CO-PASTOR, MARY GRAVES

Trinity spent the bulk of this year discerning whether or not to change their pastors’ terms of call from Pastor and Associate Pastor to Co-Pastors. Session was introduced to this idea in November 2017 and voted in December to: Approve that Mary, Kurt and Personnel continue the exploration, research, and practicality of a co-pastor relationship for the next 3 months to determine the following:

• Division of responsibility • Financial implications • Metrics for Success • Messaging to the Congregation (rationale)

At their March 20 meeting, Session, “considering the progress and success of the co-pastor experiment over the last three months,” approved moving forward with evaluating the model at a congregational level. This involved:

• Making this evaluation a strategic priority for the church in 2018; • Communicating this priority to the congregation at the March 25 congregational

meeting; • Implementing a communication plan to gather feedback and build consensus from the

congregation; • A congregational vote on October 7 followed by the vote of Committee on Ministry and

then Presbytery on November 13. This strategic priority was presented to approximately 100 people at the Congregational Meeting and then followed up by multiple ways of hearing and answering questions posed by the congregation, including FAQ’s on the website and in the email blast, two Town Hall meetings, and visits to all small groups and ministry teams. On October 7 a motion to change the terms of call was presented by Session to the congregation and was approved with 89 yes, 17 no, and 2 abstentions. On November 13 the same motion was presented to Presbytery and approved unanimously! Kurt and I are now your co-pastors, and I celebrate this change as I continue to grow into it. Our other strategic priorities in 2018 were:

• Growing small groups at Trinity; • Engaging issues of injustice.

Both of these priorities were advanced by the first of what will be an annual Miguel Mendez Peace & Justice Lectureship. We invited Dr. Soong-Chan Rah, author of Prophetic Lament, to conclude a Lenten preaching and small group series on the challenging book of Lamentations, which stretched us all in learning how to pray our laments. Our next small group series in the fall was on The Lord’s Prayer, so we have learned a lot about prayer this year!

Another high priority for Session this year has been deciding how to allocate the generous bequest of Jo Anne Finch, who left her entire estate to Trinity of over $1,100,000. The bequest was received in January, and in December Session voted to allocate the funds received according to the following percentages: Mission Projects (20%), Congregational Care (10%), Capital Improvements (35%), Perpetual Endowment (30%), Deferred (5%). Because of Jo Anne’s gift we were able to make some significant improvements to our sanctuary space in October, including renovated pews with cushions and livestreaming our worship service. One of my favorite parts of the year was our summer series on Mark Labberton’s book, Called. Each Sunday we heard from a different member of our church about their particular calling in life, and I loved meeting with them in advance to hear about their unique journeys. What a delightful congregation of loving saints we have!

CO PASTOR, KURT HEINEMAN

As I reflect on 2018, I’m struck by all the ways God showed up in the life of our congregation. I’d like to highlight a few in this Annual Report. We continued for a second year our priority of Addressing Issues of Injustice. When I take a bird’s eye view, this is the priority in our church that has both provided tremendous spiritual growth for us all, and also at the same time provided conflict within ourselves and our community. I’m reminded of Ben McBride’s visit to our congregation and the nuance he was able to provide for us, a vision of what it looks like to be a peacemaker in this world, to not be on one side of issues or the other side, but to stand in the middle, in the midst of the tension. Mainline churches like ours avoided these kinds of social conversations for a long time; we’re doing the hard work of learning, listening, and partnering together to form a new social imagination. A social imagination inspired by Jesus, and how he is calling us to live in the Peninsula and the world. Changing to the Co-Pastor model of ministry was also a huge effort and change in 2018. I was proud of Session, the Personnel Ministry Team, and the congregation for our process and the way everyone was involved in that big decision. We are embarking in strange lands now with a new form of pastoral ministry and all the more we rely on Jesus who sends us with this new model of ministry. I helped lead an effort from 2017-2018, to update the Sanctuary. It was a lengthy process and in the end I’m so excited about the many changes to our space of worship. We have a sanctuary that is welcoming to persons of all ability and disability, the sound system is fixed, a space for parents of young children to remain in worship, technology upgrade to Livestream our worship services, new pews with upholstered seats. These changes have modernized our space and the updates will be helpful for years to come. The Livestream of our worship is new ministry for our church, and we are only in the very beginning phases of seeing the impact of this ministry. Another amazing thing happened last year, which was that a few leaders and students from Siena Youth Center joined us on the Mexico Mission Trip. It was so great to see how God has already been at work in our two organizations and further our connection through this trip. I think we both have a sense that our partnership is strong and God is very present in our relationships. Though these are just a few of the large scale things that happened in 2018, I’m also mindful of the small things too. Laughs at GGA, a softball championship, prayers and scripture readings in the hospital, book studies for sermons, staff meetings, an amazing Worship in the Park, baptisms, worship filled with beauty and the delight of the Lord! Ministry takes many shapes and forms, but it is the same Lord who is made known in our midst. Pastor Kurt

The Buildings & Grounds Ministry is grateful for its support and the opportunity to serve. We continued to focus on improvements, upgrading areas as needed and making general repairs. Many thanks to the Team and all who have helped.

2018 was an exciting and busy year for the Buildings & Grounds Ministry. In addition to the regular repairs expected with our facility we were blessed with the opportunity to complete several important projects and prepare for the future as well.

Some of the things accomplished this year include:

• The Sanctuary Project which included: pew refinishing with new upholstery, concrete floor refinishing and resealing, new carpet, reconfiguring seating to give a flexible family friendly space in the left transept as well as additional wheel chair access space, remodel the access to the platform from the ramp and refinish the wood work, modify the charter room including the addition of a changing table to create a comfortable space for nursing mothers, assisted the installation of a new audio video live feed production system complete with new UHD monitors for the nursery, charter room and narthex.

• Repaired lower level education wing exterior walls and doorways. Those repairs and modifications including termite remediation have resolved a long-term problem of water penetration.

• Repaired, rebuilt and re-roofed the mid-level entrance flat-roof awning. • Repair, rebuilt and re-roofed the Fellowship Hall / Atrium entrance flat-roof awning and added

new exterior LED flood lighting. • Added new auto programmable lighting controls for the Brittan Ave entrance. • Installed new doors and closers to the education wing • Completed work to bring facility in compliance with fire safety inspection • Major grounds and landscape cleanup and some repairs and evaluation to sprinkler system.

facility.

Some areas currently being reviewed or on the agenda for this year and beyond include:

• Retrofitting the hot water boiler plant that provides primary heating for the Church. • Education wing packaged AC unit and exhaust fan replacement. • Possibilities for cooling the Sanctuary in the hot summer months. • Painting for the Education wing and areas as needed. • Repair and repaving the parking lot.

Special Thanks to the sanctuary update committee (Jim Boso, Victoria De Salles, Kurt Heineman, Rod Lehr, Julie Pope, Grace Schulz, Jenee Van Hofwegen, Kristan Verveniotis), to Robert Parker a special contractor with the assistance of Walt of ASIS without whose dedication and availability the water remediation work could not have been completed, and especially to Victoria De Salles without whose coordination and efforts the years ambitious schedule of work could not have been accomplished.

CHILDREN’S MINISTRY

After experimenting with a new meeting structure in 2017, Children’s Ministry Team faced 2018 with the challenges of the hectic pace of life for our families. We were able to meet as a team only three times and realize that the committee model we’ve used for many years has become more and more difficult to sustain. We spent time evaluating programs and events and realize that just because we’ve always done something doesn’t mean it will be effective. Considering the challenges, we’re happy to report that we have sustained five age-graded Sunday classes, mission-learning opportunities, thematic activity packets for last Sunday worship, fellowship events, formational classes for families, equipping opportunities for parents as they nurture their children in the faith. In the recent past, Trinity’s ministry teams have been engaging in "round table" or "collaboration" gatherings where invested folks gather to brainstorm around liturgical themes and/or church priorities. From these gatherings, fresh ideas and energy emerge for combining resources and working together. Examples of events that have come from these gatherings in 2018 are Parent Night Out (Sticky Faith, CM, Worship); Trunk or Treat (Sticky Faith, CM, TPP, Men's Bible Study); and Sunday School Mission emphasis (Global and Community Outreach, CM). All have been well resourced and well received by those involved. Building on these successes, CMT will move away from our former committee meeting model in order to leverage the collaborative process that is emerging throughout Trinity's ministry teams. Because we value an inter-generational, family model for CM, it makes sense to be involved in these larger conversations. It also allows individuals to invest time and energy in areas they're passionate about. We like to call it "passion-driven" ministry (what do we have resources/energy for) as opposed to "program-driven" (build it and they will come). If there's passion around an idea, then it's more likely to be a positive experience for everyone!

Key components of Sticky Faith are involving children and youth in the whole life of the church and equipping parents to be faith nurturers. This past year, through collaboration with the sanctuary refurbishing committee, we took a huge step towards both:

• The open space in the transept allows parents to feel welcome to bring their babies and wiggly little ones into worship with feeling confined. It also offers space for worship stations when appropriate

• The books and fidgets allow those who have difficulty focusing or have special needs an opportunity to be included and feel welcomed

• The Worship Guide for Families that is in the pew rack details each element of our order of worship, explains why we do it and challenges them to notice and participate

• The Charter room off the narthex was redesigned, complete with streaming worship video to accommodate nursing mothers

As we move into 2019, we do so excited about this highly collaborative model. We hope that it will make it accessible for you to engage with our children and youth without a long commitment. Those who have an idea for integrating children into their ministry or want to be involved in a single event or class are welcome! There are many ways to be involved with our kids to help them become more like Jesus!

CLERK OF SESSION

Session for 2018 consisted of ten ruling Elders and two teaching Elders (Co-Pastors). The position of Clerk of Session was filled by Jerry Richey for the year. All other Elders served as a liaison to one or more of our 13 ministry teams. We held Regular Session meetings each month other than July when we held a Called Session meeting. Other meetings included:

• Congregational Meetings were held on March 25 (Annual) and October 7th (vote to amend terms of call forming a co-pastorate at Trinity.)

• Session met with New Members on March 11, July 10 and December 16th and received a total of 16 new members into the Trinity Presbyterian Church family.

• The Session Deacon & Elder Meeting occurred on April 17th.

In 2018, Trinity focused on three strategic priorities: Engaging Issues of Injustice; Small Groups – starting and growing in commitment level; and evaluating the establishment of a Co-Pastorate and taking appropriate action. These goals were carefully formed with the hopes of improving communication within our congregation, supporting growth of our congregation’s intergenerational body, and aiding each member of our congregation in their own personal journeys toward growth in spiritual formation. At the December 18 Session meeting the Elders reviewed these priorities. Regarding the change to a co-pastorate, the Elders believe the process followed by Trinity in making this change was positive. They also discussed how the team effort relied on good communication and involved many Trinity members. Regarding small groups the Elders noted the spiritual formation team’s deep engagement and passion. The Elders expressed positive experiences with the format used in the two six week small group series this year. The Elders also discussed the extensive number of people active in small groups at Trinity and how to expand member involvement in small groups in 2019. Regarding engaging issues of injustice, the elders noted this priority is more a part of the culture at Trinity than it has been and members have an increased interest in learning about the subject. The Elders discussed the best way to serve those in need. It was noted this initiative aligns with the spiritual goal of “knowing Jesus so intimately that we become like him.” Through the year the Elders discussed with gratitude the generous bequest by Jo Anne Finch. At the December 18 meeting, the Elders decided on how these funds are to be allocated among the various ministries of Trinity. Trinity is represented by four presbytery commissioners during meetings of the San Francisco Presbytery, with Keith Crockett, Tom Davids, and Mary Graves. The fourth position was filled as a rotating position by volunteer Elders of our congregation. It has been a privilege to have served Trinity as Clerk of Session this past year. Deborah Kemper is serving as Clerk in 2019 and she is doing an excellent job. Trinity will benefit in numerous ways from her exceptional gifts and service. I wish her the best. Submitted by, Jerry Richey

COMMUNITY OUTREACH

Last January, Presbytery asked our Community Outreach Ministry Team to estimate HOW MANY people had been helped in some way by us and our supported ministries. It seemed like a strange request – we had never thought in those terms before. Eventually, our estimate had grown to 4,800 individuals. That’s the impact that COMT and all of our volunteers had on the community in 2017! Suffice to say, we were equally active (and more) in 2018.

First of all, I want to send a big THANK YOU to my hard-working and committed team members: Debby Brown, Sally McClure, Rosa Molero, Scott McMullin, Sallie Stalzer, Pam Tenn – and especially Cathy Lehr! It is impossible for me to overstate the work that Cathy does on behalf of COMT and Trinity. She’s awesome. We also added several great new volunteers to our team: Carolyn Boynton, Sara Cowey, Carol Dudick-Nicholas, Marcia McNamara, Mindy Pearce, Rosemary Stevenson, & Horst Stohrer.

We invite all Trinity members to join us in working with our primary & secondary mission partners: FISH, Hope House, Redwood High School, Second Harvest, Sequoia Village, SOS, St Francis/Siena, Street Church, Help One Child, Latinos Unidos en Christo, Puente, and SpiritCare. Some of 2018’s activities: • At Redwood: Teacher appreciation event, donations to teachers, provided ushers & food service

at their graduation, hosted a holiday party for students & staff, met with new Principal & Vice-Principal, delivered snacks & fresh fruit for students, attended ribbon-cutting for new buildings, included TAPP babies on the Angel Tree.

• At St Francis/Siena: held a fund drive for student scholarships, provided on-scene volunteers for their daily operations, food donations, including a large supply of macaroni-&-cheese.

• At SOS: monthly food preparation & delivery to needy families, distributed hygiene kits (donated by Street Church)

• At Sequoia Village: numerous volunteers – drivers, dispatch staff • At Street Church: along with deacons, we provided monthly meals for homeless, donated gift

card for small purchases like socks; they received a lot of clothing from our garage sale • At Hope House: large gardening & fence-painting event in connection with San Carlos Day of

Service • At Second Harvest: held a fund drive to support their operations – Second Harvest says it now is

better for them to receive money that they will use to purchase food • At Home & Hope: hosted two weeks of homeless guests; regrettably, we have discontinued our

support of Home & Hope due to their faulty operations. We felt their organizational issues cannot be readily fixed and that they are no longer a fit for us.

> Matthew 25 Challenge & Mission Faire – highlighted all of our ministries

> Alternative Gift Opportunity – raised over $7,000 for COMT & GOMT ministries Last, but not least: our own PAM TENN was honored with the Sequoia Union High School District’s Volunteer of the Year Award!!

Respectfully submitted, Mike Garoutte, Team Leader

CONNECTIONS

Team Members: Astrid Block, Keith Crockett, Karen Gernand, Kurt Heineman, Alicia Ledwith, Ryan Lee, Denise Morones, Julie Pope, Carol Raisner and Lori Taylor The Connections team was involved in many aspects of the church, fostering connections for long time members, new members and newcomers. In 2018 our focus remained on partnering and contributing where needed to nurture member relationships with God, church and each other. The Connections team continued to place emphasis on the new member process, hosting membership brunches in March, June, and November; and sitting with Session members alongside interested people as the Ministry team explored faith and the meaning of church membership with these attendees. From those brunches we were thrilled to welcome 16 amazing new members to our Trinity family this year. In supporting connections and fellowship throughout the Trinity community, the Connections team also hosted the Annual Meeting, a Pentecost Potluck, and the August summer ice cream social, and Worship in the Park at Twin Pines Park in Belmont. The team also lent its support to the inaugural “Trunk-or-Treat” and “Thanksgiving at Trinity” events. The team continued its mission of supporting Sunday services by welcoming attendees, promoting name-tags, approaching newcomers with friendly welcome bag, and establishing the “Trinity Post Office” for postcards between members when someone has been missed at church. A key focus during the second half of 2018 was the Trinity Pictorial Directory for 2019. Many coordination points were required to facilitate the scheduling and execution of over 160 photo sessions, as well as member contact information and data verification. The Connections teams continued mission is to promote member and visitor engagement at services and beyond. At our meetings we thoughtfully consider ideas to bring people together in a way that promotes Trinity’s mission and core values. Our team welcomes anyone interested in contributing to this process or who has ideas of ways that we can continue to develop and grow relationships within our church family.

BOARD OF DEACONS

The Presbyterian Church (USA) says in the Book of Order that, “The office of Deacon is one of sympathy, witness and service after the example of Jesus Christ. It is the duty of Deacons, first of all, to minister to those who are in need, to the sick, to the friendless, and to any who may be in distress both within and beyond the community of faith.” Deacons are members of Trinity’s congregation who believe the Lord has called them to this ministry of service and accept the commissioning by the Session. 2018 Trinity Team

Leadership Training 2018 started off with a bang at our annual retreat where we deepened relationships through fellowship, singing and prayer. Our time of learning brought us closer to our spiritual goals of “knowing Jesus so intimately that we become like him.” Deacons Table For two years, we’ve been hosting a table in Fellowship Hall once a month to raise awareness of our ministries. Members of the congregation have an opportunity to get information, ask questions and sign up to help throughout the year. Online Resources Our Deacons documents are included in a shared Google folder, and include the Roster, Calendar of Events, Homebound List, Handbook, Flowers & Visitation List and Expense Reimbursement. This allows everyone easy access to important documents and lets us make changes online. Deacons & You Sundays There were two opportunities for Deacons to shine as leaders of the church during worship. These Sundays involved our team in all aspects of worship and we invited the congregation to participate in our ministries. On May 13th, Christina Pearson and Elizabeth Tenn, through the Children’s message, explained the various roles of the Deacons to the congregation. On October 21st, Ken Kilen & Jane Brinson kicked off the Holiday Sharing season. At both of these events, the bulletin’s blue tear-off card was changed to list Deacon Ministries and contact information. Supporting Trinity In addition to coordinating all our various ministries, Deacons support the life of the church in several other ways. We organized dinner in March for the Mexico Mission Team which included the

youth, advisors and their prayer partners. We also attended the Deacons and Elders meeting in April where we had planning and visioning discussions about Trinity. Finally, in September, the Deacons held a brainstorming session about ways to better serve Trinity and fulfil our duty to serve both Trinity and the greater community. Engaging in Issues of Injustice Investing in Our Children and Youth in the Extended Community

Rafael Avendano is passionate about guiding young members of our community and oversees a mentorship program at Siena Youth Center. The Deacons visited the Siena Youth Center in October to learn more about the ways the center is able to provide for the youth in the nearby community.

Bringing Life into Alignment with the Way of Jesus The last third of our bequest will help address issues of injustice which is one of the top priorities of the church going forward. Jesus always fought for the poor, the suffering and the oppressed, and he instructs us to “act justly and love mercy and walk humbly with your God.” (Micah 6:8) Education is key, so the Deacons paid to bring Soong-Chan Rah, pastor, professor and author of “Prophetic Lament,” to Trinity to speak about social justice issues.

GLOBAL OUTREACH

Our Mission Statement: We nurture a passion for sharing the love of Christ by being the hands and feet of Jesus; we seek to inspire all ages in our congregation to fulfill Christ’s calling to serve people throughout the world. To fulfill this purpose, the Global Outreach Mission team uses prayerful discernment to:

• Select and support global mission partners who align with Trinity’s mission, core values and spiritual goals;

• Serve as a liaison between the Trinity congregation and our global mission partners; • Steward Trinity’s resources for global mission to what the Lord requires of us “To act justly,

to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God” (Micah 6:8). Trinity’s Global Outreach Ministry team developed this mission statement during 2018 as a guide to discern how Christ wants Trinity to be the “hands and feet of Jesus” in the world.

• Mission Partners: Trinity continues to provide budgetary and other support for six global mission organizations including:

1. World Vision: Child sponsorships and community building in Romania 2. Village Enterprise: Micro grants for small businesses in Kenya and Uganda 3. Mark and Ruthie Stoscher in Albania: “House of Hope” for children without

parents, summer camp program and “Torchbearers” adult bible school 4. Mission Aviation Fellowship: Trinity supports John Woodberry, MAF’s Manager of

Disaster Response 5. Global Aids Interfaith Alliance (GAIA): Healthcare and Nurse training in Malawi,

Liberia and South Africa 6. Amor Ministries: Amor is our partner for the high school Mexico Trip to build

houses

Trinity also provided a special gift to the IRC (International Refugee Committee) that was matched twice (by our Presbytery and by Old First Presbyterian in San Francisco) to support refugee programs.

• Sharing with our Congregation: We were delighted to welcome representatives from

several mission partners to Trinity during 2018. o Jon Wilson, COO of Amor Ministries, visited in February: Jon shared how Amor’s

focus to hire local people to build houses will provide jobs to those in the community. o Karen Fergusen, Executive Director of the IRC, visited in March: Karen described

the “Vision Project” camps where, for the first time in their lives, refugee girls can learn about college, careers, and goal setting.

o Melanie Periera, Board Member from GAIA, visited in September: Melanie talked about how the Nursing Scholars Program in Malawi improves health outcomes and empowers women to support their families.

o Mark Stoscher from Albania visited in December: Mark described the “House of Hope” in Albania where he and his family live with and nurture several troubled children who cannot live with their parents.

• High School Mission Trip to Mexico: In spring break 2018, a group of high school students and adult volunteers went to Mexico to build houses for the poor. Trinity’s decades long partnership with Amor to offer this trip is remarkable and shows no signs of slowing. The students and adults built homes for those in need and learn how they can make a difference by being the hands of Christ. Scores of volunteers make this trip happen ranging from helping with the huge annual fundraiser garage sale to becoming prayer partners with the students. The youth and adults that went on the trip shared their experiences with the congregation after the trip.

• Matthew 25 Challenge: This week-long initiative, held in November, was sponsored by

World Vision. Challenges were sent by text to the cell phones of those that registered. Examples of challenges were to sleep on the floor or drink only water that day. The goal was to help us all gain some empathy for the poorest of the poor by walking in their steps.

• Mission Fair: At the end of the Matthew 25 Challenge, a Mission Fair was held in Fellowship Hall so our congregation could learn more about the missions Trinity supports. Global Outreach also offered World Vision Child Sponsorship signups as well as the opportunity for those who already sponsor a child to write a card to their sponsored child that was hand drawn by our Sunday School children.

• Alternative Gift Opportunities Event: Global Outreach again partnered with Community Outreach to host the Alternative Gift Opportunities event during December. The AGO provides an opportunity for congregation members to make donations to Trinity’s missions through “purchasing” cards they can send friends or family to inform them that a financial gift was made in their honor. The AGO was welcomed with much enthusiasm by the congregation many of whom were weary of trying to find gifts for those they know that don’t need or want anything. Over $7K was donated to local and global missions through the AGO making this event a great success.

• Foundation Grants for Global Mission Partners: We are delighted to report that grants

were approved, and funds were issued in 2018 by the Trinity Foundation to two of our Mission Partners. The first grant for $28,600 was a 4 year grant for World Vision Romania’s “I want in the 9th grade” program. This grant enables 7 teens to go to high school and is being disbursed in 4 annual payments. The other grant for $3.4K was to Mark and Ruthie Stoscher in Albania so they could provide treatment to two of the “House of Hope” children who have significant orthodontia issues.

• World Vision Romania Update: During 2018, World Vision notified us that our partnership with World Vision Romania will be coming to an end by 2022 as World Vision Romania will move to be supported from within Romania It also reflects World Vision’s decision to focus on the poorest of the poor. Many congregation members that sponsor children in Romania or know the World Vision staff in Romania will feel a great sense of loss. But we know Christ is at work in this situation and will guide us as we continue our support for World Vision Romania during these last few years.

LEADERSHIP AND NOMINATING

The Leadership & Nominating team is tasked with identifying members of the church who have the spiritual maturity and unique gifts needed to serve in a leadership role at Trinity at this time. We take this task seriously and prayerfully seek to discern who God may be calling into the important work of leading the church as an Elder or Deacon. Many factors must be considered in discerning God’s calling into leadership at this important time in the life of the church. Among them are:

• Indications that the person is actively seeking to know and follow Jesus Christ. • The level of enthusiasm and interest in the ministry and priorities of the church. • The person’s faithfulness, integrity, leadership, and ability to use their gifts as a part of the

body of Christ. The L&N team nominated the following candidates to serve a three year term beginning in 2019. These candidates were then enthusiastically elected by the congregation.

Deacon 2019-2021 Elder 2019-2021 Carol Dudick-Nicholas Jim Boso Anderson Goodwin Mark Gerhardt Christian Halden Deborah Kemper Suzanne Wilsey Sabine Won

2018 Leadership & Nominating team included the following people:

• Deborah Kemper (Chair) • Holly Hayashida • Karen Molinari • Mary Nissen (Session Liaison) • Bill Taylor • Sabine Won

Please continue to pray for the important work of the Leadership and Nominating team, and for our Session and Deacons. Respectfully submitted, Holly Bride Hayashida

MUSIC MINISTRIES

Churches nationwide are experiencing shifts in their Music Ministry due to our changing culture…Trinity is no different. There are many factors involved in this change and most have to do with larger trends than we cannot control. Church membership and demographics, budgetary concerns, competition from other worthwhile activities and the hectic pace of life all have an effect on the commitment needed to run a “traditional” church music program. With this reality, Trinity’s music ministry focuses on supporting the vision and priorities of our congregation by developing accessible opportunities for the musical gifts and people of our congregation. We strive to engage people of all ages in the music of the church to the glory of God. Highlights of 2018 include:

• Individuals and small groups offered solos, duets, trios and quartets and stepped out of the crowd to use their gifts.

• The Chancel Choir remained steadfast in their dedication to leading throughout the year. • Amazing accompaniment was provided for congregational and choral music by Peter Slavin

(Jan-Mar), Christine Kagiyama (Mar-Dec), Grace Schulz and Christiaan Dekter. • A blend of many styles was provided by the Worship Band: Kenji Obadice, David

Satterwhite, Bob Boynton, Ken Kubiak, Grace Schulz, Craig Morey and Heidi Kim. • Danny Bridgens and our own Gerardo Garcia joined us on the platform bringing their

strengths for worship leading. • Chancel Bells played several times during Advent, Christmas and Easter with the leadership

assistance of Marcia Granucci and Cynthia Richey. • Joyful Noise children’s choir led worship with energy and the “cute factor.” • Hand Chimes, a new ensemble for 4th-5th graders, made their debut with much excitement. • The inter-generational Advent musical brought together readers, singers, musicians and

ringers ages 4 and older. • Royal Court Brass joined our worship celebrations at Easter and Christmas.

Our worship has been enhanced by many folks helping us see and hear and read with the use of audio/visual media technology.

• Sound Techs: Brian Mojica, Dave Umbenhaur , Will Jackson and Jonathan Cowles. • Media Team: Danny Vincent, David Gorbet, Jim Gernand, Leslie Rose, Phil Hayashida and

Drew Schulz. • New Livestream Video Production: Kurt Heineman, Cliff Kemper, Tom Finlayson, Josh Won,

Anderson Goodwin. As we move into a new year, we look back in gratitude for the many ways God has blessed us, and we look forward in anticipation to see where God will lead Trinity’s Music Ministry. In His Service, Kristan Verveniotis

PRESCHOOL 2017-18: SCHOOL YEAR IN REVIEW

The preschool continues to flourish and have great success in both staff and family retention. 2018 marks our 60th anniversary; a benchmark that clearly sets us apart from other preschools in the area. We continue to serve families throughout San Mateo County and have seen an increase in diversity among our school community. BEST PRACTICES AND CHALLENGES The Preschool has effectively analyzed the needs and preferences of our parent community and has seen much success in the recent years with program enhancements and modifications; o In September 2016, the addition of an afternoon Twos class continues to allow us to accept

additional families in to our Twos program. The 12:30 – 2:30 timeframe has some potential applicants concerned about nap time and full enrollment continues to be a challenge. No enrolled families have left due to nap concerns. For 2019-2020, we will be shifting the class time to 3:45 to 5:45 and location, to Trinity House. A minimum of ten students will be required.

o Transitional Kindergarten continues to present direct competition. Children born between September 2 and December 1 are eligible to attend M-F programs, for free. The majority of our eligible families opt for this instead of enrolling in our Pre-K classes due to finances or family schedule preference

The PAB’s scope of responsibility includes discussion and action regarding TPP community events and planning, capital improvements, the annual budget and personnel issues. The board meets monthly with minutes taken at all meetings. The board comprises nine members with specific duties allocated to each role. The 2018-2019 PAB members are as follows. Chair: Bernice O’Connor; Secretary: Taylor Simon; Parent Communications & Activities: Jennie Romeo; Treasurer: Amalie Verali; Capital Improvements: Kathryn Boberg; Community Outreach & Education: Danielle Rajani; Public Relations: Mia Moretti; Strategic Development: Dani Lucia; Social Events: Brooke Sibley, Samantha Dollard ACCREDITATION The preschool has been proudly accredited by the NAEYC (National Association of Early Childhood Education) since 1987. Accreditation requires a comprehensive review of our class offerings every five years and we are currently in the middle of re-accreditation. This very time consuming process requires participation and collaboration by teachers across all programs and falls on top of their normal curriculum planning. During the 2017-2018 school year, our Accreditation was renewed for a five year term in 2018. FUNDRAISING As a general policy, we opt to focus on community social events and strategic development (eScrip, grant writing, pursuit of corporate matching funds, etc.) rather than outright fundraising initiatives. The focus on social events has been well received by our families and continues to build a strong sense of community; our number one priority. COMMUNITY OUTREACH PAB supports Ten Books a Home, Redwood City / San Mateo County Toy and Book Drive (Toyland), St. Francis/Siena Youth Center. As need warrants, we will elect to support additional outreach efforts. This year, we supported victims of the Camp Fire; gift cards were collected and donated to teachers and students affected from Paradise Elementary School. The donations were delivered to their satellite campus in Oroville, CA.

COMMUNITY INREACH o We held a successful Back to School social at the beginning of the year to build community. o In December, our Social Events chairs hosted the 3rd annual “Gingerbread House Making Party” in

Fellowship Hall. In addition, children and their parents met in the church Sanctuary for a “Come and Cuddle” where the nativity story was told by either Pastor Mary or Pastor Kurt.

o In Spring, we will host our beloved Ice Cream Social. New families joining our school the following year are invited to attend and meet current families

o Bernice O’Connor, our Church Communications Chairperson promotes church events routinely. o Our Class Coordinators host “Mom’s Night Out,” parent events and family events throughout the

year.

TUITION ASSISTANCE FUND This fund is available to assist families experiencing unexpected and temporary financial hardship. LOOKING FORWARD: ENROLLMENT Our 2019-20 enrollment is underway and we will host the New Family Lottery on February 1. CAPITAL IMPROVEMENTS / REPAIRS Our buildings and grounds are reflecting their age and unfortunately, we are faced with a number of large repairs. We will be coordinating with Session on a plan to complete these items, in line with our By-Laws. o Trinity House Furnace – replace (requires tearing out flooring and re-routing duct work and

intake) - $8,000 o Trinity House Playground Retaining Wall - Replace with concrete (wood wall has pitched due to

heavy rain flow last winter) ~$30,000 o Trinity House Foundation Slip – $20,000 o Threes (Church) Classrooms Water Seep – Replace carpets - $20,000 We are confident the progress and efforts outlined above will further increase our school enrollment and allow financial sustainability for our school. Our staff and board remain passionately dedicated to the mission of Trinity Presbyterian Preschool and cultivating a lifelong love of learning for our children! Submitted faithfully by

Bernice O’Connor PAB Board Chairperson

PERSONNEL MINISTRY TEAM

Staff continuity During 2018, Trinity has been blessed with great continuity in our staff, and who work so well together. At the start of the year, we said farewell to Peter Slavin, our accompanist, and welcomed Christine Kagiyama. Having grown up in the Presbyterian Church, Christine has been an excellent addition to our team, bringing her passion for music to choir rehearsals and worship on Sunday mornings. Parish Associate In 2018, Ian Hamilton formally joined Trinity as our Parish Associate. In his role, Ian supports the pastors, as needed, in everything from assisting with worship on Sunday mornings to performing pastoral care. Ian has a long-standing relationship at Trinity and we are blessed to have him and Kim so actively involved in the life of our congregation. Co-pastor experiment Without a doubt, the highlight of the year for the Personnel Ministry Team was the experiment of the co-pastor model by Mary and Kurt, which culminated in the approval by Session, the congregation, and ultimately the Presbytery, to modify the terms of call for Kurt and Mary to become our co-pastors. We are so thankful the many and complementary gifts they both bring to us at Trinity and are eager to see them embrace their new roles in 2019. Membership of PMT Thank you to Jim Boso! Jim served us during 2018 and will be joining Session in 2019. We are very excited by the two recent additions to our team - Jamie Holden and Wayne Pitcher. And, a huge thank you to Marybeth D’Souza and Mark Gerhardt for all of the time and effort they have contributed during what was a very busy year for PMT! Katie Wechsler and Drew Schulz, co-team leads, are grateful for a fantastic ministry team, including Mary Graves as Head of Staff and Karen Gernand, our Session Liaison. SPIRITUAL FORMATION

The Spiritual Formation Team (SFT) certainly felt God’s presence in 2018, as we worked to fulfill our purpose statement “To facilitate the process of becoming more like Jesus with a current focus on developing and supporting small groups.” SFT members include Kay Chen, Marjory Barkhau, Jane Brinson, Mary Graves, Leslie Kriesel, Kathy Morey and Pat Brown; the team is co-led by Phil Hayashida and Karen Stine. Analyzing the feedback from the small group survey in early 2018, we learned the importance of personal invitation to small groups and that the timing, make-up, and focus of small groups at Trinity is quite varied. A SFT organized potluck of small group leaders and session members, also emphasized a deep desire for fellowship and personal connection across all small groups. In March, one highlight was the small group series on Lamentations and the well-received Saturday Q&A session with Soong-Chan Rah and the following sermon in worship. Feedback on the Lamentation series indicated that the study of Lamentations was both challenging and meaningful, and small groups seem to have particularly appreciated making the posters of Lament. In June, some small groups purchased and used the SFT recommended “Called” book by Mark Labberton for reading and discussion regarding the Crisis and Promise of Following Jesus Today. Also during the summer, a small group leadership circle met to learn and experience how to better facilitate small groups. In fall 2018, we saw a first time collaboration of Session and the Spiritual Formation team to provide curriculum for the six week small group series on the Lord’s Prayer. Also in 2018, we saw the start of Women’s Connection After Dark and Lectio Divina group where members are feeling blessed through the relationships that are being made. SFT was pleased to help get the word out on the Matthew 25 Challenge in November, and some participants learned that sleeping on the floor is more “challenging” as we age. Small groups will continue to be the focus in 2019 starting with a small group series related to the book “The Very Good Gospel” by Sharon Lisa Harper. The team is looking forward to consolidating the progress made in 2018 with a key goal of determining longer term framework for sourcing small group curriculum. Karen Stine and Phillip Hayashida

STEWARDSHIP AND FINANCE

All Christians are but god’s stewards. Everything we have is on loan from the lord, entrusted to us for a while to use in serving him. – John MacArthur 2018 Financial Update: For the first time in about ten years Trinity ended the year with a deficit; we closed 2018 with a loss of $21,312. By comparison, we exited 2017 with a surplus of $30,267. Income was off plan by $62K and off last year by $61K. Expenses came in below plan by $41K which helped to soften the impact of the income shortfall. The major areas responsible for the lighter expense load were Staff Compensation for Non-Pastoral staff, Building and Ground Maintenance Expense and Office Expenses. Expenses in 2018 totaled $732,558 which was slightly lower than 2017 at $741,987. Income in 2018 totaled $711,246 vs $772,255 in 2017. Benevolences In 2018, the Trinity Community contributed $221,048 to various global and local missions. 63% came from existing Trinity financial sources (our operating budget and savings), the remainder came from specific donations by the Trinity family. 2018 benevolence spending exceeded 2017 levels by $22,189. Capital Improvements (Buildings & Grounds) During 2018, Trinity made $181K of capital improvements in our facilities. $140K was spent on the Sanctuary Improvement, $ 33K was spent on the Ed wing remediation and $8K was spent on misc. improvements to exterior doors and patio roofs. The Sanctuary improvements were funded by a bequest for Jo Anne Finch’s estate. The rest of the improvements were funded from B&G trust accounts. Notable Bequest In 2018, Trinity was the sole beneficiary of the Jo Anne Finch estate. We received $1.1m of a total expected gift of $1.3M. In June, Session allocated 15% to the Sanctuary Improvement Project. In December, Session finalized the allocation of the rest of the gift as follows: 30% to the Endowment & Support Fund, 20% to Missions, 20% for future Capital investments, 5% for the Miguel Mendez Lecture Series, 5% for Congregational Care and 5% Unallocated. Discernment groups will be convened to further decide on the actual use of the money. The Balance Sheet (Our savings and operating accounts) The year-end balance sheet is strong with $2.3M in Assets and $1.9M of Liabilities. The 2018 deficit was funded from retained earnings of $400K. Please note that the year-end balance sheet does not reflect Session’s recent decision regarding the allocation of the Finch gift. Those allocations were made in January 2019. It takes a Village: Several individuals play key roles in managing our church finances. Pam Tenn regularly works with me to collect and sort each Sunday’s offerings prior to depositing them into the safe. Our team of counters (Pat Brown and Jim Boso; Debbie Grubbs and Pam Tenn; Debra Lepold and Ken Kilen, Debbie Brown and Susan Boutchie) records our weekly donations and prepares the bank deposits. Pam Tenn maintains our individual giving records and generates the giving reports you receive. Our volunteer bookkeeper (Martie Moore) records the deposit information, writes checks to pay our expenses, and balances our bank statements. Victoria De Salles, our office manager, works with Martie to accurately assign expenses to their appropriate accounts and makes sure our payroll system operates smoothly. Many thanks to each of them for their dedication to these recordkeeping activities which make it possible to keep you informed of our financial status. Respectfully submitted, Francine Miltenberger, Treasurer

STICKY FAITH & YOUTH

Last year was a rich year of ministry for the Sticky Faith Team. We maintained existing programs for youth and added new events; Sunday School, the Mexico Mission Trip, Middle School Fun Nights, Trunk or Treat, Parents Night Out and volunteer opportunities at off site venues. The middle school “Fun Nights” were well attended. Pastor Kurt and other TPC members created games and conversation that helped the middle schoolers connect with one another. A “small group” was created for a group of high school members, they met throughout the fall this year. Though it was challenging to find times that worked for the TPC families, we made the best of the events that we were able to create. Being flexible and scheduling events on different nights, days and times has been a positive move to involve teens and families in a more meaningful way in the life of the church. We will continue to recruit new members to the Sticky Faith Team and create new celebrations, traditions and rituals for both middle school and high school families. Bold Dreams for Sticky Faith:

“All high school students from Mexico Mission Trip will be involved in the life of the church.”

• Create space and time for high schoolers to have a conversation about spiritual development at

TPC • Encourage the middle school and high school members to share their stories during service,

online or through other media such as the e-mail newsletter, interview, testimony. • High school students are involved in ministry, worship, Christian life throughout their college

experience. TPC staff and members support them during their transition

What were our team’s goals? • Host “Fun Nights” to support middle schoolers as they continue building their faith foundation • Create a “Small Group” experience for the young high school members. The small group met

with Kirsten V. and Kay several times, they plan to continue meeting in the Winter/Spring. • Host synergistic events with other Ministry Teams – This year we did this during the “Trunk or

Treat” event. The Saturday Men’s group also helped. This also happened during “Parents Night Out”, this event that was hosted by CMT and supported by the Sticky Faith Team

• Inform and register eligible teens for the Triennium Conference (this will be held in 2019) • Maintain existing programs for youth, Sunday School, the Mexico Trip & explore volunteering

opportunities in the community • Recruit new Sticky Faith members and a new team lead for 2019.

Sticky Faith Guiding Principles related to the Growing Young curriculum: • Unlock Keychain Leadership – Empower young people. Share power with the right people at the

right time • Empathize with young people – 15 is the new 25, “notice” and listen • Take Jesus’s mission seriously – What’s young about the good news? • Fuel a warm community: Warm is the new cool • Prioritize young people (and families) everywhere: From rhetoric to reality • Be the best neighbors: Come alongside those that are in need. Love and shape our world

Prayer: We hope and pray that all families and youth at TPC continue to feel welcome, connected and inspired to worship and be of service. Peter 3:15: “But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness, love and respect.” Gratitude: We are grateful for the Sticky Faith Team members, Pastor Kurt, the Deacons, Elders, Pastor Mary and all of the TPC members that attended and helped at the Middle School Fun Nights, Parents Night Out, Trunk or Treat and High School community building events. We are also grateful for the families and teens that served in the community this year on the Mexico Mission trip, Street Church, Home and Hope, SOS and other ministry projects.

TRINITY FOUNDATION Formally Support & Endowment

Scott McMullin (1/2015) Georgianne Stephen (4/2016) Anne Karasky (4/2016) Craig Karasky (4/2016) Cliff Kemper (5/2017) Ken Won (5/2017) The Trinity Foundation provides one-time grants to the financially vulnerable who are without other resources, that will change the trajectory of a life with special emphasis on Seminary, Mission and outreach projects. 2018 Giving Highlights: A total of $59,227.96 of support was provided. • Seminary/Education support: $38,432

o The Trinity Foundation finished its supports of two Fuller seminarians, Gerry Garcia and Ana Espinoza. Gerry and Ana worked hard for many years to reach their goals. With our help, they obtained their degrees this year.

o The Foundation was able to provide financial support for Chardee Bryant, a local student currently studying to become a social worker at Columbia University.

o The Trinity Foundation was able to provide financial assistance to two members helping them attend the schools of their choice.

o The Foundation is sponsoring seven Romanian students in the “I Want in the Ninth Grade” program through World Vision. Funds have already been distributed for the first and second of the four years of high school.

• Youth Mexico Trip: $4,500 o The Foundation sponsored the building of one house for the Escobar Perez family.

• Other Grants:

• Granted money to pay for orthodontic work for two Albanian foster children through Torchbearers.

• Emergency financial assistance to members of Street Church through Street Life Ministries. This funding allowed these people to continue working and helping other members with transportation needs.

• Rent assistance to one of our seniors so that she can stay in assisted living.

The single most impactful idea behind an endowment is perpetuity – resources that can make an impact and magnify your gift forever. While annual stewardship is an opportunity to support the church’s ministry here and now, a gift to the Trinity Foundation helps secure the mission of our church into the future. We, as a committee, feel fortunate that we have been blessed with these resources. We continue to look for ways in which to expand opportunities to both grow the endowment and increase our grant opportunities. Respectfully submitted, Georgianne Stephen

WORSHIP MINISTRY

The Worship Team held roundtable discussions and planned Lent, Easter and Advent. A Basic Theme for the Year was Justice vs. Injustice. Using the Pastors’ suggested scriptures, the team found themes to emphasize these scriptures and involve the congregation in meaningful and liturgical ways. LENT: The overlying theme for Lent was Lamentations and Injustice, a sometimes heavy, and not often discussed, Bible topic. Soon Chan Rah, author of Prophetic Lament and Return to Justice, was our speaker for our last Sunday during Lent. He preached, and then held a short presentation on justice and injustice. He reminded us, that we, as Christians, do not have the exclusive on being made in God’s image; that all people matter to God. Jesus lives in us. We do not own Him! People are pursuing truth. If we meet people in that place, we are more likely to journey with them. He stressed the need for open communication, compassion, understanding and conversing even when it is uncomfortable. Scripture themes for Lent were: Shalom Requires Lament, The voices of Suffering, God’s Sovereignty in the Midst of Suffering, Persevere in Lament, and Corporate Sin, a Liturgical Lament. The theme for Small groups was also Prophetic Lament and injustice. Each Sunday during Lent the congregation was invited to write individual laments on cut out paper hands as prayers to God, and place them inside the wire cross at the front of the sanctuary. EASTER: on Easter Sunday, the wire cross was transformed into a “blooming” cross representing resurrection, as the congregation brought flowers and placed them in the wire cross. FALL AND ADVENT: From September through the end of November, our church immersed itself in the theme: Follow Me, the Biblical Story of Matthew. As a way to understand a little more about injustice and how some people live, the congregation was encouraged to take the Matthew 25 challenge in November. There were suggestions and activities for opportunities to take ourselves out of our comfort zones; as in sleeping on the floor, basic and/or little food, etc. ADVENT: The theme for the Advent Season was The Prophets Point to Jesus (“Do not think that I have come to abolish the law and the prophets; I have come not to abolish but to fulfill.”) Advent themes were: the Promised Righteous Branch, the Coming Messenger, A Song of Joy, Ruler of Peace, A Child has been Born to Us. The first Sunday in Advent was the annual Advent Wreath Making Sunday as all Trinity members were encouraged to make an advent wreath and use it during the Advent Season. Each Sunday worship during Advent a different family read scriptures and lit a candle signifying the themes, Hope, Love, Joy and Peace. A very meaningful online Advent Calendar revealed itself each day during Advent, as Trinity members wrote, or were videoed about prophetic voices and encouragements they have received in their lives. There were 2 Christmas Eve services. The first was an early kid-friendly one telling of the birth of Jesus. The second was at 8 pm. The brass band and choir led the congregation with music. A “review of the year,’ although startling, showed many of the messy events that have been in the news in 2018. In his sermon, Pastor Kurt reminded us that when Jesus was born, life was messy as

well…a new baby, animals and King Herod on the lookout for this new king as he killed countless boy babies. The annual tradition of lighting candles and singing Silent Night ended this holy evening. COMMUNION: Several members in the congregation approached the staff and expressed a need for a gluten-free option during communion. Several bakeries were tried, as well as Whole Foods. We tried different ways to offer gluten free in communion, but it is still a challenge. (One bakery went out of business, one time the bread was too crumbly, one time it was too soft, one time it was still frozen, one time it tasted pretty awful!) We will try to find a palatable gluten free option that will work. Sally Mellinger and Margie Pullen have agreed to help with this task for 2019. It does involve some extra steps, but with a small team rotating each time, I’m sure it will smooth out. It was again a joy being on the Worship Team this year. Besides staff, Jim and Elizabeth Boso, Margie Barkau, Suzanne Wilsey, Kathy Morey, Christine Luna, Grace Schulz, Chris Decker and Marcia Granucci were involved in the planning and implementing the many ideas. Grace Schulz will be taking over as worship coordinator. I will be happy to stay on the committee. Respectfully and joyfully submitted by Gay Hansten
