Dear Friends:

21 years ago San Miguel School Chicago, started in the dining room of a convent in the Back of the Yards neighborhood with 18 students. Today, by God’s grace and faithfulness through friends like you, San Miguel School serves 90 Middle School students, 120 graduates attending high school through the Graduate Support Program and 600 members of the Back of the Yards neighborhood through our Family Support Program.

St. John Baptist de La Salle founded the Brothers of the Christian Schools in the late 17th century with a mission to educate the children of the poor and working class.. This mission is alive and well at San Miguel School today!

One of many heartfelt stories this year came from an 8th grade student:

At my old school a teacher hit me with a book because she thought I wasn’t paying attention. The kids would hit each other and create gangs in the classroom and it was like no one cared. But at San Miguel everything changed for me, the teachers care – I mean they actually take the time to figure out what is going on with me and the other kids - and now I want to grow up to become a lawyer. I am in the ambassadors club at San Miguel, my teachers think I am smart, that I am a leader and that I am a good kid”. Jenny, Class of 2016

Our many thanks to our friends who make the San Miguel School experience possible for Jenny and her class. Without you, it would not have been possible.

San Miguel School ended the 2015-2016 fiscal year in a healthy financial position (see page 7), added 6 new board members, launched an Auxiliary Board and started a formal Alumni Association (see cover photo). In the upcoming year our focus is to move from surviving to thriving (See page 19) .

Please know that your time, talent, and treasure are making a difference for our students and the entire Back of the Yards community. Thank you for your generous commitment. On behalf of the Board of Directors I would like to ask you to continue to join us in this upcoming year as San Miguel School Chicago continues to increase its impact in the Back of the Yards by providing a quality faith-filled education with preferential treatment to the poor and academically at risk.

Dear Donors:

San Miguel is a really wonderful school and it has changed me in many ways and I’m thankful for that. When I was in 6th grade I didn’t really want to come to San Miguel but by the end of 6th grade I was amazed and so happy that I got to go through all these amazing experiences and I found out it was all thanks to San Miguel and especially San Miguel’s sponsors. Without them we wouldn’t have this school and amazing experiences. I love this school and I’m happy that I got to come here and do all kinds of things especially go to trips that are unforgettable experiences that I have never seen before.

I have gone to many really fun field trips these three amazing years being at San Miguel. My favorite one has to be Dunrovin because it is adventurous and in nature and you get lots of time with your freedom. It is safe there and not a lot of noise. Teachers give you a lot of freedom and I like that. My second favorite field trip has to be Washington D.C because it was cool to see in real life about the country we live in that we learned about in class. We were with our friends and also had a lot of freedom. Also they took me to a place where I will probably never be able to go again. Finally, it would have to be Camp Gray because of all the amazing memories I made there with my friends. This is another reason I love this school because they take us places and trust us and gives us freedom. They treat us differently than ever before.

San Miguel has changed me in many different ways and without them I would not be the same. San Miguel has changed me by teaching me good manners. Mr. Smith taught me to say “may I please” and “thank you” and all those other ones. Also Mr. Chavez taught me how to be a gentleman by opening doors for the girls and that it is ladies first. Ms. Nava has taught me a lot of things too. I have grown to respect her and I really appreciate the love she has showed me these three years whenever I have something on my mind or something is going on she is always there and I appreciate that a lot. Plus, she used to go to San Miguel so she knows how it goes.

In conclusion, I’m very grateful for San Miguel and everything they do for me that most other schools wont. Also I’m very happy that I got to come here for 3 years. These years are something I will never forget. San Miguel is just an amazing school the way they treat you and welcome you in right away. We are all family and my older brothers went here and San Mgiuel still checks in on them. Also in the field trips they always encourage me try new things that I don’t really want to do but it ends up making me a better person.

MIDDLE SCHOOLContinue to uphold strong academic programs while further developing the STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) curriculum. San Miguel School will begin seeking opportunities to expand the student body to include a fifth grade.

GRADUATE SUPPORTThe Graduate Support Program will be extended through college. Getting students to and through post-secondary education is key for first-generation college students.

FAMILY and COMMUNITY SUPPORTComing Fall 2017! San Miguel Community Center. The Center will be open daily from 11am-7pm offering programs for students , graduates, family members, and other community members. More details coming!

ENGAGING PHILANTHROPIC PARTNERSRaising funds to support the Annual Budget and build a reserve.Engaging like-minded philanthropic partners.
