Dear Friends of the Museum,At DISCOVERY Children’s Museum (DCM) we don’t typically look back as our days are centered around the demands of the present and preparing for a future as dynamic and colorful as the museum itself. But this last fiscal year we have taken time to reflect on the past – celebrating our 25 years of service to the community. Without the dreamers, visionaries and supporters who came before us and who still motivate us, we never would have reached this milestone and wouldn’t be in a position to aim even higher over the next 25 years.

This past year the museum has worked to build collaborative relationships with like-minded organizations who also serve youth and families and who share similar goals to the museum. Many of those collaborations are highlighted in this report including educational experiences with The Smith Center – The STEAM Project and Where The Wild Things Are. We also engaged with families to get outside and move collaborating with the Outside Las Vegas Foundation on a beautiful, guided Father’s Day hike at Mt. Charleston. Additionally, we partnered with the Las Vegas Philharmonic and their Youth Concert Series; this pilot program allowed up to 400 students per day, from three CCSD Partnership Office pre-selected Title 1 elementary schools, to attend the concert, then spend time at DCM for guided, hands-on learning experiences designed to complement the classical music selections presented at the concert. We celebrated dinosaurs, partnering with Springs Preserve and the Natural History Museum in promoting our dinosaur traveling exhibits through a collaborative marketing campaign. Dinosaurs did roam the desert with all three of us hosting dinosaur-themed traveling exhibits during summer 2015.

All this demonstrates the spirit of learning and discovery evident at our founding only grows stronger. We are excited and preparing for a tomorrow where we will be able to open even more minds to the wonder of arts, science and so much more! The past 25 years have

been very exciting, but I’m convinced the most important and exciting period in our history is yet ahead of us. Thanks to all of you who have supported the museum along the way. Without you we would not be ready to embark on our most transformative journey yet. A journey carried by the momentum of the past and your unwavering support.

I marvel at the possibilities of the future where together we will take DISCOVERY Children’s Museum to an exciting new level of innovation and inspiration leading to a meaningful and relevant impact on generations of families to come.

Sincerely,Tifferney White,Chief Executive Officer | President

Las Vegas Philharmonic Youth Concert Series

The 2015-16 YCS was held in two sessions (November and January) at The Smith Center for the Performing Arts. Over the course of five total days, nearly 16,000 students, along with their teachers and chaperones, experienced the concert series. Two performances were held each day, each seating nearly 1,600 fourth-graders. A pilot program with DISCOVERY Children’s Museum (DCM) was held on all session days, with more than 1,200 students participating in the add-on experiences at the Museum. This pilot program allowed up to 400 students per day, from three CCSD Partnership Office pre-selected Title I elementary schools, to attend the concert, then spend time at DCM for guided and hands-on learning experiences designed to complement the classical music selections presented at the concert.

Nevada Ballet Theatre “Nutcracker Extravaganza”

Since 2013, the museum and Nevada Ballet Theatre have presented the magic

of all things Nutcracker to present a “Nutcracker Extravaganza” on Black

Friday. Children and families learn about this special holiday tradition through set and costume pieces from NBT’s annual holiday production of The Nutcracker, complemented by Nutcracker-themed

educational programming throughout the Museum. Additionally, throughout the month of December, families discover

even more about The Nutcracker through specially planned programming throughout

the museum.

Youthworks ProgramAs the Museum’s signature youth enrichment program, Youthworks has reached more than 3,700 high school students with engaging educational and volunteer opportunities that encourage personal exploration and build confi dence and life skills. Cited as a national model program for low-income, at-risk youth by the President’s Committee on the Arts and Humanities, Youthworks benefi ts the community’s underserved youth by encouraging them to stay in school and graduate from high school.

The program serves approximately 200-250 teens each year and provides them with job readiness and life skills training, homework support, mentoring and on-the-fl oor work experiences. A limited number of youth qualify for a museum internship and the program’s success is refl ected in the nearly 100 percent graduation rate over the last 23 years.

COLLABORATIONS

Boys & Girls Clubs of Southern Nevada

This past March, the museum and Boys & Girls Clubs of Southern Nevada partnered to present STEM based education with a focus on the new and exciting field of NANO science and technology. Through the Nanoscale Informal Science Education (NISE) Network, the museum was one of 100 museums across the country to receive an “Explore Science” kit which is specifically designed to facilitate outreach and collaborations in the community.

Through initial partnership discussions with Boys & Girls Club leadership, we discovered they weren’t familiar with nanoscale science, technology and engineering; however, they were very familiar with STEM and saw the value in providing STEM experiences for their club participants. In response to this discovery, phase 1 of the collaboration included museum staff facilitating a training for club leaders and staff where they experienced and became more familiar with nanoscale science, technology and engineering in an effort to help

prepare the club participants for the Nano minicamp. The next phase of the partnership was museum staff facilitating the minicamps during Spring Break 2016. Seven Clubhouses were selected including Agassi Clubhouse and Engelstad Clubhouse where a total of 160 students were served.

The museum is excited about leveraging the experience from this pilot program to establish collaborations with other afterschool and out of school partners in facilitating this very important and relevant science-based experience.
