Message from the Director

Imagine what we can create.

Thank you for taking the time to read our ArtsErie annual report. We hope that the information it contains will help you better understand the many ways that ArtsErie supports the community. We had another busy year with grant making, research projects, advocacy, CultureSpark, and the $1.2 million Federal Department of Education grant.

Through Art in Action, the model arts education program funded by the Federal Department of Education, ArtsErie impacted the lives of elementary school children in Cambridge Springs, Meadville, and Union City. Read more about this broad-reaching arts integration program, the training involved, and the data being collected on page 10 of this report and check out http://artinaction.wikispaces.com.

In addition to the Art in Action program, ArtsErie was busy with two data collection projects: Arts & Economic Prosperity IV and the Local Arts Index. This was the third time that ArtsErie participated in Art and Economic Prosperity, a national economic impact study conducted every five years by the Americans for the Arts. Many thanks to all who willingly answered our audience surveys at arts events! ArtsErie also gathered data as part of a new study, the Local Arts Index. This study, based on the National Arts Index, will help set a benchmark for measuring the health and vitality of Erie’s non-profit and for profit arts industry. The results from both studies will be available in the next few months.

ArtsErie was fortunate to receive a workforce development grant from ReTool Erie to develop a new directory website for arts, culture, and heritage and an accompanying marketing plan as part of CultureSpark, the Erie County Cultural Master Plan. The site located at http://www.culturesparkerie.org is now up and growing daily.

ArtsErie board and staff were leaders in advocating for state budget funding for the PA Council on the Arts. I joined the board of the Citizens for the Arts in PA to ensure that Northwest PA had a voice on this statewide advocacy board as well as to be able to enhance advocacy efforts in our region. ArtsErie was also active in obtaining funding for regional assets through the Erie County Gaming Revenue Authority.

Finally, to position the organization for the future, the hardworking and dedicated ArtsErie board committed to an extensive self-evaluation of ArtsErie’s mission, programs, finances, marketing, and board/volunteer development. Thanks to Don Moore from Decision Associates for leading us in this endeavor. It’s exciting to work through this process and develop a plan for the future! Stay tuned!

Serving the Community

ArtsErie nurtures the arts and enriches the lives of everyone in Northwest Pennsylvania through leadership, financial support, education, and advocacy. By promoting the arts throughout the community, ArtsErie enables people to discover, experience, and enrich their lives through the arts in many varied forms. We educate our youth through artist residencies and support local artists and art organizations. And, we envision a community where access to the arts is open to everyone.

ArtsErie strives to be a catalyst for improvement and to create opportunities for all to enjoy and participate in the arts. Through a strategic planning initiative, the organization has evolved into its current role as an arts service provider for all of Erie County and beyond. Major programs include advocacy which has recently focused on state and federal arts budget issues and regional asset funding; facilitating artist residencies in an 11 county service area; providing education, visibility and networking to its members; providing leadership through the implementation of the new cultural plan; and offering financial support for arts organizations and projects through grants from the ArtsErie United Fund, the Erie Arts Endowment, and the PA Council on the Arts sponsored PA Partners in the Arts program.

Bringing the Arts to the Classroom

The Arts in Education Program places professional teaching artists in the classroom to work side by side with teachers integrating the arts into their curriculum. The program is made possible through the Arts in Education Partnership of the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts, a state agency funded by the citizens of Pennsylvania through annual legislative appropriation. The Pennsylvania Council on the Arts is supported by the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency. Matching funds are provided by the residency host, grants, and Educational Improvement Tax Credit contributions. Funding for some artist residencies was also provided through a significant Arts in Education Model Development and Dissemination Grant from the Department of Education.

In 2010-11 ArtsErie facilitated artist residencies totalling 1,083 days and $307,984 in funds.

Poetry Out Loud: National Recitation Contest – Participants

The National Endowment for the Arts and The Poetry Foundation created the Poetry Out Loud: National Recitation Contest to encourage high school students to learn about great poetry through memorization, performance, and competition.

ArtsErie notes the participation of these regional high schools in 2010-11:

ArtsErie and the PA Council on the Arts presented the 2011 regional competition, on Saturday February 19, 2011 at Allegheny College in Meadville, PA.

JillianJohannes, a student at Mercyhurst Prep, was selected as the winner of the regional finals for the Poetry Out Loud: National Recitation Contest.

KatelynBaker, a home-schooled student with the Western Pennsylvania Christian Orators, placed second.

Page 10 Art in Action

ArtsErie launched an ambitious and innovative arts-integration project called Art in Action in fall 2010. This four-year project integrates dance, music, visual arts, and drama into existing curriculum to enhance both the quality of teaching in the classroom, as well as student academic achievement and engagement in the learning process.

ProgressThrough Art in Action, school administrators, teaching artists and classroom teachers learned methods of arts-integration and collaboration. The pilot year included five teaching artist residencies, a graduate course offered through Edinboro University, a series of training sessions, and an arts-integration summer institute. By the end of the school year, Art in Action had initiated the transformation of 75 classroom teachers and 25 teaching artists; and re-engaged more than 400 elementary school students in learning through the arts.

KeyStone Research Corporation gathered data to evaluate the results of this first year, with respect to student performance, quality of teaching, and student engagement. Outofeightmeasuresreported,pilotdatashowsthatallbutoneoftheperformancemeasuresexceededthe70%targetforimprovementfrom before to after the residency and/or in comparison to a control group.

Resonating MomentsWhen a previously non-verbal student began to use verbal communication! —Special Education Teacher, Union City Elementary School

To see students blossom – self-conscious students took risks to problem solve or brainstorm. The “popular” kids came forward to encourage a shy student to participate or “create” a moment. It was a reverse of what I see in the classroom. —6th Grade Teacher, Second District Elementary School

With the pilot year complete, project participants – administrators, planning team members, classroom teachers, teaching artists and students – can testify to the building-wide cultural, transformational change that occurs through Art in Action.

In 1981, Clarence E. Beyers made a significant gift to ArtsErie to establish the Erie Arts Endowment. This gift, plus contributions from others such as Lydia McCain, has grown into an endowment valued at nearly $3.3 million in June 2011. The Erie Arts Endowment, along with the ArtsErie United Fund, provides funding for ArtsErie grants, awarded to community organizations offering performances and arts events throughout Erie County.

ArtsErie was awarded an Arts and Culture Capacity Building Grant of $65,000 from the prestigious Kresge Foundation of Troy, Michigan in late 2009.

The Kresge Foundation, a national foundation that has historically supported fund-raising campaigns to build capital projects, responded to the effects of the economic crisis on arts and culture through a new initiative designed to build the capacity of non-profit arts and cultural organizations in selected communities.

ArtsErie used the data collected through the CultureSpark cultural planning process to identify those areas of need, which, if addressed, could best benefit local arts and cultural organizations.

Five area arts and cultural organizations were selected to receive $31,000 in funds in the first round of ArtsErie Kresge Capacity-Building Grants in FY2010. The grant awards were designed to improve the organizational functioning for those funded.

The second round was conducted in FY2011, delivering $26,000 to seven arts and cultural organizations.

Grant awards were as follows:
