Kewdale Little Athletics Club Annual Report 2014-2015

President Report

It is with enthusiasm and pride that I

reflect on the successes of the Kewdale

Little Athletics Club this past year. The

triumphs we have had both in the field

of play and off the track administratively

are now ensuring that a significant

number of our athletes are enjoying the

benefits of our program in various

formats undertaken by our club.

A revitalised spirit of cooperation

between Committee, parents, athletes

and the Belmont Little Athletic Centre

(BLAC) has blossomed over the past

twelve months. I believe in part this is

due to the introduction of new training

shirts and a club banner, provided by

David O’Heare from Café2U, as their

purpose was to encourage a sense of

belonging and unite amongst athletes

and our families. It also displayed to

other centre Clubs a social

togetherness and warm fellowship

exists at Kewdale, as that would exist in

a cheerful family.

Throughout this year, members and

other Club and Centre officials have

commented and acknowledge that

there is a clear indication attitudes have

changed around the Club for the better

and this has created a sense

collectiveness. This was my primary

focus from day one and I wish to thank

the Committee for backing this vision.

All the success this year could not have

been achieved without Coaches Brad

Gray, Steeve Howes and Paula

Pereira-Ninyett. This excellent group of

diverse and multi-skilled individuals, all

have a passion for athletics and

performing their duties on a voluntary

basis. We are very fortunate indeed to

have such an enthusiastic and

competent individuals bringing their

experience and unique characteristic to

the Club. Together they have raised the

bar even higher for our athletes. I

contend they deserve extra special

recognition for their leadership and time

and energy that they gave to our

athletes to prepare for competition.

To my right and left hands and my back

support; Kelly Taylor, Joanne Gray,

Karen Winterburn, Kelly Ninyett and Liz

and Greg O’Meara thank you for your

much-appreciated advice, counsel and

support. You all embedded the vision

of fun and harmony into the Club. I have

been impressed with your ‘strong

commitment’ to the Club and this gave

me confidence in our decision-making

during the year. For me, working closely

with you has been an extremely positive

and rewarding experience. I believe it

has been vicariously through these

types of relationships that has

witnessed the KLAC morph from a Club

to a family.

As a not-for-profit organisation we

fiscally operator through the generosity

of others. The support and patronise

from BLAC clubs and KLAC members

to our fundraisers was significantly

higher than previous years. This can

only occur with the backing and support

of sponsors, local businesses and our

great members; to whom I send a big

thank you.

There has been a significant amount of

work occurring in the background this

years with sponsors and local industry

and I wish thank Wayne Ninyett for his

efforts in creating new sponsorships

and donations from a variety of

organisations. The Finance Report

highlights a significant increase to our

bottom line as a direct results of these

efforts.

The Committee has continued its

responsibilities to athletics and worked

in close association with the BLAC

executive. The relationship between

the two groups continues to strengthen

and I commend the very hardworking

BLAC staff for their tireless work in

keeping the wheels in motion toward

achieving common goals.

Last but not least; to our wonderful

Athletes. In the private sector they

measure success through shareholder

wealth. In public sector on value

delivered. At KLAC we measure

success from the number smiles and

volume of laughter. I am happy to report

the smile counter and sound level meter

both broke due to being over worked

this year. It is also measured by your

attendance and enjoyment, not just

winning and personal bests.

We’ve seen great progress over the last

year. I wish you all unlimited success

for the season 2015/16 and ask that as

an athletics community we work

together in a positive spirit of harmony,

to improve the sport of track and field

for our local community. I trust the new

committee will continue to build upon

the successes of season 2014/15.

Records and Rankings

Each event an athlete competes in is added up and when the athlete reaches 100,

200, 300, 400 or 500 events they receive a badge for the milestone. The intention is

to remind athletes they are on a journey and that they have reached another milestone.

Participation and doing your best is more important than winning at Kewdale. No other

Centre recognise these milestones.

The following represents achievements by our athletes in 2014/15.

Given Surname Date Badge

Joshua Ninyett 22-11-14 100

Lillian Ninyett 22-11-14 100

Bordie Gray 22-11-14 300

Jed Appleton 22-11-14 300

Jordon Hickmott 08-02-15 300

In addition to these achievements our athletes broke twenty nine (29) Kewdale

Records, competed in 2065 events and achieved 1114 personal bests. These PBs

represents an increase of 4.8%, which is an exceptional effort considering our

membership decreased by 48% from 64 members in 2013/14 to 43 this year. This

outstanding effort has to be contributed to our athletes drive to achieve and an

outstanding coaching effort.

Finally, our total clubs points equated to 11905 an increase of 31% up from 9077 total

points in 2013/14. Need we say any more about how successful our athletes were in

2014/15. Well done to all.

Registrar's Report

I am pleased to report forty three (43) athletes

registered for the 2014-2015 season. Despite a

smaller number of registrations in comparison to

previous years and at the bottom of the Olympic year

trough, Kewdale Little Athletics Club continued to

have a core of dedicated athletes and parent

volunteers.

Table 1 details distribution of our athletes by age

group. This season the genders were more balanced

than previous years with boys previously

outnumbering our girls. The biggest age groups were

the under 7, 10 and 12’s, the under 15-17 athletes

continue to be underrepresented.

Table 2 compares current registrations with previous years. Fewer athletes registered

than in previous seasons despite advertising in all local primary schools and at the

local Belmont City College.

Olympic years are highlighted in yellow. There tends to be more interest and athlete

registrations during Olympic years.

Table 3 and the accompanying graph, compare the retention of existing athletes

versus the recruitment of new athletes. Kewdale LAC has retained 29 of its previous

61 athletes which is just less than half. The table and graph illustrate that older athletes

are more likely to remain with their club once registered.

A future challenge for the Club will be to retain their older athletes whilst marketing the

benefits of our Club to younger athletes. Strategies to support younger athletes and

their parents to remain in the sport will need consideration.

Club Managers Report

Well, what can I say, a year of being

Manager for the Kewdale Little Athletics

Club. Before I start I want to say a huge

thanks to my family for supporting me

through this year. The question was

asked, “why do you take on these

positions”? After this year I can say, “It’s

for all those kids that come every week to

training and competition”. You may not

achieve PB’s but they have smiles on

their faces just for being here.

Once I got to know everyone and if I don’t

know you; I do sincerely apologise. The

he job was easier than I thought because

of the support of everyone, the

committee, coaches, officials, parents,

and athletes this year saw many events

accomplished by our little club and the

rostering system was easy for

competition day. Some days did see me

twist a few arms and rip off a few legs but

no harm was done; I hope?

We had athletes compete in the Teams

Events at WA stadium, State Relays and

Field Events, Multi-event at Gosnells,

Christmas Gift Runners and the Zones

and State Events in March. And we had

a parent team in the Christmas Gift Relay

– thank you Dave, Anna, Tanya and

Geoff.

To help these athletes learn new skills a

huge thankyou to our coaches, Brad,

Paula and Steeve. Also the organisation

of Glen, Sandra and Cathy throughout the

season gave a little bit of expertise into

the trainings. Unfortunately we ended up

cancelling a few of our training sessions

later in the season due to uncontrollable

weather predictions, but the athlete’s

health and safety comes first.

The well organised fundraisers, saw the

club raise healthy funds for the club to use

where necessary. Mark and Wayne you

have done an amazing job behind the

scene with club sponsors, Kassems, John

Hughes, The Coffee Guy, IGA and the

Belmont Professionals.

Before I finish I must say a huge thank

you to Greg O’Meara my computer brain.

Without you half the Facebook and

communication with our families would

not have happened.

So to the athlete’s, take care in the off

season, look after your parents and

guardians and we will see you back here

at the end of the year for another season.

Senior Coach

I hope all the athletes and parents enjoyed the season, a very long and hot one, in a

new look Kewdale club where the athletes and parents have been fantastic. We a

very high Personal Best count and numerous Kewdale records broken, not to mention

a very high strike rate in the BLAC awards considering the size of our club. Our only

downfall was our parent relay team who may need a little more training.

BEFORE

AFTER

During the season I have had the opportunity to coach all the athletes at one time or

another. I have been very impressed not only by their ability but some wonderful

personalities and lovely children.

To my senior group, I thought I had scared you all off in the first week due to the hard

work ethic I employ. But to your credit you all did yourselves proud by sticking with it;

you’re are a great bunch.

I have seen so much improvement through the year, well done to all of you.

Remember hard work means great results not just as an athlete but in everything you

do in life and you all have thoroughly deserved all the success this season.

Thanks to the other coaches Paula and Steeve and to all the parent helpers during

training.

Finally, Mark and KT (Kelly Taylor) and the rest of the committee; job well done, you

have the club in good shape for next year.

Junior Coach

I short message to say it has been a good year coaching the 6-8 year olds. As you

can imagine as parents it was challenging at times, but very rewarding. The athletes

have all improved and most rewarding was witnessing the increase of PB's.

I couldn't have done the coaching it without the help of Jeff, Daniel and David and the

numerous of other parents who jumped into assist. The training was also well

programmed this as we considered the weekly program and we trained for those

events to get all the athletes ready for Saturday competition.

It was great to see newcomers like Alexa

and Will awarded the runner up champion

trophies for BLAC. As their coach this

was a very reward experience for me,

thank you to all for a wonderful year.

Delegates Report

It is the responsibility of the club delegate to

attend the Executive and Delegates meetings

once a month. These meetings can be very

involved (often over 3+ hours) and general

contains information relevant to our club. More

often than not it is more about what the BLAC

Executive is doing as a whole to improve

conditions for our athletes. This year the focus has

been on providing better facilities and equipment.

As club delegate, our role was more as an ‘interested

onlooker’. More often than not, the ‘juicy’ stuff was

behind closed doors and decided by the Executive which

did not require any input from the club delegates. As

such we had fairly limited involvement at these BLAC

meetings.

Liz O’Meara and Karen Winterburn

Club Delegate

Special message –

Liz would like to take this opportunity on behalf of Greg, Kate and herself to thank the

club for their patience and understanding during Kate’s illness. Whilst we have not

been in attendance at Kewdale, Greg continued his role as Chief Track Umpire and

Timing under the banner of Belmont though performed the function as a Kewdale

parent.

We are very proud to be part of the Kewdale family and all parents and athletes should

be as well.

Equipment Report

The equipment has been brilliantly

looked after by the coaches, parents

and athletes this season. We had a few

issues in the first half of the season with

BLAC not being happy with how the

equipment was left at times. On those

mentioned days Bradley Edwards and

myself went and cleaned it up after

most had left on a Saturday. Also there

were some issues with the increase

tents being taken out but that has all

worked out and everyone was smiling

once more.

For the second half of the season all the

equipment was correctly packed away

and there were no more tent incidents

and other equipment issues, which was

great. If we can continue to do this

throughout the next season it will

support what is now a positive

relationship with BLAC and make the

new Equipment Officers that much

easier. Not to say to the incumbent

Equipment Officer the role difficult, just

why make something hard when it

doesn’t have to be. Essentially we don’t

want BLAC frowning upon us and not

being happy with the equipment being

messy in their shed.

After four (4) years of serving KLAC I

will not be returning on the committee

next season. I wish all the new

committee members the best of luck

and remember to have fun. At this

point, Kate may not return either next

season, though I will most probably

continue as Chief Track Umpire (CTU)

and may consider a role on the BLAC

Committee. If I do continue as CTU I

will be taking on the role as a KLAC

volunteer, which means one less

position to roster each week.

Many thanks to KLAC for four (4) years

of fun and enjoyment. It is a fantastic

club and I have made some great

friends.
