Program opportunities include portfolio development, artist studio visits, career exploration and paid internships. TAP is comprised of three interdependent tracks:

PORTFOLIO DEVELOPMENT:

Individualized portfolio development for teens interested in applying to a specialized arts high school and/or college. Over the course of 8 months, teens and mentors work 1-on-1 to research perspective schools, develop a visual arts portfolio, and prepare for the rigorous application, interview, and audition process.

CREATIVE LAB:

Creative Lab offers teens an introduction to the many facets of the creative industry. Youth and mentor pairs meet monthly, to visit artists’ studios/museums, participate in professional development workshops, and build visual literacy. Teens work to build communication, networking, resume writing, interview and digital literacy skills. Over school breaks, teens visit top creative companies, meet employees, learn about their jobs and the paths they took to get there.

ARTIST VISITS

“I’m able to SHOW WHAT I’M THINKING through canvas or photography. I’m able to SHOW MY INDIVIDUALITY using the RESOURCES that Free Arts has.”

Mentors aren’t just role models: they help us to see the potential inside ourselves. Yet so many young people are missing the mentorship they need to become the best version of themselves.

For 17-year old Rhesa who graduated in our Portfolio Development Program, her journey of self-discovery was prompted with her Free Arts mentor, Maggie. Over the course of this year, Maggie and Rhesa explored new mediums of art like film and photography, worked together to develop Rhesa’s visual arts portfolio, and navigated the difficult process of applying to art school.

Rhesa will attend the School of Visual Arts in Fall 2019, and has spent her senior year apprenticing with contemporary artist Eddie Martinez. Beyond their meaningful connection, Maggie’s mentorship through our Teen Arts Program has brought Rhesa closer to her dreams of becoming a professional artist.
