“Waimea is a relaxed community in the Hawaiian style. Friendly, gracious and welcoming, the residents continue a long-standing Hawaiian tradition of memorable hospitality. Well trimmed lawns with unthinkable flower combinations, a riot in color and size, surround small white-trimmed “island style” homes. Mom and Pop stores are scattered throughout this burg of 3,000 and checkout women at the local grocery call every customer by name. The Ranch, its owners and managers have provided much of the history to this area. This has never been more true than the story of one of the best theatres in the state, the Kahilu Theatre.”

Suzanne Brown, Performance Magazine, July 1985

Kahilu Theatre was made possible by Parker Ranch owner Richard Smart, a renowned Broadway performer. Since opening night in 1981, this 20,000 square foot, 490-seat performing arts center named in honor of Smart’s mother, Thelma Kahiluonapuaapiilani Parker, is known as the artistic heart of Waimea. In recent years Kahilu Theatre has ambitiously revamped its presence to best reflect the interests and needs of the community, presenting and producing quality programs that appeal to a diverse population, including music, dance, drama, film, and visual arts. In addition to offering world-class international talent, Kahilu supports local artists, including an annual ‘ukulele and slack key guitar festival, an extensive arts education program, two gallery spaces, and offers a beautiful venue for community groups.

Cover: This year’s Annual Report features our new Kahilu Theatre logo, “Voices.” The graceful circles represent the relationship between the Theatre and our community, how audience and artists, keiki and kupuna, connect and create a greater expression of themselves and each other both on and off the stage.

KAHILU THEATRE 2015 ANNUAL REPORT ~ 3

Aloha e Kākou,

I am delighted to report another exciting year reflecting the growing support and enthusiasm for this Theatre we all hold so dear. You helped our organization thrive with your attendance at shows, participation in our education programs, and your generosity from the heart. It was a dream come true that Friends of Kahilu made possible the purchase of a new Steinway piano with their contributions. We are forever grateful for the essential funding by our private and public funders, community partners and corporate support. Mahalo!

The Kahilu Theatre facility continues to evolve thanks to the $1.5 million funding for capital improvements grant-in-aid from the State of Hawaii. We now have our green room space hosting regular after-school classes and intimate performances, and, at press time for the Annual Report, this new venue has been named the Mike Luce Studio to pay tribute to a great patron’s enduring commitment to the Theatre’s success.

The lobby has never looked better nor felt more inviting. It’s wonderful to see patrons arrive early to enjoy our art exhibits and other pre-show offerings in the gallery spaces.

As we move forward, our focus is on strengthening our education programs: expanding our role in local schools, ensuring we offer a comprehensive youth program at the Theatre, continuing to bring keiki to the Theatre for shows with the artists in our season, and effectively marketing our programs so more of our community can benefit from the arts.

Finally, and most importantly, on behalf of the Board of the Kahilu Theatre Foundation, I want to acknowledge the dedication and hard work of our professional staff, educators and volunteers. Their passion for the arts, and for Kahilu Theatre in particular, is what drives the positive growth we have experienced.

Please enjoy this summary of our achievements over the past fiscal year. We look forward to seeing you at the Theatre!

A hui hou,

Mimi Kerley President, Kahilu Theatre Board of Directors

4 ~ KAHILU THEATRE 2015 ANNUAL REPORT

KAHILU THEATRE’S 34TH PRESENTING SEASON ran from September 2014 to June 2015. Our audiences traveled from all over the island, some drove over 100 miles to attend our shows. They also came from all over the world, and many visitors are astonished to find an arts center with such quality programming in the heart of rural Waimea. Kahilu Theatre provided unique arts experiences to more than 30,000 people of all ages in the past fiscal year.

John Cruz and Family launched the Season in rousing style, to a sold out crowd, and Mavis Staples stoked the fire with another sellout. Sellouts became a regular feature of the Season, with Stars of the American Ballet, Jake Shimabukuro, Maisey Rika, and Kealii Reichel also filling the house to the walls. The biggest success of the year was the Tribute to Sonny Chillingworth with Makana. The first show sold out so fast we added another, and that sold out too! Other very notable crowd pleasers were the Valentine’s Tribute to Patsy Cline, our Youth Review “Back to Broadway,” Kahulanui, and Sierra Leone’s Refugee All Stars.

We finished our Season with a wonderful flourish – the Kahilu Produced “Godspell,” under the direction of Board member Beth Dunnington, played to over 1,000 people over three nights, amazing all with the talent of our young artists, alongside a very moving and high quality production.

Kahilu Theatre’s first priority in its 2014-2019 strategic plan is to expand our educational programs to cultivate an appreciation of the performing, musical, and visual arts within our community, firmly rooting the arts as an integral part of lifelong education and health. During the last year, new education programs were offered for free or at very affordable rates. These opportunities inspired our community’s children in making art and exposed them to positive role models in various art modalities.

In the past fiscal year, we offered twelve Youth Shows and eight artists visiting schools, so that professional artists performed for over 9,580 PreK to 12th grade students. Our K-Arts afterschool classes in partnership with Waimea Middle Public Charter School provided classes in the fall and spring for more than 200 students and concluded with two family finale shows.

Kahilu Theatre collaborated with the Prince Dance Institute for the tenth year to present another extensive program of afterschool dance and performing arts classes. We provided 14 arts classes, for a total of 18 hours a week, to more than 100 kids (and about 20 adults) which culminated in two, very well attended performances of “Legends of the Forest” in Spring 2015.

The Keiki Performing Arts Workshop, a free, two-week summer musical theatre camp, was staffed this year by our Kahilu Youth Theatre Alumni. This year it served 32 students from ages seven to 12, and concluded in an uplifting public finale performance.

Our ongoing Kahilu Theatre gallery shows were attended by more than 1,000 students, whose teachers used the exhibits to enhance their curricula. Four Kahilu Theatre Family Fun Days offered free engaging arts experiences for community members of all ages.

We co-presented the first Aloha Music Camp at Spring Break, with the Aloha Bluegrass Band, offering 40 students discovery and tuition in songwriting ukulele, banjo, fiddle and slack key guitar.

In collaboration with Lava Roots, we presented the 5-week Summer Arts program for children from ages six to 12, with 24% percent of students on full or partial scholarships. Culminating the 2015 fiscal year, Summer Arts filled the house with happy sounds and creativity, ending with a fantastic show with almost 60 young artists involved in the production.
