From the Chairman of the Board

We recognize now more than ever the importance of community partnering to help families and end child abuse in our state. No single organization can do this alone. It is through our collaboration with other organizations, corporate funders, individual donors and state agencies that we are able to respond quickly and efficiently to the needs of Colorado families.

Families First holds a unique position in the child abuse prevention community. The organization provides education and support services for parents and caregivers while maintaining a residential child care facility for abused children ages three - ten years old. It is our goal to continue developing educational programs and services to end the cycle of abuse and heal Colorado’s children. The Board of Directors is comprised of a diverse group of passionate and committed individuals from the community who actively serve and participate with staff to achieve the goals of Families First.

Sally Newcomb

President, Board of DirectorsFamilies First

From the Executive Director

In 2008, the need for our services grew even more critical as we watched the economy plummet, thousands of jobs were lost and families felt unprecedented stress. At Families First it is our mission to end the cycle of abuse and neglect, and that commitment grew even stronger as we responded to community needs to make life safer and healthier for children in Colorado.

Calls to our Family Support Line reached over 4100 in 2008, indicating the growing need in the community for a listening ear for parents when times get stressful. We also saw a significant increase in participation in our Circle of Parents® groups, education classes and topic specific seminars. Parents reached out for help, and we were there! We continue to collaborate with other agencies and provide training and technical assistance to support the community needs.

At our Children’s Treatment Center, our staff helped the children learn to trust and become part of a family again. The outcomes from the past year were wonderful and inspiring.

We recognized the important and unique role fathers play in their children’s lives and created Parenting Tools for Dads to help non-custodial dads understand that an informed father is an effective father. This 12-session program empowers dads by teaching that parenting can be both exhilarating and challenging, and that identifying their children’s needs is critical to successful parenting.

For over twenty years Families First has been helping families in Colorado with programs to prevent and treat child abuse. Now, more than ever, the need is great! Community, corporate and individual support makes a lasting and significant impact in the lives of children and their families. This is not a problem we can turn our back on. These are not children we can neglect. They need our help and I hope I can count on your support to help Families First provide high quality care and treatment for children and families as our future depends on it.

Mission

It is our mission to end the cycle of child abuse and neglect by providing resources to empower parents, nurture children and strengthen families. We respond to the needs of all families with an approach that is welcoming and collaborative.

Consejos para FamiliasOur mission is to serve all families, and our Consejos para Familias program enlists the active participation of Latino parents in the home/school connection. Hispanic parents learn specific steps that can be taken to enhance school readi-ness and maintain it throughout the educational life of the child. Through firsthand learning of parenting skills in classes and workshops, parents learn how to create strong families.

In 2008:• 4181 parents and professionals called for information, referrals or a listening ear. • Consejos Para Familias intent is to bridge the educational achievement gap by enlisting the active

participation of Latino parents. Last year we received 386 calls. Consejos para Familias is a statewide resource for parents and professionals.

• We made monthly follow-up calls to determine if the caller found the call useful or helpful. In follow-up evaluation calls:

90% found the Support Line worker helpful and knowledgeable.87% found the information helpful.71% found the referrals appropriate to their needs.60% reported a meaningful change in their situation.

The Family Support LineParents often need a listening ear to provide support, encouragement and resources when life is challenging. Our Family Support Line is the place Colorado parents can receive non-judgemental, supportive advice and compassion to help them make good choices for their children, and their families.

The Support Line is available from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily. Our trained, caring volunteers offer assistance and education to any parent, caregiver, or professional willing to ask for help, regardless of circumstance.

We also are the entry access for the Colorado Fatherhood Initiative who advertises our toll-free state wide number. Bilingual Spanish support is available.

Parent Education ClassesChildren are not born with an instruction manual, and we’ve seen that many parents would make good choices if given good information. Our Parenting Classes and Workshops teach effective communication and disciplinary skills for parenting children, from birth to young adulthood.

• 38 parent education classes, 16 topic specific seminars including four in Spanish and six massage instruction classes. In addition, 50 scholarships were given to parents in need.

• 534 parents learned new parenting tools in parenting classes and seminars.• 70 parents learned the importance of parent-child attachment and establishing boundaries through massage instruc-

tion techniques.• 8 dads completed the Parenting Tools for Dads workshops• 5 grandparents attended the Kinship Conference (Families First was a co-sponsor of this event)

The Children’s GroupWhile their parents attended our groups and classes, 284 children attended our Children’s Program. We offer a structured Children’s Group to provide fun activities and creative projects for the children. Our trained, experienced volunteers provide children with an opportunity to learn appropriate skills for socializing and self-control. Maria, a mother of three, said “Knowing that my children were having fun in the next room made it easier to go to the classes. I learned how to be a better parent for them.”

Parent Education Classes

Circle of Parents® is the National Network of Mutual Sup-port and Self-Help Programs in Partnership with Communi-ties, a collaborative project of Prevent Child Abuse America and the National Family Support Roundtable.

We have found that when groups of parents come together and share frustrations, learning’s and support, they don’t feel alone in their struggles. Our Circle of Parents® groups are no-cost (free), parent-directed and professionally facilitated. It’s a friendly, supportive environment led by parents with the help of a trained facilitator. During a group meeting anyone in a parenting role can openly discuss the successes and challenges of raising children.

• 14 groups met weekly where parents and caregivers found fellowship, support and encouragement in the difficult job of parenting. Specialized groups were held for Active Dads, Single Mothers, and Parents of Pre-schoolers. Seven other groups were open to anyone in a parenting role , three groups were held at Early Child-hood Education programs and one in Fort Collins.

• 272 parents and caregivers attended Circle of Parents® Groups.

The Children’s Treatment Center provides a therapeutic community for young children, struggling with the emotional trauma of abuse and neglect suffered in their homes. This community is modeled on healthy family living and provides a unique opportunity for children to recover from their trauma and for families to develop healthy interactions.

Thirteen children were treated at The Children’s Treatment Center this year. These children received:• Over 152 group therapy sessions. • 872 individual and family therapy sessions.• 2,992 individual days of care, treatment and support.

• Of the 13 children served, two have returned to their original home, four have been adopted and seven are still in placement with us. We are proud that none of the children discharged from The Children’s Treatment Center have gone to another temporary placement or to an equal or higher level of care!

Children’s Treatment Center

The Children’s Treatment Center exists as a partnership of treatment staff, children, parents, caseworkers, schools, community providers and volunteers where every interaction is an opportunity for healthy change.

Jeffrey’s* Story When Jeffrey first arrived at the Children’s Treatment Center, he was timid and rarely spoke. His trauma at the hands of his father ran deep. Instead of talking, he spent hours drawing the most amazing pictures of flowers, animals and a family. He expressed himself with crayons in a way he could not verbalize. This bright 5 year old boy had the emotional maturity of a toddler. The staff worked with Jeffrey to help him trust again. Hours of intensive therapy helped this young boy understand and deal with his past and move forward. Jeffrey was adopted and lives with his “forever family” learning to express himself with his words while continuing to draw the new world he sees around him.

Promoting Protective Factors for Healthy FamiliesFamilies First adheres closely to an established set of protective factors which have been shown to increase the health and well-being of children and families. These attributes serve as tools and resources, helping parents and care-givers make healthy and safe parenting choices, particularly under stress.

Regardless of a child’s age, ethnicity, economic status, religion or family status research has demonstrated that these protective factors increase the parent’s ability to raise healthy children and lower the incidence of abuse and neglect. We promote these factors in all of our work with families.

• Child/Parenting Nurturing and Attachment (creating bonds)• Parents’ Knowledge of Parenting Skills and Child Development (information and education)• Parental Resilience during Stress (coping mechanisms and skills)• Social Connections to Family, Friends and Community (avoiding isolation)• Provision of basic Necessities (prevents maltreatment)

(* not his real name.)

Volunteers are an integral part of our organization. They provide direct care to abused and neglected children at the Children’s Treatment Center, information and referral sources to callers through our Family Support Line, and help plan and implement children’s activities for our Children’s Groups. Last year 49 program volunteers contributed over 3,732 hours of direct services to the children and families involved in our family of services.

This year, FRIENDS recruited 314 members and raised $198,506 through special events. Thanks to the 100 active FRIENDS members who contributed over 2,139 hours of their time organizing the fundraisers, soliciting donations, and making the children feel special during the holidays, their birthdays and all the times in-between.
