Our Mission: Chicago Youth Centers (CYC) invests in kids in underserved

communities in Chicago to help them discover and realize their

full potential.

Our Work:

As the largest independent, locally based, multi-site

youth services organization in Chicago, we take pride in

our commitment to those we consider our city's and our country’s highest priority:

our children.

Embedded in Chicago’s neighborhoods where numerous barriers make success in life a difficult endeavor, we help our youth build the academic, social, and emotional competencies and achievements needed to be successful, offering programs from early childhood education to and through college.

With programs that provide welcome environments, academic support, access to resources, and adult role models, CYC utilizes a Positive Youth Development (PYD) model, a research-based approach to building youth’s assets. PYD focuses on 40 key areas to develop children’s skills and strengths— such as school engagement, responsibility, self-esteem, and positive family commun-ication. The more assets developed, the less likely youth are to engage in high-risk behaviors. In 2010, CYC served more than 5,400 youth, parents, and guardians.

As the African proverb states, “It takes a village to raise a child.” With this in mind, we collaborate with schools, universities, churches, and other social service agencies to serve our youth, their families, and their communities. Volunteers expand the scope and enhance the quality of our progress.

In program year 2010, CYC enlisted nearly 900 volunteers who provided more than 83,000 hours of service.

Camp RosenthalCamp Rosenthal, CYC’s summer residential camp in Dowagiac, Michigan, serves more than 700 youth annually. It is one of only five camps in the Midwest devoted to serving low-income at-risk youth. For more information on Camp Rosenthal, see page 12.

Mentoring CYC operates five mentoring programs, each designed to provide our youth with one-on-one guidance and support from caring adults. For more information on Mentoring, see page 8.

n behalf of the staff and board of Chicago Youth Centers (CYC), we thank

you for helping make 2010 a year full of growth, proud achievements, and abundant, positive energy emanating from youth discovering and realizing their potential.

A recent study published by the National Academy of Sciences showed that neighborhood violence has a negative impact on the academic and social development of not only victims, but all youth living in the neighborhood. The children we serve live in communities where the threat of violence is just around the corner, and resources such as positive role models are scarce or non-existent. Our efforts to provide safe havens, emotional and educational support, and mentoring to these young people are more important now than ever.

In 2010, CYC worked with more than 5,400 youth, parents, and guardians through a combination of core programs from early childhood to and through college.

Our mentoring programs grew significantly this year, with the Mentoring Children of Prisoners program experiencing a 300 percent increase in the last two years. Another new mentoring program in the South Shore community has been such a success that the youth have begun mentoring elementary school youth themselves. Without these programs providing consistent role models and building self-esteem, we would not have graduated 100 percent of our seniors or supported more than 80 CYC alums in college through our Teen Leadership Development and College and Career Readiness programs.

These stories and more are found within the pages of this report. As we look forward, we will continue to increase efficiency while remaining effective during these challenging economic times, and our accomplishments this past year are proof we are on the right path. Again, we thank you for your continued support and for sharing our belief that all children deserve the respect, social benefits, and access to resources to be able to grow, laugh, live, realize, and discover their dreams.

Sincerely,

Steven E. Zuccarini, CYC Board Chair (2008-2010)

With this in mind, CYC’s Early Childhood Education program offers educational, social, nutritional, mental health, and disabilities services for children in our neighborhoods, aged 3–5. In 2010, CYC served 1,005 youth through our Head Start, Pre-K, and Pre-School programs.

After a nutrition assessment revealed a high range of obesity among young children at our ABC Polk Bros., Centro Nuestro, and Fellowship House centers, the Go, Slow, Whoa program was initiated to educate children and their parents on positive eating habits by teaching the nutritional and healthy difference between Go (healthy), Slow, and Whoa (unhealthy) foods. The program has served 150 youth and parents to date.

In spring, our Rebecca K. Crown, Dorothy Gautreaux, and Roseland centers were selected by policy research organization MDRC to implement its Head Start CARES program, designed to improve the social and emotional development of children in Head Start classrooms. To date, more than 325 youth have been supported with healthy, emotional, and behavioral development, which will have a lasting influence on their chances for success in school and beyond.

Building CommunityAbove left: Children from our ABC Polk Bros. Youth Center around a piano donated through Northern Board member Bonnie Phemister, who also provides piano lessons. CYC continually seeks to build bridges with the community and parents, offering parent-child days, home visits, newsletters, and workshops on parenting issues.

Early Childhood Education

Studies show that the first five years of a child’s life are a critical period in their growth; 85 percent of their intellect, personality, and social skills are

developed during this time. Children at risk of not receiving this support during this stage are likely to begin school already behind academically, a trend

that can hamper a child throughout their education.

School-Age Child Development

The hours between 3–6 p.m. are peak hours for juvenile crime and experimentation with drugs and

alcohol, a problem compounded when there are more than 15 million school-age children in the U.S

without after-school adult supervision.

After-school programs are a proven method of combating this issue; a recent study found that regular participation in high-quality after-school programs is linked to significant gains in standardized test scores and work habits as well as reductions in behavior problems among disadvantaged students.

CYC’s School-Age Child Development program provides activities to kids aged 6–12, including full days of care on out-of-school days. The program provides a safe environment for group activities with an emphasis on academic success, making good choices, and expanding one’s horizons.

CYC continually encourages parents to be actively involved; in 2010, a generous grant from the Department of Justice enhanced after-school programs by providing focused family engagement. Partnering with Parental Information Resource Center (PIRC), CYC has hired part-time Family Engagement Specialists to create family-friendly services and activities that increase communication between CYC, parents and their youth.

Hometown HuddleIn October, through a partnership with NFL Charities, the United Way of Metropolitan Chicago, and the Chicago Bears, the Hometown Huddle was held at our Elliott Donnelley Youth Center (EDYC) in Bronzeville. This event was designed to raise awareness of the importance of physical activity for children through the NFL’s Play 60 initiative. Sixty CYC kids participated with Chicago Bears players in filming the NFL’s new Play 60 commercial.  A grant from NFL Charities, Bears Care, the charitable beneficiary of the Chicago Bears, and the United Way of Metropolitan Chicago also provided financial support and equipment for a new playground at EDYC.

Teen Leadership DevelopmentCYC believes youth are served best when following a Positive Youth Development model that emphasizes a child’s strengths along with a strong connection to their families and communities.

Our Teen Leadership Development programs encourage teens to be involved with our Teen Councils and the agency-wide Teen Senate, allowing them to develop their leadership skills in school, college and business. Awards, support for higher education, job

readiness, and career awareness are geared towards creating the drive within them to reach for

higher levels of success in life.

Thanks to a partnership with the Chicago School of Professional Psychology,

our e-Mentoring program has doubled since its inception last year. Additional computer webcams added at Elliott Donnelley Youth Center allowed mentors from the School of Professional Psychology to provide weekly mentoring services via the web-based service Skype.

Chicago Public Schools awarded CYC with funding to hire mentor-advocates for a

one-year program geared toward 50 South Shore high school students who are at risk of not graduating; e.g., are involved with gangs, have few high school credits, have court mandates, or are teen parents. The program focuses on topics such as academic planning, job skills training, and employment. Already these youth have gained enough confidence to become role models themselves; they now mentor youth in CYC’s school-based mentoring program at Bret Harte Elementary School on the South Side.

In 2010, CYC’s Mentoring Children of Prisoners (MCP) program grew to 112 matches,

offering youth with an incarcerated parent a volunteer mentor. According to research, children with incarcerated parents are six times more likely than other children to become incarcerated at some point in their lives. With relationships lasting at least one year, this program builds self-esteem and allows youth to thrive with a consistent role model who provides structure, guidance, tutoring, and fun activities.

MentoringStudies have shown that mentoring programs have a substantial positive effect on youth behavior, reducing drug and alcohol use

and absenteeism and improving parental and peer relationships and youth’s confidence in their school work.

“Whether our outings with Arvier involve going to the museum, attending a sporting event, or just relaxing together for a home cooked meal and a night of Scrabble, all three of us know that our time together has made a lasting and positive impact on all of our lives.”

Mentors Carly and Stephen Brandenburg, matched with Arvier W., an MCP mentee.

1 of 112 Success Stories

“Steve has started his second year of high school at Dunbar, and he’s doing great! Check back in June. We should have a graduation ticket waiting for everyone involved.” MCP Mentor William Glover, matched 3 years with Steve S.

98

In 2010, the total number of CYC mentor

matches grew to 160 matches, with mentors

volunteering more than 3,000 hours.

CYC’s College and Career Readiness programs, located at our centers that serve teens, focus on engaging and supporting youth as they follow the path to post-secondary education and successful careers.

Through 11 scholarship programs, CYC sent 68 students to college on new or renewing scholarships. Additionally, ten of our students earned scholarships ranging from $4,600 to $6,800 from the Illinois Department of Human Services for participating in our Gear Up program.

College visits in 2010 took more than 120 students to Northern Illinois University, Joliet Junior College, Illinois State University, DePaul University, and Lincoln College. These tours provided youth with the opportunity to ask questions about college life and visualize themselves on campus.

In October, ABC Polk Bros. Youth Center in North Lawndale hosted the CYC 2010 College Fair, attended by more than 150 youth and 24 exhibitors. Youth attended workshops on high school selection, the college application process, financial aid, and met with admissions representatives from individual colleges.

CYC College Fair 2010Below: The annual college fair is part of the strong relationships CYC has with local colleges and high schools that include tutoring and support from recruitment offices, school counselors, and guidance departments.

College & Career Readiness

According to the 2000 census, only nine percent of the adult population in neighborhoods CYC operates in have a bachelor's

degree or higher. Without adequate support or role models guiding youth through their academic careers, attending and completing college will be a difficult task for many

youth in these neighborhoods.

“I have attended CYC for four years, and I dream of one day having a chance to see what

college can offer me as a young black female.”

A Former Camper Returns as a Camp CounselorA big thrill and benefit for our campers is being exposed to our staff who are positive role models and mentors who are attending college. Adella Bass is a former CYC camper who is now an Assistant Village Director at Camp Rosenthal.

How did Camp Rosenthal impact you when growing up?It helped me become the caring and responsible person that I am today. It also helped me increase my confidence, self-esteem, and sense of belonging.

What made you return to camp as staff? To give back what the counselors instilled in me, by showing kids how special and important they are. It’s great to have them in a safe environment where they can grow, have fun, and be a part of something bigger than themselves. They can find their potential and purpose just like I found mine.

Why is it important for youth from CYC neighborhoods to go to camp? Because most of the kids at camp come from the same environment I was raised in: single-family homes and violent neighborhoods. But at camp, kids become a part of a family, and every child should experience that feeling—it can last forever!

Home Away From HomeAbove: For many of our children, Camp Rosenthal is the first time they are away from their parents and the city. They are amazed by what they can do for themselves and, more importantly, for others. Activites include swimming, archery, ropes courses (pictured at left), and more!

For the second year, CYC participated in Camp 2 Grow, a national project funded by the Lilly Endowment and administered by the American Camp Association. The program fostered leadership skills and environmental awareness among CYC campers.

The recently completed Phase II of the Waterfront Development Project has tripled the size of the camp’s beachfront, allowing for more recreation, fitness and swimming lessons. In addition, the new Jean Kapnick Observation Deck will allow campers a closer view of the birds, reptiles, fish, and insects in the pond and lake.

Camp RosenthalCamp Rosenthal is CYC’s summer residential camp located in Dowagiac, Michigan, just 115 miles from Chicago. It is one of only five camps in the Midwest devoted exclusively to serving low-income children.

The camping experience is integral to CYC’s mission. At camp, children whose entire lives have been confined within their neighborhood block, on constant alert for street violence, have 330 wooded acres, including a 30-acre lake for play and exploration. Through camp activities, kids gain leadership skills, team-building, take on responsibilities, and make friends with people from all over Chicago.

In 2010, 768 campers ages 7–15 participated in weekend, summer resident, and family camping programs. Twenty percent of the campers were CYC members.

The First Fifty Years

In March, CYC officially released Chicago Youth Centers—the First 50 Years,

a history of fifty years of serving low-income at-risk youth in Chicago.

The book takes the reader from the birth of CYC on an elevator in 1956 to a decade-by-decade tour of the people, places, programs, and policies of CYC within the larger context of life and politics in Chicago and the country.

Today, as Chicago’s largest independent, locally based youth development organization, more than 5,400 low-income at-risk youth ages 3–19 and parents are provided annually with safe havens and the resources, guidance, and encouragement they need to gain an education and break out of the poverty cycle and lead successful lives.

Funded in large part by the Sappi Paper Company, CYC Board Chairs, and Faust Associates, the book is now available on the reserve shelf at the Chicago Public Library or by contacting Elizabeth Thresher at (312) 913-1700, extension 410.
