FOREWORD BY THE DEAN
I am pleased to introduce the 2019 annual
report which highlights the School of Computer
Sciences, Universiti Sains Malaysia’s commitment
and achievement to advancing education, knowledge
sharing, collaboration and research.
As we grew, we are committed to another successful year for the School of Computer Sciences.
The various achievements and accomplishments as illustrated in this report have shown that the school
is committed to increasing the performance at both local and international levels. The school is
progressing satisfactorily in areas such as research and innovation, teaching and learning, publications
as well as industry and community engagement aligned with the university's mission and vision. As we
face a very exciting future, and a very fast changing digital horizon, we look up at many more
collaborative opportunities with various industry and agencies.
All of these achievements would not be possible without the continuous support and
commitment from every faculty, administrative and technical member of the School. Therefore, let us
continue to work together as everyone is valuable for the school's success.
This year's annual report reflects not only our performance in 2019, but also the trends and
opportunities of the future. This annual report will be beneficial to our prospective students, potential
collaborators and the public seeking the latest information on academic, research and other
engagement activities within our school.
My heartfelt gratitude to the editorial board members and all those involved for their effort and
dedication in producing this report. I believe it has been a great year and we look forward
enthusiastically to the years ahead.
Thank you.

Annual report 2019
Introduction
The School of Computer Sciences was established officially on the 1st of March
1995 after functioning for a period of 20 years as the Division of Computer Science, an
independent and autonomous unit within the School of Mathematical and Computer
Sciences.
The period has witnessed various developments, advances, and achievements of
computer science pertaining to the academic programmes, research and development,
consultancy, community services and others. The school is now in leading position as
far as research and development activities are concerned and are gearing up its efforts to
meet new challenges of research and development by restructuring our research
activities in line with the emerging trend of multidisciplinary and trans-disciplinary
research.
The school has been maintaining strong and strategic linkages with the industry.
Formal and informal events have been organised to exchange ideas that benefit the
curriculum and the industry. The school has been involved in various joint projects with
all types of industries supported by the national and international grants. The school has
also been involved in consultancies, particularly in software system developments.
In terms of global partners, the school has always maintained strong and strategic
linkages with universities in North America, Europe, Australia, Japan, Singapore and
the Middle East. These smart partnerships include long-standing research collaborations
with several French universities on natural language processing, distributed computing
and artificial intelligence. The joint supervision of postgraduate students is made
possible through such linkages. Over the next decade, the School of Computer Sciences
will continue its efforts to strengthen its curriculum and at the same time explore
research areas that contribute to the development of the nation.

ACADEMIC PROGRAMMES
UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAMME
Introduction
Computer Science at USM began with a course in programming in 1974. It has since developed
into a specialisation in Computer Science under the Bachelor of Science (Mathematics) honours
degree, and eventually the Bachelor of Science (Computer Science) (B.Sc. (Comp.Sc.)) degree with
honours was offered. Beginning in the 1983/84 session, after a complete revamp of the curriculum,
the Bachelor of Computer Science (B.Comp.Sc.) degree with honours was offered to replace the B.Sc.
(Comp.Sc.) degree.
USM's B.Comp.Sc. (Hons.) has succeeded significantly in producing highly qualified graduates
that have been widely accepted by both the public and the private sectors. An important contributing
factor to this success is its strong curriculum, which always strives to achieve a balance between the
teaching of the theory of computing and exposure to practical aspects.
The curriculum has been continually updated in accordance with current technology. For
instance, in the 1992/93 session a new curriculum which was more up-to-date was implemented, and
in the 1994/95 session, it was further modified to conform to the University Academic System (SPU).
Beginning with the 1996/97 session, the curriculum had been adjusted to reduce the minimum period
for graduation from 4 years to 3 years under the Three Year Academic System (SPTT). In 2000/01
session a new curriculum was introduced and adapted to conform with the recommendation made by
the National Higher Education Council on SPTT (SPTT(M)).
In 2006/07 session, a new revised curriculum was introduced. The degree programme has been
adjusted in 2009/2010 to revert the minimum period for graduation to 4 years (Four Year Academic
Systems) (Sistem Pengajian Empat Tahun) (SPET).
A revised curriculum was introduced in 2019/20 academic session which involves restructuring
the degree programme by allowing students to major in three areas namely intelligent computing,
computing infrastructure and software engineering. The degrees offered will be Bachelor of Computer
Science (Hons.)(Intelligent Computing), Bachelor of Computer Science (Hons.)(Computing
Infrastructure), and Bachelor of Computer Science(Hons.)(Software Engineering).
The School of Computer Sciences was the first school in USM to offer a collaborative
programme with private colleges at the diploma level since 1995 and also the first to offer the USM
external degree programme beginning 1997.

Industrial Training Excellence Award
During the industrial training, academic staff will be sent to visit the students to understand their
working conditions and tasks assigned as well as their attitudes towards the training. After the
completion of industry training, the students will submit a report to describe their industrial
experiences. Based on the academic staff’s reports and the students’ reports, a panel will then meet to
select students who performed well during their industrial attachment in terms of contributions to the
company, tasks completed, motivation to learn and report writing. The following is the list of students
