MinhEvery time Minh steps foot on the build site to complete her sweat equity hours, she smiles knowing that all of the time she’s invested will not only build a solid foundation for her own family, but for all of her neighbors as well. That strong sense of shared responsibility is something she’s instilled in her daughters who regularly volunteer at temple in addition to their after-school activities.

“It’s been exciting,” Minh said. “I can’t wait to see all the houses complete.”

BrittanyIn 2019, Habitat launched a new program—The Playhouse Experience—inviting corporate teams of volunteers to assemble and decorate children’s playhouses, which are then donated to families through partner nonprofits. Funds raised through the program supports the construction of Habitat homes. Brittany and her kids came to us from our partner nonprofit, The Dougy Center for Grieving Children and Families.

“We really appreciate all the effort that went into the playhouse. The kids have been in it non-stop!” said Brittany. “Thank you for doing this for us! The kids LOVE it!”

AnthonyHaving to decide between affordable rent and his family’s safety was a choice Anthony could not make. So he partnered with Habitat for Humanity to build and purchase a home with an affordable mortgage in a neighborhood where he and many of his neighbors have generational ties to the community. For Anthony, a native Portlander, owning a home in North Portland means he can return to his roots.

“It feels great to know that I can purchase a home and provide a safe environment for my kids,” Anthony says.

JonAs a seasoned carpenter and retired veteran, Jon was well-versed in maintaining his house by himself. But with a deteriorating chimney and roof in much need of replacement, he knew he needed a helping hand to repair his home, so he reached out to Habitat for Humanity for assistance in home repairs.

“It’s a dramatic difference,” he said. “Now, I don’t have to worry about the roof leaking or my insurance being canceled and I couldn’t afford to move. It’s a huge relief.”

Habitat is committed to a Portland Metro region that is affordable to families and individuals living on low incomes—not just today, but for generations to come. The new permanent affordability model will allow Habitat homeowners to continue building equity in their homes, while ensuring that the homes are affordable to the next buyers. This guarantees affordable neighborhoods far into the future. The 15 homes we completed at Cully Place in NE Portland are our first permanently affordable homes.
