*Although here we have mentioned few names who were at both teams and who were actively

participated in tournaments, there were big number of other friends who joined us with practices and

events organized by pera chess commune.

Sri Lanka University Games – 2013

This year Sri Lanka University Games was held from

2013/05/10 to 2013/05/12 at University of Moratuwa. This

year Moratuwa team got advantage with much experienced

players and also university of Colombo and University of

Jayawardenepura also got very strongs teams. Both our

mens team and also womens team consisted with very

strong players like Rajapakse, Hettiarachchi , Lasitha

Herath, Thilini Koswatta and Lashika Rajapakse. So we had a

big confidence that we can face any powerful team.

We were able to smash University of Kelaniya (5-1)

and University of Wayamba (6-0). But unfortunately

were lost to University of Moratuwa (2-4). Although

we again smashed University of Uva wellassa (6-0)

and University of Jayawardenepura (4-2) we

couldn’t reach to catch the University of Moratuwa. So we had to satisfy with second place.

Our womens team also ended up with 4th place.

But they also fought very well. According to game

points we can see they have gained highest game

points. But unfortunately because of losing match

points to University of Moratuwa(2.5-3.5) and

University of Colombo (2.5-3.5) they ended up with

4th place. They were able to defeat University of

Rajarata (5.5-0.5), University of Ruhuna (3.5-2.5 )

and University of Jaffna (5.5-0.5).

World University Games Selections 2013

World University Games Selections were held from 2013/03/02 to 2013/03/31 at University of

Moratuwa, to select five players represent Sri Lanka in the World University Games at Kazan, Russia.

Seven players were participated in the tournament representing University of Peradeniya. Among them

four players were able to select for represent Sri Lanka. So University of Peradeniya was able to grab 4

places out of 5 in this selection tournament.

Champion(Men) : R.M.C.M. Rajapakse.

Equal Second Place(Men) : A.U. Hettiarachchi.

Champions(Women) : K.C.T. Koswaththa.

Equal Second Place(Women): L.N.Rajapakse.

Other Participants : H.M.I.S. Karunathilake, H.R.S.P. Premarathne, K.R.D.K. Karunathilake.

World University Games Kazan-Russia

Although four University of Peradeniya chess

players were selected to represent Sri Lanka at

World University Games, unfortunately only

one players was able to go to the tournament.

So R.M.C.M. Rajapakse represented Sri Lanka at

World University Games. He is not only the

best player in University of Peradeniya team,

but also one of best players in Sri Lanka who

represented Sri Lankan national team several

times. But at the starting ranking list of the

tournament he was ranked as 70 out of 86.

That represents the toughness of the tournament he faced. There were more than 50 titled players in

the tournament. Chatura Rajapakse was fought very well in the tournament defeating one IM two FM

and one CM and also he was able to draw a game with a GM. He scored 4.5 out of 9 points coming to

49th place in the final ranking list. It can be considered as the best achievement made by any Sri Lankan

player in World University Games in any sport.

Sri Lanka Super League Selections – Kandy

Three teams representing University of Peradeniya were participated in Sri Lankan Super League

Selections – Kandy which was held from 2013/09/27 to 2013/09/29 at University of Peradeniya and

NICD polgolla. This time tournament was organized by Pera Chess Commune in collaboration with Sri

Lanka Chess Federation.

But unfortunately because of most of our players had to give up games due to exams we couldn’t play

the tournament well. So we had to satisfy with 4th place for men’s team and 5th place for women’s team.

64 squares Rapid Chess Championship

Rapid Chess Tournament was organized by 64 squares international chess academy at NICD polgolla, with the participation of 74 teams. University of Peradeniya participated in the event with three teams. And we were able to grab the two championships and equal third place also. Champions : Pera Kings 1.Chathura Rajapakse 2. 5th Ethugalpura International Rated Chess Championship 2013

This tournament was held from 2013/12/07 to 2013/12/11 at Hotel Blue Sky, Kurunegala. H.S.P.R.

Premarathne was participated to this event and was able to score 5 points out of 9 games.

4th Kandy Open International Rating Chess Championship – 2013

This tournament was held from 2013/08/06 to 2013/08/11 at NICD , Polgolla. Six players were

participated to this tournament representing University of Peradeniya, and all of them were able to get

remarkable points in the tournament.

This tournament was held from 2013/02/03 to 2013/02/08 at MAS Park Hotel. R.M.C.M. Rajapakse was

participated to this event representing University of Peradeniya. And he was able to win 5 out of 9

games

Chess Orientation Program for Beginners

We organized beginners training workshop for university students with

the goal of giving new players to start playing chess and join the pera

chess commune. This was held at the Chess Room of University

Gymnasium on 4th of July. The event was succeeded with over 30

participants. And then they were joined with us in our regular chess

practices.

Chess Coaching Camp

We organized a Chess Coaching Camp at Mayurapada College, Mawanella with the idea of sharing our

experiences with upcoming chess minds in sri lanka and giving little kids an opportunity to get advices

from most experienced chess players in the country. This event was very successful with over 80

participants from every age category.

The children and also teachers were

very excited about the event.

Pera Novices Chess Championship – 2013

This tournament was organized by Pera Chess Commune to popular the game chess among university

students.The tournament was held on 13th of July 2013 at University Gymnasium. Event was only open

to novice players in University of Peradeniya. So past or present university team members or past school

team players were not allowed to take part in this tournament. The event got big success and attention

and we were able to recognize some good players and joined them to our regular practices and events.

Pera Chess Annual Get Together – 2013

We organized this event to create an opportunity to all pera chess players and past pera chess players to

meet, have fun and share their experiences.

The event took place at University

Gymnasium on 24th of Saturday. It became

more functional event with crazy chess

tournaments, table tennis, net ball and etc.

It gave us great opportunity to improve our

relationships after long time.

Freshers’ Meet -2013

This year freshers’ meet became a very challenging event for every faculty. We could found many good

freshers to join our family.

Pera Challenge All Island InterSchool Chess Championship – 2013

We organized an All island interschool Open event from 4th of October to 6th of October at University

Premises. This became a very wonderful event for school players to play chess in salubrious university

environment and meet national level university players and share their experiences also. This became an

important event to school children because we introduced the match points system for the school

players for the first time. We had 37 school teams participation with many major schools in Kandy and

all over Sri Lanka. So approximately 200 students were participated to the event. There was a very

beautiful prize giving ceremony too with the present of Mr.Palitha Kumara , Director of Physical

Education Department and Ms. Amila Kapilarathne Master in-charge of Chess.

This year became a very successful year for Pera Chess although we had couldn’t achieve the gold

medals in slug we could perform well in many number of tournaments. And also we were able to do

some marvelous events and get-togethers as pera chess commune. We are very thankful to our

seniors who helped us lot with their advices, money, participation and so many things. Also we

would like to thank our master in-charge Ms. Amila Kapilarathna, who helped us lot in this difficult

journey. Our sincere thank goes to Mr. Palitha Kumara and all the staff members in physical

education department who helped us lot for the success of this year.

As past captain I would like to congratulate our new captains Chathura Rajapakse and Sakura

Abeysinghe. Hope they will be able to bring gold medals back to pera and wish all the best for a

fantastic year.
