ABOUT PAL VANCOUVER
P—A—L stands for Performing Arts Lodges. Our building on Cardero Street provides a safe, affordable home for a vibrant community of creative professionals who work or have worked in the professional performing arts.
Our doors are open to all disciplines — film, television, radio, theatre, dance, music — and all occupations within those disciplines — design, direction, performance, promotion, production, technical, writing, and more. Priority is given to seniors (55+), persons with disabilities, and those with the greatest housing need. The average annual income of a senior who has spent his or her working life in the professional performing arts is $10,000—less than half that of other Canadians over the age of 65.
Founded in 2001 by Joy Coghill, one of Canada’s best-known actors, and BC theatre director Jane Heyman, PAL Vancouver opened a new, eight-storey, Coal Harbour residence just five years later, in May 2006. In 2008, PAL Vancouver was awarded a prestigious CMHC Best Practices in Affordable Housing Award for outstanding accomplishments in furthering housing affordability in Canada.
A professional actor, dancer, musician or behind-the-scenes worker can have a successful career in Canada’s vibrant arts scene without ever being able to afford a home, save much for retirement or earn enough to establish a reasonable pension. If he or she becomes disabled at any point, hopes and plans for a secure old age recede even further. At the end of their careers, some of our most successful and well-known artistic pioneers have found themselves living in substandard accommodation, isolated, lonely and even hungry. According to the Demographia survey of 360 housing markets in nine Western countries, Vancouver is the second-most costly city in the world to live in. For seniors, it is a difficult region to find affordable housing.
PAL Vancouver, a registered Canadian charity, provides substantial rental assistance and creative connection for the residents in 70% of our building’s 111 suites—well above the City of Vancouver’s requirement for social housing providers. In addition, PAL’s professionally equipped 150-seat, eighth-floor theatre provides vital performance and event space for residents, emerging artists, community groups and businesses. The PAL Studio Theatre is the only professionally equipped live performance venue of its kind in Coal Harbour and the West End.
PAL Founders Circle: Chris Tyrell Loranger, Tony DuMoulin, Terry Kelly, Phil Boname, Donna Wong-Juliani, Joy Coghill C.M., Ellie O’Day, Jane Heyman, Tory Ross and William Samples.

PAL VANCOUVER’S MISSION AND VALUES
OUR MISSION To provide longstanding members of Vancouver’s performing arts professions with affordable housing within a vibrant and creative community setting.

COMPASSION We provide compassionate, respectful support for older, isolated and/or disabled professionals to remain self-sufficient, contributing members of the performing arts community and society.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Last August I was proud to mark my sixth year as a member of PAL Vancouver’s board of trustees, and enter my third year as board president. From those early days until now, I have asked myself how can we not only maintain but expand upon PAL’s mission.
As a board, we took several steps toward making PAL thrive. Among the first was to be clear what our mission was. The result was a new mission statement: “To provide longstanding members of Vancouver’s performing arts professions with affordable housing within a vibrant and creative community setting.”
The second was to ensure PAL was on a sure and sustainable financial footing, by reviewing our housing mix and strengthening our fundraising regime. We have benefited greatly from the ongoing support of our cherished donor community, our union partners, Theatre Cares, and the generous invitations from productions such as Theatre Under the Stars, Bard on the Beach and the Arts Club Theatre Company to “pass the hat.”
The result of those efforts is that PAL is in the black, posting a modest surplus for the past two years, as well as increasing our replacement reserve fund by over $100,000.
By having a clear mission and by being financially sustainable, PAL was able to take on its next big challenge: to expand our housing stock in order to reduce our waiting list. The results of those efforts have been extremely fruitful, with approvals completed with BC Housing and the City of New Westminster to establish new housing in that vibrant community!
But our work cannot end there — there is much to do in order to build upon the original vision of PAL Vancouver’s beloved co-founders Joy Coghill and Jane Heyman. To this end, we are strengthening our ties with PAL Canada and with the other PAL chapters across the country.
7
This past year, the board’s focus was also to bring renewal to our own ranks. The result is that several new trustees are beginning to serve terms on PAL’s board. I am continually grateful to those trustees who have served their terms and provided me with their counsel over the years. Warm thanks go to Ellie O’Day in particular, for all of your generosity and spirit.
We are also lucky to have such a resourceful and committed staff. Our thanks go to Gary Glacken (Executive Director), Karen Woodman (Donor Relations and Resource Development Specialist), Gwenda Lorenzetti (Resource Development Assistant), Latisha Macgregor (Housing Manager), Winnie Kwan (Accountant), and Astrid Sars (Theatre Manager).
On behalf of PAL’s Board of Trustees and ex-officio representatives, I send our best wishes for an exciting year ahead!
Mike Klassen President, PAL Vancouver

TREASURER’S REPORT FINANCE COMMITTEE CHAIR: Bill Cox, FCPA, FCA MEMBERS: Gary Glacken (staff), Chris Patrick, Mike Klassen (Board Chair)
On behalf of the Finance Committee it is my pleasure to provide this report.
The Committee meets monthly in advance of Board meetings with both Executive Director Gary Glacken and Board Chair Mike Klassen in attendance. Responsibilities of the Committee include:
• Review of monthly financial statements and monitoring of financial position • Preparation of annual budget and monitoring of budget/actual variances • Ensuring that financial systems and processes are operating effectively and
minimizing risk to the organization • Controlling the relationship with the external auditor and reviewing the audited financial statements • Short and long-term financial planning including consideration of a second property
2017 was a very strong year from a financial viewpoint. Cash and term deposits increased by over $165,000 and we paid down our long-term debt by $126,000. Revenues overall were similar to the prior year while expenses decreased by over $30,000 resulting in an excess of revenue over expenses before amortization of almost $220,000.
Along with all this good news comes the realization that our building continues to age and we have not built up reserve funds to the level that we would like. One of the goals for the Finance Committee will be to consider how best to do that. With the possibility of adding new property/properties in upcoming years, the long-term plans for maintaining buildings will become even more important.
9
Also notable in the Statement of Operations is a decrease in donations and grants revenue in 2017 to $193,778 from $250,024 in 2016. 2016 was a particularly strong year for donations, and for PAL to continue to grow and prosper we will need continued and expanded support from our donors and funding partners.
I would again like to thank the members of the Finance Committee for their support and assistance during the year. We have a small but dedicated group committed to supporting PAL.
Respectfully submitted,
Bill Cox, FCPA, FCA Treasurer

Joy Coghill C.M., PAL Vancouver’s Honorary President in Memoriam and co-founder with Jane Heyman, dedicated the last fifteen years of her life to building PAL’s vibrant, creative, and supportive community. She believed neighbours who shared a lifelong passion for the performing arts would be perfectly suited to support one another as they age. Her conviction has been affirmed since PAL’s doors opened. Residents support one another at the most financially, physically, and emotionally vulnerable time of their lives. In 2017 PAL Vancouver received 165 gifts in Joy Coghill’s memory resulting in a fund of $52,076 to ensure PAL will continue to fulfill her vision to improve the lives of low-income, disabled, and senior members of Canada’s performing arts community.
Joy frequently said, there is a family you are born into, and a family that you earn along the way. PAL Vancouver expresses its immense gratitude for the outpouring of support from Canadians who so generously supported Joy’s vision for PAL. Our family is a determined ensemble and we are very fortunate that the 165 founding donors to the Joy Coghill Legacy Fund are with us as we build our future together.

CANADA DAY IN COAL HARBOUR In 2017 PAL hosted Canada Day in Coal Harbour with generous sponsorship from the Coal Harbour Residents’ Association, a Vancouver Foundation Small Neighbourhood Grant, and in-kind donations from Ethical Bean; Safeway; Urban Fare; Lekker Foods; and Produce Terminal. At our free community pancake breakfast we rolled out the red carpet to over 500 neighbours who quickly lined up alongside rented BBQs, griddles, and coffee urns. Celebrants of every age enjoyed a great line-up of entertainment featuring The Ross Barrett Trio, Jonathan Chan, Don Stewart, Zoltan Buday, PALS Chorus led by Diane Lines, and Dixie Starr Children's Entertainment. Special appreciation goes to Ellie O’Day, Michael Dobbin, Chris Sjogren, Glenn MacDonald, PAL residents and Trustees, and CHRA members who volunteered as pancake flippers, coffee makers, dishwashers, and decorators. SPECIAL 2017 RESIDENT EVENTS
NEW PAL MUSIC VIDEO “THIS PLACE!”
PAL Residents and BC Hall of Fame recipients Judy Ginn Walchuk and Jim Walchuk wrote the song “This Place” in honour and in gratitude of Vancouver's first Performing Art's Lodge. The video was directed and produced by Judy Ginn Walchuk over almost five months and stars 60 residents who represent the wide variety of artists who make their homes at PAL Vancouver – our dancers, actors, musicians, visual creators, background performers, animators, hair dressers, make-up artists – on television, film, and stage; in nightclubs; at the opera and much more. Extra credit goes to Jim Walchuk for sound engineering and musical arrangement; Marlee Walchuk for videography; and Marlee and Judy for their massive job editing the footage to include dozens of vintage photographs of our residents. The new PAL video “This Place” can be viewed at palvancouver.org.

A PAL VANCOUVER LEGACY: JULIETTE CAVAZZI (1926 - 2017)
In her will, Juliette Cavazzi very generously bequeathed to PAL Vancouver the proceeds from the sale of all of her paintings by the Canadian artists Albert Franck and Florence Vale. In the 1950s and 60s, Franck and Vale developed their studio in Toronto as a gathering place for their peers including Joyce Wieland, Kazuo Nakamura, and Harold Town.
A trail-blazer in Canadian television, from 1956 to 1966 Juliette Cavazzi’s “The Juliette Show” graced homes across the country every Saturday after Hockey Night in Canada. Afterwards she hosted the CBC talk shows After Noon (1969-1971) and Juliette and Friends (1973-1975). In 1975 Juliette was named a member of the Order of Canada and in 1994 she was inducted into the BC Entertainment Hall of Fame. Juliette was inducted into Canada’s Walk of Fame in 1999.
Born Juliette Augustina Sysak in St. Vital, Manitoba to Polish-Ukrainian immigrant parents, Juliette’s family came to Vancouver when she was a girl. They encouraged her to pursue her dream of singing. By 13, she was performing at the Kitsilano Showboat. Ivan Ackery, manager of the Orpheum, caught her act, and on his recommendation Juliette was soon hired by Dal Richards to perform with his orchestra at The Panorama Roof Ballroom of the Hotel Vancouver. At 15, she made her national network debut on CBC Radio. The summer World War Two ended, Juliette was singing at the Happyland Ballroom on the grounds of the PNE when she met her future husband of 40 years, the musician Tony Cavazzi. They were married on July 7, 1948, and made the move to Toronto in 1954. Two years later, Juliette starred in her own variety show that aired every Saturday night.
If you are considering ways to leave a lasting legacy to PAL Vancouver, please contact Karen Woodman for more information: [email protected].

Since moving into a PAL partner suite almost ten years ago, Richard Cook’s passion has been our community’s rooftop garden, leading the committed team of resident volunteers who bring this spectacular urban oasis to life. It is a rare spring, summer, or fall day when Richard’s hands are not planting the trees, shrubs and flowers he has donated; building boxes for edibles like tomatoes, kale, carrots, and a wide variety of herbs; or sketching new plans for flower beds and gorgeous trellises.
In 1976, during the oppressive Apartheid regime in South Africa, Richard emigrated to Canada. Since then he has designed sets and costumes for over 150 drama productions as well as opera - working in Vancouver theatre, film and television. His TV Series credits include five continuous years as Art Director on “Highlander” (1992-96) and “Stargate” (2006) among others. A Jessie Richardson Award winner, Richard has worked with Gateway Theatre, Bastion Theatre, Studio 58, New Play Centre, Vancouver Playhouse, and numerous other companies. In recent years he has also art directed many TV commercials.
