Dear alumni and supporters,

The Colorado School of Mines Alumni Association (CSMAA) has made great progress in the last fiscal year (July 1, 2014 through June 30, 2015). Thanks to generous donors and dues-paying members, CSMAA continued to engineer your connections to Mines and to each other during the 2015 fiscal year. CSMAA was able to provide over 100 quality events, to publish Mines magazine, and to offer our job board and resume-forwarding services to alumni. Additionally, CSMAA was equipped to support current students: to provide legacy grants and scholarships, to connect alumni and students through campus programs and the Student Alumni Association, to support three golf tournaments for student scholarships, and much more.

The Year in Review:

The 2015 fiscal year master plan ensured the staff and volunteers focused on the following organizational priorities:

I. CSMAA has a clear and achievable operating plan that maintains or increases current staffing and programmatic levels.

II. Through Mines magazine, electronic and social media, CSMAA amplifies the awareness of Mines’ strategic priorities and draws attention to important news, events and accomplishments of interest within the global Mines community.

III. Engage students in the alumni community.IV. Engage alumni to strengthen alumni loyalty

and affinity to Mines.

V. Increase support to alumni and students through the Alumni Job Center.

VI. Foster a connected community by maintaining an alumni database that is comprehensive and current to leverage the university’s ability to respond to alumni, faculty, students and other constituents.

These priorities relate directly to the CSMAA mission, vision, and values, which are featured on a separate page in this report.

To achieve the priorities above, CSMAA filled numerous vacant positions: Deputy Director, Office Manager, Communications Manager, and Editor of Mines magazine. Once the new staff members were appropriately on-boarded,

THE YEAR IN REVIEW AND THE YEAR AHEADthe organization was equipped to focus on its mission. For example, the new editor was able to create and launch a magazine production schedule that includes four magazines per year.

Increased Engagement in the Alumni Network:One key accomplishment in the past fiscal year was the addition of over ten new active sections in the alumni section network. Today, over fifty cities regularly host happy hours, networking events, and more for the alumni and Mines community in their city. By keeping priority IV front of mind, the association was able to increase its outreach to alumni across the globe.

Additional Career Services to Alumni:Another impressive achievement in support of priority V was the launch of the new online Alumni Job Center and the increased focus on providing resume-forwarding services to members. The “Advice from the Top” speaker series brought six professional development workshops to our alumni during this year. These services allow CSMAA to better support alumni looking for new career opportunities.

Increased Accountability and Transparency:One of the greatest successes from this year has been the organization’s renewed focus on accountability, reporting, and financial transparency. For the first time, CSMAA has an understanding of its financial obligations, program costs, allocated overhead, endowed funds, and overall cash flow. This information has shone light on the fact that CSMAA is significantly underfunded. For the 2015 fiscal year, the CSMAA Board of Directors approved a negative budget, withdrawing in excess from the CSMAA endowment. The current membership revenue model does not adequately cover the organization’s expenses for programs, especially the magazine and alumni engagement initiatives.

Priorities in the Year Ahead:As CSMAA looks toward the 2016 fiscal year, it recognizes the need to determine a sustainable model for operations and funding into 2016 and beyond. Although the Board of Directors has once again approved a negative operating

budget for the 2016 fiscal year, the Board and staff recognize that this cannot continue. CSMAA will be sharing additional information and possible solutions with alumni, soliciting input on next steps. That said, the upcoming fiscal year will be focused on the following priorities:

I. CSMAA will have a clear and achievable operating plan.

II. Through Mines magazine, electronic and social media, CSMAA will amplify the awareness of Mines’ strategic priorities and draws attention to important news, events and accomplishments of interest within the global Mines community.

III. CSMAA will continue to engage alumni to strengthen alumni loyalty and affinity to Mines.

IV. CSMAA will continue to collaborate with Mines and CSM Foundation.

On behalf of all staff and volunteers, I look forward to continuing to engineer your connections to Mines, to fellow Orediggers, and to your dream career. Thank you for your interest in and support of your alumni association.

Sincerely,

Emily Gonzales ‘08Interim Director, CSMAA

Those who joined or donated after June 30, 2015 will appear in next year’s annual report. The Mines Alumni Association Board of Directors works closely Colorado School of Mines and the Colorado School of Mines Foundation. Board members are committed to supporting Mines’ overall interests among the entire alumni community and the world at large. Membership represents a diversity of departmental affiliations, class years, geographies, and personal backgrounds. Board positions include president, president-elect, secretary and treasurer, comprising the Executive Committee; an undergraduate and graduate student representative; a trustee representative; and directors focused on alumni recognition, communications, development, and volunteer development. Directors are elected to three-year terms, and the officers are one-year appointments. Board members meet four times per year in person, and committee meetings are held periodically throughout the year. Standing committees of the board include Executive, Finance, Governance, Nominating, Communications and Alumni Recognition Committees.
