Turning business commitments into real action

• The Business & Climate Summit (BCS) is the leading annual forum for businesses, investors and policymakers on climate action. It is where business and governments come together to agree on a roadmap for reaching net zero emissions over the next half century. It provides the platform for business to turn commitments into real action and look at how they take advantage of a swift transition to a low carbon economy while reducing the risk of climate change.

• BCS is held every year in different countries for building partnerships needed to accelerate the low carbon transition. BCS was launched in France in 2015. The second edition of BCS was held in London in 2016. The third edition of BCS was held in New Delhi, India for the first time to showcase the voice and engagement of Indian industry in the global cause of climate change.

Our Mission

• The Business & Climate Summit Association (BCS Association) is a non-profit organisation that was created from the belief that business holds the key to meeting global carbon reduction targets; and that collaboration between business and government is critical to success.

• The BCS Association works with key partners to organise the annual Business & Climate Summit, a unique forum to facilitate the dialogues between business and government leaders in order to solve the climate change issues affecting our world. The Business & Climate Summit is the leading annual forum for businesses, investors and policymakers on climate action. It is where business and governments come together to agree on a roadmap for reaching net zero emissions over the next half century. It demonstrates how low carbon strategies are good for business and good for growth – and builds the partnerships needed to scale up and accelerate the low carbon transition.

Our History

• The BCS Association was formed following the historic first edition of the Business & Climate Summit in 2015 in the lead up to COP21. The first edition drew together over 2000 international high-level business leaders, policymakers and investors to Paris to demonstrate bold action, adopt forward-looking strategies and call for ambitious policies, allowing us to scale up climate change solutions.

• Since this successful first edition, the BCS Association has partnered with leadership organisations to bring to life subsequent editions of the Business & Climate Summit. Each edition contributes to the business community involvement in the fight against climate change through open, non-discriminatory, non-partisan debate, privileging diversity in opinions. The second edition of the Business & Climate Summit was held in London in 2016 and the third edition in New Delhi in August / September 2017.

First Edition – Paris 2015

• 200 days before UN Climate Change Conference in Paris, the May 20 – 21 Business & Climate Summit – also in Paris – provided a unique forum for business and government leaders to demonstrate bold action, adopt forward-looking strategies and call for ambitious policies, allowing us to scale up solutions.

• The Business & Climate Summit was an unprecedented mobilisation convening 25 business networks representing over 6 million companies from more than 130 countries; and together, they called for an alliance of all actors to lead the global transition to a low-carbon, climate resilient economy.

• French President, François Hollande, opened the Business & Climate Summit and called for business to take action, individual or collective, on the road to the Paris COP21.

• Business leaders and investors demonstrated the bold climate actions many of them are already taking, and called upon policymakers to:

o introduce robust and effective carbon pricing mechanisms on all emissions – including the elimination of fossil fuel subsidies;

o establish an alliance between business and governments leading to the integration of climate policies into mainstream economy;

o leverage public funds and private sector finance to de-risk investment towards low-carbon assets.

• The Summit concluded with a speech by the French Minister for Foreign Affairs, Laurent Fabius, who encouraged companies to share low-carbon innovation, commit to existing climate action initiatives, publish those commitments on the NAZCA platform and continue the dialogue with governments after COP21.
