A WOR D OF GR E ET I NG

Dear Friends and Partners in Ministry, Fifteen years, going strong. And we are profoundly grateful to God. Leadership Transformations has been offering soul hospitality for leaders and teams since July 1, 2003. Each ministry year has seen new dimensions of our portfolio emerge, while existing services continue to expand. We have taken a prayerful, intentional posture to our maturation, and we have countless examples of God’s blessing. The most gratifying aspect of our service is manifest in the lives and ministries of the leaders we have served. The statistics are rather staggering to consider. What was once a one-person entity has grown to a team of 30 board and ministry team members. We have grown from one initiative to multiple. And, from a handful of churches, ministries, and leaders to literally thousands. As we peruse the landscape of our involvement, our team has served leaders from nearly all 50 U.S. states and several countries around the world. The reach of LTI continues to expand, and we are delighted with what you will discover in the following pages of this year’s annual report. We could not accomplish all that God has invited us to consider without an amazing team of gra-cious, godly, and gifted individuals. We marvel at the quality of people God has sent our way over the years. We celebrate the team and we honor all who have come alongside us over the years. We thank God for their presence in our lives and we look forward to all that awaits us in the future. Special thanks to all of our partners who have sacrificially given of their time, talent, and treasure. The LTI family is a rich mosaic of people from a vast array of geographic and ethnic diversity. We pray that will continue to expand and deepen in the future. May the unity we know today as friends in Christ continue to bear fruit for God’s glory. God bless you with an abundance of his grace, mercy and peace. Your brothers in Christ,

Stephen A. Macchia Graeme MillsFounder & President Chairman of the Board

I consider my time in Selah one of the great-est gifts ever given with so many invitations to deepen my understanding of God’s love! New practices, discussions, reading and engagement with such beautiful people have all been trans-

formative. These gifts continue to shape how I relate with directees, clients, and God. – Susan Cunningham, Pasadena, CA

Much of what the Holy Spirit is using in me in ministry has been modeled by the Selah faculty. This program has been a tremendous gift to me, and now it has become a gift to our church. – Dan Huie, Seattle, WA

Emmaus has been one of the most spiritually formative, and transformative, experiences of my life. It has helped me become a better listener and “noticer” of the initiatives of the Holy Spirit in my life; has taught me how to meet Jesus more

deeply in scripture, in silence, and in community; has offered me the gift of some wonderful spiritual friends and companions, and has equipped me to better care for my own soul so that I am able to better care for the souls of others. – Brian Emmet, Arlington, MA

Emmaus is a shelter for my soul and a place to renew and rest and reinforce the sacred work of the Holy Spirit in me. Emmaus provides me a place that feels like home for my soul; a place of encouragement, deepening and prayer. It gives

me time and space to think deeply, be stretched and challenged. – Chris O’Reilly, Ontario, Canada

Emmaus has been a spiritual lifeline. Times when I seemed to be sinking, I was pulled into the shore. Times I felt unplugged, I was plugged back in. I am extremely grateful that the Lord gave me this opportunity to experience

the warmth of spiritual friendship as Jesus wove in and out in our midst, thank you! – Aruna Ratnavibhushana, Culpeper, VA

The increasing number of staff to serve the growing homeless and addicted population on campus since November 2016 raised concerns among our leadership team. They recognized the demands and challenges being made on the staff,

in loving them, caring for them and helping them, move forward with their lives, in building a community of hope. It challenged our physical, emotional and spiritual well-being. In an effort to be pro-active about our health in these areas, we sought to engage the services of LTI as providers of soul care. Those who have attended soul care retreats looked forward to it and those who were there for the first time had an undeniable experience hearing God. They were moved to tears sharing their experience. These were encouraging to those present. The group was strengthened in the sessions. They were blessed. – David Packiam, Springs Rescue Mission, Colorado Springs, CO

CHAT is a catalyst for conversation in the congregation. As members of the pastoral search committee, the assessment broadened and deepened our understanding of the cur-rent situation of the congregation. We used

the option of tailoring the survey with our own questions for an exploration of which potential pastoral roles were seen by the church as the primary priorities in our next chapter of shared ministry. Debriefing the highlights from the results helped focus the church discussion about where we are at and where we could be going. All this information significantly influenced how we shaped the ministry posting and in screening the applicants. With our new lead pastor in place, it gives her and the rest of our leaders’ data for discernment as we continue to seek the Lord’s leading about ministry directions. – Dr. John McNally, Acadia Divinity College

SA RESOU

“I can’t believe how the Scriptures came alive!” exclaimed a spiritual friend

aft er I suggested he try reading the Scriptures slowly and out loud. He had

read the Bible all his life; sometimes the text was full of life and challenge.

Recently his devotional life was more mechanical, going through the motions.

Here was a serious Christian going through a dry spell. Deciding to read

through the Bible in a year, at breakneck speed, he completed his assignment

but he sensed very little of the voice of God in his life.

I recalled a time when I fi rst found reading aloud, meditatively and slowly,

aided my hearing of God. Was this some newfangled reading of Scripture

from the latest author? No, it is a style that is old as the Bible. St Benedict of

Nursa, a 6th century organizer of monks who aided students in their study

of Scripture, is oft en credited with the organizing structure of Lectio Divina.

Lectio Divina or Sacred Reading (some call it devotional reading) of

Scripture is not Bible study. It is more like praying the Scriptures. It is

reading the Scriptures with the heart. Lectio Divina does not replace Bible

study but complements and enhances it so as to let God address our hearts

as well as our heads. Too oft en we read Scripture as a devotional duty rather

than an appointment with the living God. When I invited my friend to slow

down and listen, it was like the opportunity to ruminate over a love letter as

opposed to reading and analyzing a bill from Verizon.

Th e Upper Room suggests this way to practice sacred reading with an assist

from Richard Foster:

1. Lectio (reading with a listening spirit) Read the Scripture slowly. Watch

for a key phrase or word that jumps out at you or promises to have special

meaning for you. It is better to dwell profoundly on one word or phrase than

to skim the surface of several chapters. Read with your own life and choices

in mind.

2. Mediatio (refl ecting on what we are “hearing”) Refl ect on a word or phrase.

Let the special word or phrase that you discovered in the fi rst reading sink

“ Lectio has been used for over 1,500 years. It is gaining popularity as more and more people are fi nding it a powerful way to nurture their spiritual lives. In the past (especially in the Protestant church), we have concentrated on the study of the Bible. As a result we have come to know a lot about the Bible. But we have not been very good at applying the Bible. Lectio divina is an approach that builds on serious Bible study but moves to new depths as we open ourselves to God through the Bible.”

“Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God.”

- Colossians 3:16

LECTIO DIVINA

Written by John French, Selah Faculty

into your heart. Bring mind, will and emotions to the task. Be like Mary,

Jesus’ mother, who heard of the angel’s announcement and “treasured” and

“pondered” what she had heard (Luke 2:19).

3. Oratio (praying in response to this hearing) Respond to what you have

read. Form a prayer that expresses your response to the idea, then “pray it

back to God.” What you have read is woven through what you tell God.

4. Contemplatio (contemplating what we will carry forward into our lives)

Rest in God’s word. Let the text soak into your deepest being, savoring an

encounter with God and truth. When ready, move toward the moment in

which you ask God to show you how to live out what you have experienced.

Don’t feel tied rigidly to the structure. Allow your heart to connect with God.

May God bless the reading and receiving of his Word.

Hollinger, President, Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary

It has been my delight to participate in some way in the good work of LTI by pub-lishing Steve Macchia’s recent books. May the fruit of your work continue in the de-cades to come. – Cindy Bunch, Associate Publisher/Director of Editorial, InterVar-sity Press

Our greatest risk as individuals, churches, and ministries is to be out of step with the Holy Spirit. I am so thankful for Steve Mac-chia and his team as they encourage us to take time to hear from the Spirit of God. – Dan Busby, President, ECFA

All around the country I enjoy meeting an increasing number of pastors, spiritual di-rectors, and others who have been deeply shaped by the outstanding long-haul min-istry of Leadership Transformations. Well done! It’s only the beginning! – Mindy Ca-liguire, founder of Soul Care, a spiritual formation ministry

From Paula and me and with heartfelt con-gratulations, we celebrate with you the 15th anniversary of Leadership Transformations. Having stood with you since LTI was just a seedling of an idea, we are overwhelmed with gratitude for all that God has done through this ministry that has influenced thousands and through these thousands, millions more. With love, Barry. – Barry Corey, President, Biola University

LTI, thank you for caring for the parts of life that matter. Your fifteen years of service have helped individuals and teams cultivate flour-ishing lives. – Russell Courtney, Executive Director and Co-Founder of The SoulCare Project

Gem and I send along our heartfelt con-gratulations on reaching your fifteenth year of ministry as Leadership Transformations. I think of all the leaders who have experienced the transforming work of God through you all over those years. We send along our prayer that the fruit of these first fifteen will be only a fraction of the much greater fruit God will bear in and through you in the next fifteen! – Alan & Gem Fadling, Founders, Unhur-ried Living, Inc.

I’m so grateful for LTI! The deep, signifi-cant and lasting impact of your labors is im-measurable. Well done friends. Well done. – Nathan Foster, Renovaré, Director of Community Life
