As an intelligent, striking, and articulate young
man, Mazin has his sights set on a future in
broadcasting!
But things have not been easy for Mazin and
his family. At a young age, Mazin was forced to
take on responsibilities that most teens his age
do not have to worry about. After undergoing
several surgeries, Mazin’s mother was no longer
able to work. As the sole caretaker of Mazin and
his brother, she quickly depleted her savings
to pay for medical bills and support her family.
In the midst of financial insecurity and the
looming threat of homelessness, Mazin was the
rock for his mom and little brother.
Then, after months of uncertainty, Mazin and
his family were referred to our Shelter-A-Family
supportive housing program.
With the weight of instability lifted, Mazin is
able to let his intelligence and creativity shine
and is on the path to success. Through our
Shelter-A-Family supportive housing program,
Mazin and his family have a place to call home
and Mazin’s mom has access to the resources
she needs to manage her disability. Mazin’s
family’s basic needs are met while community
resources and networks of support are helping
them become economically independent.
As a part of Shelter-A-Family, Mazin receives
educational and emotional support through
the Youth Connect program which provides
peer support and coaching on social, physical,
and emotional well-being. With the everyday
support of Families First staff, Mazin has also
had the chance to explore his passion for the
arts.
This year, Mazin had the amazing opportunity to
participate in our Real World Youth Conference,
sponsored by our partners at General Electric.
This one-day conference gives all of the
youth involved in Families First programs the
chance to participate in “real world” activities,
hear from interactive speakers, and receive
resources from
participating
partners in the
community.
Activities are
designed to
teach important
skills for leading
a successful and
self-sustainable
life.
HOUSING Shelter-A-Family Supportive Housing Program: MAZIN’S STORY

“If I can help people
from going through

did, I’ll fight tooth

sure that happens,”
– MAZIN, who loves
giving back by lending
support to other teens
in the Shelter-A-Family
program.

At age 17, despite her family’s struggles with
instability and homelessness, Aysha is on the
path to succeeding as a student, a mother, and
member of her community thanks to an army of
supporters she has found through Families First.
At the age of 10, Aysha became the head of
the household as her mom received treatment
for substance abuse. By the end of her 8th
grade year, her family was on the verge of
homelessness. And at
15, she gave birth to a
beautiful baby boy. Some
would say the cards were
stacked against her.
Now, Aysha and her
family have a permanent
home and are receiving
counseling and coaching to
set them on a path towards
success.
With the support of
Families First staff in both
our Teenage Pregnancy
and Parenting and Shelter-A-Family programs,
Aysha is learning how to set healthy lifestyle
goals for herself and her two-year-old son,
Amorie. She is also receiving the coaching she
needs to learn how to
juggle the demands of
being a young mother
with the need to focus on
her future – for her sake
and her son’s.
Our Teenage Pregnancy and Parenting
Program supports young moms and their
babies through coaching and goal-setting,
access to pre and post-natal health care,
and educational support. Young women like
Aysha learn how to make healthy choices
for themselves and their babies during and
after pregnancy, while balancing school and
maintaining healthy relationships.
As part of
the program,
Aysha was
able to
participate in
the Ultimate
Life Summit
in the summer
of 2017. The
Ultimate Life
Summit is a
week-long
program
where teens
learn the life
skills and mastery that lead to success. Filled
with interactive and hands-on activities, the
summit leads each student to creating their
very own life plan to take action for their future.
HEALTHY PREGNANCY & PARENTING FOR TEENS Teenage Pregnancy and Parenting Program: AYSHA’S STORY
100% of the babies in our
Teenage Pregnancy
& Parenting program
were born on time
and healthy
AYSHA says she left the Ultimate Life Summit as a whole
new person with new mindsets to use in her day-to-day life:
“No matter what the situation is at home, at the
summit it was a safe place to gather with peers,
share thoughts and ideas, and put goals to paper.”

Artist, musician, entrepreneur – Monzavia is
motivated to make his mark on the world! A
former resident of our boys foster care group
home, Monzavia is now employed and living
on his own. As Monzavia was aging out of our
cooperative (a boys group home placement)
at 18, he faced challenges that many young
adults encounter, but he lacked the traditional
support system he needed to help him navigate
his journey into independent living and young
adulthood.
Through our Independent Living Program,
Monzy found the support he’d been looking for
all his life, while gaining the tools to live on his
own after foster care. Monzavia receives life
coaching from Families First staff along with
encouragement to pursue his creative talents.
Through Families First, Monzavia also found his
forever family. Monzavia now has a place to call
home and a big family to share his life with!
Families First is instrumental in connecting
youth like Monzavia with forever, loving families,
and permanent homes. We create opportunities
for youth to develop strong bonds with
mentors, volunteers, and a community of
support. Our dedicated staff are also equipped
with the skills to pair children with foster
families who often become their forever
families.
CREATING FOREVER FAMILIES Foster Care & Adoption:MONZAVIA’S STORY

have remained intact.
19 foster children

Our Early Childhood Education
and Parent Leadership program,
CHISPA (Spanish for “Spark”),
provides young parents with
the tools they need to turn that
“spark” into a flame for their
children’s learning and success
in school. The program promotes
early childhood education and
development for children, ages
0-5, in Gwinnett’s Spanish-
speaking community by providing
parents with leadership training
and community resources to
be their child’s first teacher
and best advocate. In addition
to the teachers-as-parents
approach, CHISPA encourages
young moms to be self-sufficient
through accessible training and
community events.
This year, CHISPA mothers participated in
several opportunities, such as the ongoing
Fostering Families leadership training, which
empowers young mothers to be the voice for
their children and use tools that allow them to
be more active in their child’s development.
Many of the moms also became ServSafe
certified, allowing them to take on managerial
roles in the food industry and participate
as vendors in food and cultural events in
Gwinnett County. The ServSafe training and
certification not only provides the moms
involved in the CHISPA program with a pathway
to self-sufficiency, but it also gives them the
opportunity to share important parts of their
culture with the rest of their community.
EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION Early Childhood Education & Parent Leadership: THE CHISPA COMMUNITY
94% of
parents participating
in our school transi-
tion program showed
interest in leadership
activities in their
children’s schools
“We are preparing more and more each day to
uplift these women and bring them closer to
success,” says CHISPA Program Coordinator,
Soledad Ruiz. By providing parents with the tools
to be independent and self-reliable, CHISPA has
built a strong community that supports each
other and lifts its children up.
