It was appropriate that this year, the first year of Girl Scouting’s second century, our council positioned itself to embrace the future head on by moving to a new home at 500 Greenwich Avenue in Warwick. Our staff relocated in May and, soon thereafter, we celebrated the milestone in style -- including a ribbon cutting ceremony and a council-wide party right in our new parking lot. We were joined by a very special guest, Anna Maria Chávez, CEO of GSUSA. Through a series of special events, Anna shared her enthusiasm for the Girl Scout Movement with girls, leaders, staff, donors and a special gathering of local women leaders. She even jumped behind the counter in the Girl Scout Shop and helped ring up purchases of Girl Scout merchandise!

The new building is cheerful and full of light and energy. And it’s been a delight to have a new, highly visible and centrally located space where girls and volunteers feel free to stop by and say “hello”. But, most importantly, we now have plenty of “girl space” – enough to launch a Girl Leadership Experience Center, where girls from all over southern New England will gather and share their experiences with women and girls from across our nation and throughout the world. With input from girls, volunteers, and local leading women, we were able to create a vision for this new space:

Our vision for the new Girl Leadership Experience Center is a girl-led hub of creativity, connectivity, exploration, and inspiration, brimming with energy and exchange. The Center will be a safe, accessible, and fun place where ALL girls can come to discover and celebrate the greatness in themselves, others, and the world around them.

We both look forward to writing to you again in a year’s time and detailing how this ambitious vision has become a reality – all for the benefit of the girls in our council. And, ultimately, the good of society.

Sincerely,

Kathryn L. Gann, PhDBoard Chair

Neil M. StampsCEO

THANK YOU!

The Girl Scouts of RI Chorus began with one goal in mind: to spread a love of music, singing, and friendship among Girl Scout troops and our communities. Directed by Krystle Poirier, and accompanied by Assistant Director Marilyn Ross, the GSRI Chorus began in 2012 with only 6 members. The chorus has grown to include over 20 current members, and has performed at a Providence Bruins hockey game, McCoy Stadium for the Paw Sox, and numerous sing-a-long workshops for local troops and service units.

During the fall, girls sold more than 29,000 candy and nut products, along with magazine subscriptions. Troops donated 1,073 candy and nut products to Operation Support Our Troops.

More than 740,000 packages of Girl Scout cookies were sold during the 2013 Girl Scout Cookie Sale, resulting in $451,000 of proceeds for troops

and $50,000 given back to girls for camp credits. The girls of GSRI chose the Gabrielle Dinsmore Heart & Hope Fund as the beneficiary of the Cookie Sale Community Service Project and collectively donated $6,300 to the Fund.

Rhode Island General Treasurer Gina M. Raimondo served as the Honorary Cookie Chair and helped girls make the connection between building strong money management and financial literacy skills with selling cookies. Troops were encouraged to get creative and decorate their booth sale locations for the first Bling Your Booth Contest. West Warwick Troop #439 took home the Cookie Cup Trophy.

In March, the Twenty-Sixth Annual Senior Leadership Conference was held at Salve Regina University in Newport, RI. Over 240 older Girl Scouts learned strategies to assist peers, manage stress and more. The theme of the weekend was “Investigate, Collaborate, Activate 2013.”

Members of the Rhody Rockets canoe team spent every Saturday in April and May practicing their paddling skills on Larkin Pond. Under the leadership of 19-year veteran coach Laurie Pansa, the team’s hard work paid off when it competed in the General Clinton Canoe Regatta during Memorial Day Weekend. Despite rain and temperatures in the 40s, the Rhody Rockets sprinted to the finish in several races.

In the spring of 2013, construction of GSRI’s new headquarters at 500 Greenwich Avenue in Warwick was completed. A ‘soft opening’ was held

2013 YEAR IN HIGHLIGHTS

in April to introduce GSRI’s Board of Directors and key volunteers to the new building. And in May of 2013, the new office was officially open for business.

In late June the council welcomed a special visitor, Anna Maria Chávez, CEO of GSUSA. Through a series of special events, Anna shared her enthusiasm for the Girl Scout Movement with girls, leaders, staff, donors and a special gathering of local women leaders. She also presided at a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the council’s new offices and Girl Leadership Experience Center.

Seventeen Girl Scout Gold Award recipients were honored on June 1 at a luncheon and ceremony at Rhodes on the Pawtuxet in Cranston, RI. Three of the recipients were also recognized as Young Women of Distinction, which provides scholarships to those girls whose Gold Award projects stood out

in the areas of creativity, impact and sustainability. April Marion Harff and Alison Jeffrey each received a $500 scholarship and Lindsay Gimple was awarded a $1,000 scholarship.

For the first time, our council also honored Silver Award recipients at the Gold Award Luncheon. Girls who received the highest award a Cadette can earn in 2012 received a special salute and had the chance to be inspired by their older sister Girl Scouts.

GSRI’s summer camp programs had another terrific year. A highlight for many girls was building courage while climbing a new mobile rock wall that traveled among the day camps. Girls at Camp Rocky Farm also got to enjoy archery for the first time, while campers at Hoffman tried their hand at frisbee golf and splashing into Larkin Pond via a new waterslide.

GSRI’s new headquarters, designed by Kite Architects, received a Silver Award for Architecture in re-purposing existing space from Rhode Island Monthly’s Best Of Rhode Island edition.

In January, when the apartment she shared with her Mom caught on fire, Junior Girl Scout Ashleigh C. was quick

to act. She yelled to wake her Mom up and made sure they both got out safely. In recognition of her courage, Ashleigh, from Woonsocket Troop 360, received a GSUSA Bronze Cross lifesaving award – presented when a girl has shown special heroism or has faced extraordinary risk of her own life to save another’s life.

At the end of September, GSRI welcomed our new CEO Neil M. Stamps. Neil, father of a Girl Scout alumna, came to GSRI with proven success in moving organizations forward by inspiring outstanding performance and superior customer focus.

On June 27, 2013, after more than 28 years of dedication and service to the girls and adult volunteers of our council, staff member Susan Santos, Assistant Executive Director, Girl & Adult Services, retired. To mark the occasion, friends and colleagues gathered to celebrate her many accomplishments and wish her well. Dan Webster and Ken Buteau handcrafted a very special keepsake: a box, hand-carved from fallen timber at Camp Hoffman. Donations in Susan’s honor were directed toward a scholarship fund for Girl Scouts from urban communities.

IN HONOR OF

BARBARA WELCH FRENCH, our council’s first president, passed away in February at the age of 97. According to

her daughter, Betsy Rowland, Barbara’s biggest passion was the Girl Scouts.

Barbara held every major position in our council, including treasurer, and was an honorary board member until her death. When Girl Scouts of Rhode Island needed a new treasurer, Barbara told the council’s CEO (in true Girl Scout fashion), “Well, I’ve held a number of Girl Scout offices, but I’ve never been treasurer. Let’s give it a try.” Barbara was a Girl Scout member for over sixty years.
