Quality At-Home Care - A Model Project
Over four decades, KABC has built an impressive library of guides responding to requests from older adults, caregivers, and aging professionals who seek to know more about good quality long-term care but found that such information from a consumer’s perspective was not always available. That lack of information was certainly the case for our newest quality guide which was completed in 2017.
The Care You Want: A Quality Care Checklist for Older Adults Choosing Care At Home is the latest addition in our consumer quality resource line up. Thanks to a generous grant from the Gould Charitable Foundation, KABC was able to undertake and complete this model project.
To create this one of a kind guide, KABC sought expertise directly from older adults, caregivers, geriatric health specialists, aging services providers, and elder care case managers. We gathered expertise by interviewing, hosting focus groups, and through written surveys. In addition, we conducted an extensive review of relevant research and literature.
Over the past months, we asked older adults who use in-home care services and those who wanted to explore using in-home services to give us feedback on this guide and we’ve incorporated their wisdom.
We are delighted with the results of this collaborative effort and hope you will find it very useful. The guide is available in print and we’ll happily share it with you upon request. As laws change - updates will be made to the digital version available on our website so that you’ll always have the best and most current information.
Late in 2016, KABC was selected by the Kansas Health Foundation (KHF) as one of ten Kansas non-profits to receive a 3-year, $300,000 Health Equity grant. The KHF grants allow non-profits to build organizational capacity and in turn strengthen the ability to build greater health equity for Kansans. In our case, that is for Kansans needing long-term care services.
This innovative and generous grant is certainly achieving its intended goal for KABC. In July 2017, KABC expanded our ability to reach out and actively engage with more older adults in more communities throughout Kansas through the addition of Laura Pfeifer, KABC’s Director of Development and Outreach.
KABC has expanded outreach and engagement through in-person visits, community and health professional training sessions, guidance and support conversations about long-term care needs, and recruitment and engagement of new volunteers, advocates and financial partners.
Some of the tangible results of KABC’s strengthened capacity are new partnerships with businesses and organizations, new tools to create more timely communications on key issues, and most importantly significant public policy successes.
The grant runs through 2019. We look forward to maximizing this opportunity and take a big leap forward in building greater health equity for older Kansans.
