2018 DECATUR FAMILY YMCA
Annual ReportMORE THAN A GYM, WE’RE A CAUSE
2018 Annual Report
Dear Friends and Family of the Decatur Family YMCA,
It has been my pleasure to serve as Board Chair of the Decatur Family YMCA for the past two years. My thirty plus years of involvement with the YMCA includes parenting three children who participated in YMCA sports programs, realizing health benefits from my YMCA membership, and a total of 12 years involvement as a member of the YMCA Board of Directors. It has been rewarding and inspiring to witness the positive impact of YMCA programs on individuals and families in our community.
The Decatur Family YMCA strives to be innovative and collaborative in meeting the needs of our community in youth development and healthy living, to grow our membership and to position the Y as a cause-driven charity of choice. The Y’s leadership, staff and volunteers address these areas by conducting wellness programs targeting chronic disease such as Parkinson’s and providing assistance to cancer survivors through the Live Strong program. Their collaboration with community groups such as St. Johns Lutheran Church, Millikin University, Decatur Swim Club, First Christian Church and Crossing Healthcare has led to expanded programs for youth in after school programs, aquatics, school readiness and healthy living. A new partnership with Decatur Public Schools initiated a parent mentoring program to help parents participate and feel more welcome in their child’s school.
As we continue to move forward in 2019, the Decatur Family YMCA will embark on a new three-year Strategic Plan with a focus on teen development, increased youth programs at the YMCA Sports complex, and potential expansion of YMCA facilities and programming on-site and in the community.
Thank you to our CEO Matt Whitehead and his leadership team for their vision and dedication to the Y’s mission, to our Board members for their commitment and active participation, to our volunteers and friends of the Y for your contributions and loyal support. We could not make the Y a better Us without U!

A Letter From Our Board Chair
2018 Annual Report
In our dynamic and ever-changing world, the Decatur Family YMCA is dedicated to making a difference that directly matters to everyone. We bring communities together by innovatively developing programs to discover and develop the best in all of us.
2018 was a historic year for our Y. We reached an all-time high in program revenue and our number of members climbed well over 10,000 - the highest membership number in 10 years. We created opportunities for youth, adults, families and seniors of all backgrounds to explore and enjoy opportunities to learn, grow and thrive. From advocacy to aquatics, child care to camps, tutoring to sports, water safety to wellness, the Y strengthens our community with life-changing programs and services.
This year we plan to continue to develop new programs and enhance our existing ones through innovation and collaboration. We will enrich youth development, improve healthy living and ignite social responsibility. We will support and serve our neighbors to ensure everyone succeeds at every stage of life.
Of course, none of this would be possible without the support of our donors, members, volunteers and our staff. So thank you for your continued support and all you do for the Y. You truly make a difference.
Sincerely,
Matt R. Whitehead Chief Executive Officer

I wanted to start getting back into fitness, but I wasn’t sure how or where to start. I met a couple of instructors from the Y at a Zumbathon about 2 1/2 years ago. I thought I would try out a few of the classes. I loved the classes and the instructors. Because of their motivation, high energy and tons of support, I knew this is where I needed to be.
