As per the tradi�on of these twinins�tu�onsofunderstandingtheneedofthehourandbethefirsttotakefirststep,theybecamepioneersinestablishingaChairandDivisionofMedicalHumani�esin the State of Maharashtra. I am happy that the

students want to follow the dis�nguished history ofexper�se,caringandcomfor�ngofthestalwartsoftheseins�tu�ons.Itismyproudprivilegetowriteonthehandbookbeingprintedontheoccasionof

rdthirdAnnualDaybeingcelebrateon23 January2019.Whyteachthehumani�es?Whystudythem?Medicineisdefinedas

the art and scienceof healing. Today in India entranceexams tomedicalcollegesarebasedonscien�ficfactsandconceptswithabsenceofcri�calthinkingandbalancingtheprac�cewithhumanapproach. Wearetotallyforge�ngthefineartspartofhealingwhichneedstobeaddedtomedicalcurriculum. Medicine is largely an applied science. It requires skillsdevelopedbyobserva�on,prac�ceandexperiencebackedbypropera�tudeandknowledge.Withcurrenttechnologicaladvances,therehasbeenarapiddecline in the human element of health care system. The art of clinicalmedicineisdyinginthepresentset-upandthereisneedtorevitalizeit.

UnderthisChairwearetryingtosensi�zenewentrantstohandletheemo�onaldistressofsickindividualsandtheirrela�ves. Wearetryingtoteachthattechnicalprogressshouldnotblunttheirhumanity,ignoreethicsandtheneedforempathy.

Theimportanceofhumani�esinmedicaleduca�onisrealisedacrosstheglobe.Thedaywillnotbetoofarthatthissubjectwillbeincludedinthemedicalcurriculum.Weareastepaheadinstar�ngtheDr.ManuV.L.KotharichairofMedicalHumani�esandDivisionofHumani�es.Iwishyouallthebest.

Thedivisiononmedicalhumani�escommencedits ac�vi�es a�er considerable soul-searching andtrepida�on.Ourmedicalstudentsandresidentdoctorsarepressedfor�me.Theyworkhardandoverlonghours.Thestudentsare also burdened by the need to perform atexamina�ons.Todoso,thecommonpercep�onisthata�endance at coaching classes outside the college isobligatory.Theseclassesencroachonwhateverli�lefree

�metheyhaveundertheexis�ngsystem. Calmreasoningconvincedusthatthesearepreciselythereasonswhythe newly formed division and its ac�vi�es are vital. They provide ourstudentsandresidentdoctorsentryintoaworldoutsidethatofmedicineandcut-throatcompe��on.Thearts,literature,cinema,dance,thetheatreandmuchmorethatservetoenlivenandinvigoratearebroughtintofocus.Thefact that there is lifeoutsidethefieldofmedicine isemphasizedandouryoungercolleaguesareencouragedtopar�cipateinit. Largenumbersofpa�ents,financialandotherhandicapsintrea�ngtheirillnessesandconsequentfrustra�onscancauseburnoutinyoungandimpressionableminds.Theymayalsoresultindifficul�esinseeingthehumanbeingswhoarenowpresen�ngaspa�ents,theiranxie�es,fearsandspecialneeds. Our studyof the lives of the great physicians of thepast and themannerInwhichtheycaredfortheirpa�entswithempathy,concernandgenerosity, usingmeans that embodied ethical principles, can serve as acorrec�ve,inspiringus,inturn,totreatourpa�entsinasimilarmanner.Thehumani�esalsoenableustocul�vatethea�tudethatsummedupthephilosophy of Antoninus Pius, 'the best of men and wisest of Romanemperors' (Sir William Osler), who, on his deathbed, pronounced'Aequanimitas' as hiswatchword. Equanimity – calmness and composureespecially in difficult situa�ons – helps us meet every aspect of humanrela�onshipappropriately,firmlyandcourageouslywithouthardeningthehumanheartbywhichwelive. Thehumani�esenrichusandindoingso,alsoimproveourcareofthosewhoformtheveryreasonforourenteringtheprofessionofmedicine.

AsapartoftheOrienta�onProgramfortheinterns,amoviewasshown.Dr.LopaMehtacoordinatedthissession.Thestudentswereaskedtoreflectoversuccess versus fulfillment and career versus character. The movie Patch Adamswasusedtosparkoffdiscussion.Thestudentsdeliberatedoverthe

pointswhichweregiventothemtoreflect.Theyfeltthatthiswasagoodwayofimpar�ngtothemthenecessaryvaluesinprac�ceofmedicine.

“This is an era where Depression and Anxiety are ge�ng to be endemic globally. Medical prac��oners are condi�oned to provide quick treatment of every manifesta�on of physical and emo�onal discomfort. Most doctors do not find �me to listen to the pa�ents for more than a couple of minutes, some�mes not even that. The emerging system of 'managed care' demands quan�ty or numbers of care. Quality of care is o�en not the focus.Medical science is a science based on elaborate insight into the nature of discomfort experienced by a pa�ent, duly collaborated with clinical pathology as revealed on lab tests, exploring the diseased organ through radiology, blood and biological fluid tests, surgical explora�on and in extreme cases, postmortem findings.

thOur predecessors like Sushrut (6 Century BC) have labored to provide meaningful insights and effec�ve therapy based on understanding what the pa�ent would be struggling to reveal. Listening to the pa�ent was thus pivotal to health care. The two world wars and several other military conflicts imposed a demand on the medical profession to demonstrate quick symptom control and help the soldiers to get Combat ready as soon as possible. Inadvertently perhaps, the medical profession surrendered the skill of listening in favor of designing strategies for more apparent strategies of quick symptom removal.Before the World War II, Psychiatry had rediscovered the healing power of listening. Freudian Psychoanalysis is the elaborate science based on hours

spent to listening to the ailing individual and support efforts to reorganize their ini�a�ves to deal with the inevitable stress and strain of rou�ne life. BUT it is �me consuming, commodity in short supply.This presenta�on describes importance of the skills of listening as it provides insights into conflicts of contemporary life style. The simple skill of empathy in listening could be a strong treatment technique. Literature describes nine ways of listening. Each has a connota�on of its own. The op�mal listener is the one can look beyond the spoken words and understand the inevitable but not easily revealed struggle to search of peace and purpose in life”.

From the lens of diversity and inclusion, lived experiences of those who are le� behind are valuable. From the humani�es perspec�ve, the prac�ce of reflec�ve capacity, visual literacy, narra�ve competence and cri�cal thinking help us in changing a�tudes and behavior

(making it more ethical and professional), making effec�ve communica�ons, respec�ng diversity and teaching empathy. In my talk I shall be sharing real life experiences to leave no one behind in achieving our goal of cure with care.

Panel Discussion-“Withdrawal of medical Treatment and Advance Direc�ves”.Agroupofpanelistsdiscussedandchallengedthecurrentideasofmedicineandhumanity.The panel discussion focused on medical, legal and ethical issues that arise from the withdrawal or withholding of medical treatment from terminally‐ill pa�ents, as well as the implica�ons of recognizing advance direc�ves through the law. The aim of the discussion was to invite a wide variety of views from different stakeholders and discuss solu�ons for an implementable legal framework to give effect to advance direc�ves. A secondary aim was also to raise awareness among medical students about the issue.

Dr. Dhvani MehtaDr Dhvani Mehta completed her Bachelor's in Legal Sciences and Law from Government Law College, Mumbai. She then read for the Bachelor of Civil Law,M .Phil and D. Presenta�on by Mr. Amrit Gangar, Film Theorist, Curator, Cultural Ac�vistTotal Dura�on of film screening and discussion was 90 minutes. Mr. Amrit Gangar is a Mumbai‐based film theorist, curator and cultural ac�vist. He has presented his theory of 'Cinema of Prayoga' at different venues in India and abroad. He has several books to his credit as author and editor. Over the years, he has been on the juries of na�onal and interna�onal film fes�vals. He was instrumental in establishing a film club in G.S. Medical College some years ago. He has spearheaded its vibrant revival now. 7 Feb.2009.YoungBenCarsondidn'thavemuchofachance.Growingup inabrokenhomeamongstpovertyandprejudice,hisgradessufferedandhistemperflared,andyet,hismotherneverlostherfaithinhim.Insis�nghefollowtheopportuni�essheneverhad,shehelpedtogrowhisimagina�on,intelligenceand,most importantly, his belief in himself. That faithwould be his gi�.Growingupinpoverty-strickenDetroitwithhismotherandelderbrother,Cur�s,Bencouldhaveneverdreamedofthefuturethatlayaheadforhim.When9-year-oldBen'sfatherabandonshisfamily,hisheartisbrokenwiththehurtlas�ngalife-�me.Ben'smother,Sonya,isthedrivingforceinhersons'younglives.

Thereweremanytempta�onsandchallengesforBenandCur�sthatcouldhave led them astray. But his mother con�nues to focus on what isimportantandkeepsdrivinghomethevaluesofeduca�onandsuccessasapriority.Benbeginstobelieveinhimselfandworkshardatbecomingoneofthebestkidsinclassinjuniorandseniorhighschool.Although Ben's first vision was to become a missionary doctor or apsychiatrist,hestartstobecomeinterestedinneurosurgery.BenCarsonbecomes aworld-class pediatric neurosurgeon at the pres�gious JohnsHopkinsHospitalinBal�more,MD.BenCarsonhasbecomeaninspira�ontoallracesandtoyoungandoldalike.Dr.LopaMehtaconductedthesession.Theinternswerestunnedbytheinspira�onal biopic “Gi�edHands” and feltwhen they enteredmedicalcollegetheyhadthiskindofpurpose,somehowitwaslotduringthetediouscurricularrequirementsofoverloadingofinforma�onalstudy.Thismoviehasrekindledthefeelingsandsomewhereitwillpromptthemtogivetheirbestintheprofessionalcareer.

st31 August 2018 ‐ Workshop on Resilience by Dr. Henal Shah for undergraduate students Dr.HenalShahexplainedthatresilienceistheprocessofadap�ngwellinthefaceofadversity,trauma,tragedy,threatsorsignificantsourcesofstress—suchasfamilyandrela�onshipproblems,serioushealthproblemsorworkplaceandfinancial stressors.Being resilient doesnotmean thatapersondoesn'texperiencedifficultyordistress.Itisthecapacitytorecoverquicklyfromdifficul�es;toughness.Itistheabilityofasubstanceorobjecttospringbackintoshape;elas�city.Itisbouncebackabilityfromadversity.Whenfacedwithadifficultlifeevent–forexample,thesuddenlossofalovedone–resilientindividualsareabletosuccessfullycopewith,oradaptto,theassociatedstress.

Resilience is that ineffable qualitythat allows some people to beknockeddownbylifeandcomebackstronger than ever. Rather thanle�ngfailureovercome...Psychological resilience is theabilitytosuccessfullycopewithacrisisandtoreturntopre-crisisstatusquickly.Resilienceexistwhenthepersonuses"mental processes and behaviors in

The la�er clarifica�onexplainsthefactapartfrommakinganameforherselfinmedicalhistory,shehasprovidedauthorita�veaccountsonChapbooks–'small,affordableformsofliteratureforchildrenandadultsthatweresoldonthestreets';Foundlings, orphans and unmarried mothersandOliver Twistand the workhouse.Forsomeyearsnow,shehasbeenworkingtowardsthepreserva�onofaformerworkhouseonClevelandStreetinLondonasahistoricallandmark.

She described Dr. Henry Gray's life in brief andfocussedonhowheconceivedofanimprovementuponQuain'sAnatomy–thenthepreferredtextbookonthesubject.Thedetailsprovidedduringthetalkcanalsobestudiedinherbookreferredtoabove.Duringthistalk,shealsointroducedustothepersonwhoformedthesubjectofhersecondtalk–Dr.HenryVandykeCarterandtoldusofpe�y-mindednessthat prompted Gray to downplay the contribu�on of Dr. Carter's superbillustra�onstothereputa�onofthecompletedwork.The lectureen�tledPathophysiology inVictorianBombay:HenryVandykeCarter's pathbreaking work at Grant Medical and JJ Hospital dealt withCarter'sresearcheswhilstheservedasProfessorandlaterPrincipaloftheseins�tu�ons.
