Grocery store items are received from Kroger, Wal-Mart, Sam’s Club, Mei-jer Save A Lot, Ruler Foods, Marsh, etc., and through local food drives. In addition, all items received as a result of food drives by schools, organizations and businesses throughout the year are processed through this program.

Mobile Food Program- Deliver shelf stable and frozen foods up to 10,000 lbs. to designated sites, [i.e., a church or other qualifying non-profit organization can distribute those goods to needy families] in a farmers market-like atmosphere. This enables groups to meet area needs without needing permanent food storage/distribution facility.

Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP) Senior Citizens Food Box- CSFP is a federal funded pro-gram for people who are 60+ years of age and whose household income is 130%, or less, of the federal poverty guidelines. Each month the WOFB provides a 32-40 pound box of nutritious food to 1,404 sen-iors throughout the 11-county service area.

Weekend Backpack Program- Approximately 3,600 students, identified by the schools and participate in the free/reduced meal program, receive on Fridays, 6 meals and 2 snacks (2 breakfast, 2 lunch, 2 dinners, 2 snacks and drinks) to consume on the weekends.

Flood Disaster Relief- During natural disasters, in our 11-county service area, water, cleaning sup-plies, and food items are provided to partner agencies assisting their community with disaster relief efforts.

Mobile Produce Market- As a part of Activate Allen County, we provided fresh, affordable produce to food desert areas. The bus had specific stops throughout Allen County where residents could purchase seasonal produce at below retail costs. Credit, Debit, Cash, and EBT were acceptable forms of payment for the produce with no income guidelines.

Free Tax Filing Assistance-Our tax consultants are able to assist individuals in filling taxes (make $65,000 or less) and assist applicants in applying for HEAP, FAFSA, Medicaid and SNAP applications.
