Together, we will

persevere.

But with those challenges came opportunities, and AHRI and our member companies rose to the challenges and took advantage of the opportunities to make 2020 a highly successful year for our association.

When we chose Strength in Numbers as our global trade show advertising tagline, we could not have imagined how important that would be. But as states began significant travel and workforce restrictions, we mobilized the strength of our numbers to ensure that our workers—from the factory floor to the distribution chain to the installation and maintenance so vital to our industry—were declared

“essential” in nearly every state. This allowed us to continue to provide for the health, safety, comfort, and productivity of the American people in this unprecedented time.

At the same time, our policy and international affairs staff took advantage of the relationships they had developed over the years with the Departments of State and Commerce and began new relationships with the Department of Homeland Security to communicate with the government of Mexico in trying to keep manufacturing and supply chains open in that vital country.

These endeavors made it possible to provide much-needed components and equipment to support frontline hospitals and care centers, and secure the cold chain for both food and medicines.

As we sought to protect our workers and the manufacturing and distribution chain, we also collaborated with ASHRAE and others to provide vital information to the public about the positive role of our industry in preventing infection, launching a media and ad campaign on how to create safer schools and commercial buildings.

While working 100 percent remotely, with a revised budget to reflect a pandemic reality (see pages 18–19), we still managed to make significant progress on our priority issues, including securing enactment of our top legislative priority: HFC phasedown legislation, which was signed into law December 27. We achieved an impressive 93.5 percent certification test completion rate, launched an office in Dubai to serve the Middle East and North Africa, and drove record certification program growth in China, thanks to AHRI’s team on the ground there. And our indoor air quality campaign is helping to ensure a safe return to schools, workplaces, and commercial buildings.

What became most evident months later in the face of a global pandemic, is that AHRI’s strength resides fully in our 330 member companies and 109 employees working to ensure the health, safety, comfort, and productivity of others during this difficult time. There is indeed strength in numbers, and together, we will persevere.

SOLID TESTING COMPLETION RATE ACHIEVED VIRTUALLYAHRI quickly adopted virtual service options to meet the needs of our certification program participants. Virtual tagging of equip-ment, virtual witness testing for programs that require a laboratory agent to be present, and virtual observed testing were allowed. While there were delays in certain programs, 93.5 percent of all samples were completed by the end of 2020.

We Adapt

AHRI’S COVID-19 RESPONSEFrom the onset of the global pandemic, AHRI worked diligently to advocate for HVACR manufac-turing, distribution, and installa-tion/maintenance operations to be designated as essential in both the U.S. and Mexico. Several resourc-es were made available on the public and Members Only section of the company website, ahrinet.org, and the COVID-19 Restrictions and HVACR and Water Heating Essential Status Working Group on AHRI Connect. This group provides members with access to experts and up-to-the minute information on local, state, and federal matters related to COVID-19 that impact HVACR and water heating manu-facturers and technicians.

AHRI’S EXECUTIVE DASHBOARD: A Breakthrough in HVACR and Water Heating Business Intelligence Launched in January, the AHRI Executive Dashboard is a business intelligence tool that provides AHRI certification participants with access to their company’s certification program performance data in in real-time, with the predictive ana-lytics needed to drive results. The dashboard allows users to compare their com-pany’s performance testing in relation to industry trends; use analytics to support compliance and engineering decisions; increase the accuracy of product ratings through test result analysis and quality visualization; and save time and effort on aggregating certification performance data.

In This TogetherThe COVID-19 pandemic challenges us to

collaborate in ways that were previously unimaginable.

The Air-Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute

(AHRI) salutes our 300+ HVACR and water heater member

manufacturers, U.S. and international government agencies,

and civil organizations working to keep the industry

moving forward during this difficult time.

AIM ACT SIGNED INTO LAW On December 27, the AHRI-supported American Innovation and Manufacturing Act (AIM Act) was signed into law as part of an omnibus/COVID-19 relief package. Considered the most significant action on climate issues in over a decade, the legislation gives the Environmental Protection Agency express authority to phase down production and consump-tion of hydrofluorocarbons. This is a major win for our industry and the culmination of a long, involved effort by members, staff, and coalition partners to achieve AHRI’s highest legislative priority.

SUCCESSFUL CERTIFICATION AUDITSIn 2020, AHRI’s certification program once again maintained its accreditation by the Standards Council of Canada (SCC), after a successful audit of AHRI’s certification programs, evaluating their conformity with ISO/IEC Standard 17065:2012 and associated referenced documents. On March 26, France-based auditor COFRAC extended AHRI’s cer-tification program accreditation to ISO/IEC Standard 17065 for another year, allowing AHRI certified products to be recognized as compliant in Europe.

ENHANCED CERTIFICATION DIRECTORY PUBLIC SEARCH EXPERIENCEThe AHRI Certification Directory team completed work on an enhanced user interface, allowing more search results to be shown in one view and reducing the need to scroll. The team also made the search fields more intuitive and streamlined the information and actions in the header.

We Advocate for the Industry

DRIVING AWARENESS ABOUT INDOOR AIR QUALITY AHRI recognizes the significant role of heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and water heating infrastructure in making all public buildings as safe and healthy as they can be. In October, the orga-nization launched in an indoor air quality (IAQ) campaign—Five Steps for Safer Schools—to provide building managers, educators, and families with ac-cess to information and resources that help improve IAQ and minimize the risk of COVID-19 transmission indoors. The campaign was later expanded to in-clude commercial buildings.

WORKING ON WATER HEATERSAHRI continues to pursue the passage of water heat-er definition legislation in Congress. The Department of Energy (DOE) has issued several regulations that restrict the sale of large water heaters in commercial markets. While the problem has been addressed with a series of temporary enforcement policies, the only way to provide consistent regulatory clarity for man-ufacturers is to change the statutory language and set clear definitions for residential and commercial water heaters.

. . . and Remain Committed to the Safe Refrigerant Transition

OUTREACH EFFORTS ON LOW-GWP REFRIGERANTS CONTINUEAHRI is driving the transition to low-global warm-ing potential (GWP) refrigerants through a series of educational events. While the Safe Refrigerant Transition Task Force made good progress with in-person meetings at the start of the year, an online Refrigerant Webinar Series on the latest refriger-ant research and industry developments was made available to facilitate continued stakeholder engage-ment. The Task Force was established in 2019 to ad-dress every step of the supply chain in the transition to safe low-GWP refrigerants and comprises AHRI members and stakeholders employed with contrac-tors, government agencies, the fire service, unions, training organizations, environmental groups, and other entities.

AHRTI LEADS REFRIGERANT RESEARCHAHRTI Project 9014, Refrigerant Detector Characteristics for Use in HVACR Equipment, was undertaken to assess refrigerant sensor and detec-tor performance requirements for A2L refrigerants, and the capability of commercially available refrig-erant detectors to meet the safety standard require-ments of a major refrigerating system. AHRTI also published a Phase I Refrigerant Sensor Report, and began phases II and III, in addition to a new project on Chemical Stability of Low-GWP Refrigerants with Lubricants.

We Engage Member Issues . . .

Federal and state legislative activity impacting the HVACR and water heating industry continued despite the COVID-19 pandemic. AHRI’s inability to connect with legislators in person necessitated the use of additional advocacy tools to make our voices heard on Capitol Hill and in state legislatures across the country.

As such, AHRI launched an online call-to-action center to allow industry members to contact legisla-tors and drive results on HVACR and water heating industry issues.

ONLINE CALL-TO-ACTION CENTER HELPS MEMBERS WEIGH IN WITH CONGRESS

. . . and Safeguard Member Interests

AHRI IS OUT FRONT ON IOT AND CYBERSECURITY IN HVACR AHRI hosted an Internet of Things (IoT) in HVACR Summit in January, bringing together more than 150 advocates, utilities, regulators, and legisla-tures—to join the discussion on emerging IoT issues. Keynote Speaker Karen Evans, Department of Energy (DOE) Assistant Secretary of the Office of Cybersecurity, Energy Security, and Emergency Response, stressed the importance of information sharing as a means of leveraging the expertise needed to engineer the risk out of systems, ensure greater reliability along the supply chain, reduce the risk to vulnerable consumers, and ultimately mitigate the threat from adversaries.

KEEPING AN EYE ON DECARBONIZATION INITIATIVES In keeping with Board-approved guiding princi-ples, AHRI policy staff have been monitoring and responding to many state and local decarboniza-tion initiatives that can have the effect of limit-ing consumer choice in vital heating and water heating products and equipment. A Board-level Climate Leadership Task Force was created to oversee AHRI’s activities on this issue of impor-tance to key segments of the association. AHRI seeks to serve as a resource for states and locali-ties as they work to reduce carbon emissions and energy use while ensuring the continued safety, health, and comfort of their citizens. We promote technology, innovation, energy efficiency incen-tives, and economic and environmental analysis as part of an overall roadmap to success.

Since the beginning of 2020, AHRI has tracked 215 bills across 39states and Washington, D.C.

We Are Growing . . .

AHRI’S DUBAI OFFICE OFF TO A STRONG START Launched this year and led by Francois Boueri, AHRI’s regional office in Dubai serves the Middle East and North Africa region (MENA). Its current goals are to establish close working relationships with our AHRI members in the region and to shape the region’s energy efficiency standards. The team is working with consultants and regulators to increase awareness and adoption of AHRI’s standards and certification programs, T1 and T3 certification, and to add more AHRI standards relevant to the MENA region.

ANOTHER RECORD YEAR FOR AHRI CHINA Despite its challenges, 2020 was a quite successful one for AHRI’s team in China. We continue to support our members and certification program participants, drive certification, and bring new certified product ratings to the market. There has been a remarkable 25 percent growth in the participation of our certi-fication programs, especially on air-side products, such as the Air-Cooling and Heating Coils and the Air-Handling Unit Casings programs. Annual certifi-cation tests managed by this office were 98 percent complete.

Page 14: Annual Report 2020 - AHRI

We have witnessed the strength and resilience of AHRI members and staff during this very difficult time in our world’s history. Our ability to drive the vital activities of the association while steering our own companies through the chaos caused by COVID-19 says a lot about the strength of our industry and its people. I am honored to serve as AHRI’s Chairman of the Board in the coming year, as we continue efforts to make the industry better—and are more energized than ever before—to ensure safety, comfort, and productiv-ity for all.

The next steps for our association are clear. We must ramp up efforts to help AHRI member companies and certification participants operate in a level, global playing field—and break down artificial barriers arising from com-peting standards and certification programs. As Chairman, I will embark on an initiative to make AHRI the globally recognized certification authority by increasing international participation in our programs and building rela-tionships with regulatory bodies in countries across the world.

We will continue to address indoor air quality, facilitating access to infor-mation and resources for stakeholders—from the contractors and distribu-tors that provide their expertise and equipment, to the building owners and managers charged with making spaces safe. Having achieved legislative success in our efforts to phasedown high global warming potential refrig-erants, we will continue to promote environmental stewardship, including being actively engaged in the discussions surrounding decarbonization and its impact on our industry and our member companies.

I recognize that the important work we do cannot be accomplished without talent and support, so I also look forward to addressing the skilled labor shortage by collaborating with industry partners to accelerate outreach to young people, veterans, and those in under-served communities. Those who can, must, and only AHRI is positioned to make these goals reality.

AHRI member companies can rest assured that we will prioritize your en-gagement and satisfaction as we navigate toward the new normal.
