TABLE of CONTENTS

he University’s re-located Waterbury Campus was

dedicated in October, and that Library now serves

as the focal point for the new downtown campus. With

room for about 50,000 print volumes, this networked

facility offers group study opportunities, individual study

carrels, and comfortable seating and provides Waterbury

Campus students and faculty with a wonderful local

library environment.

n the Storrs campus, in response to requests from

students, Babbidge Library extended its closing

hours from midnight until 2 a.m. on Sunday through

Thursday nights and opened earlier on weekends

during the academic year. Thanks in large part to the

generosity of the UConn Class of 1953, the Libraries’

second video theater was renovated, and it subsequently

hosted many classes whose instructors incorporated

video materials into their curriculum. The public

computers in the popular Bookworms Café were

replaced, as were most of the public computers in the

Information Cafes. Photocopy and print services were

adapted to accept Husky Bucks using UConn’s new

“smart” campus identification card.

omplementing these physical improvements, the Libraries also continued to develop our

digital library services. Quest, our implementation of the ENCompass for Resource

Access software, enables researchers to simultaneously search multiple electronic resources

using a federated search engine. The UConn Libraries also joined 14 other Boston Library

Consortium (BLC) members this year in its Virtual Catalog project. Now library users in Storrs

and at the five regional campuses can directly request books that are available at participating

BLC libraries without mediation from Interlibrary Loan staff, speeding up the delivery of sought

after books while at the same time saving valuable library staff time.

abbidge Library and the Thomas J. Dodd Research Center hosted a number of memorable

public programs this year. Babbidge Library’s 25th anniversary celebration featured UConn

Women’s Basketball Coach Geno Auriemma and award-winning author and UConn faculty

member Gina Barreca. The First Thomas J. Dodd Prize in International Justice and Human Rights

was awarded to English Prime Minister Tony Blair and his Irish counterpart, Bertie Ahern. This

year’s RBS Greenwich Capital lecture was delivered by Securities and Exchange Commission

Chairman William H. Donaldson. The Libraries’ exhibits program continued to make a significant

contribution to the campus community’s cultural life with another strong series of exhibits,

culminating in the popular “Birds of a Feather” ornithological exhibits and events.
